*drop the ball

- 영한 : 책임을 못하다, 실수하다, (책임지고 있는 일을)실수로 망치다.

- 영영 : make a mistake and spoil something that you are responsible for

- 유사 : carry the ball (어떤일을 책임지고 있다)  /  on the ball (사정을 꿰고 있다/일이 어떻게 돌아가는지 훤히 알다)

※You are on the ball. (당신은 빈틈이 없군요.)

- 예문 : 

Don't drop the ball this time.
이번에는 실수하지 마라.

Just don't drop the ball with your son.
자식 문제로 실수를 하지 마라.

He didn't pay those bills. He dropped the ball.

Andy: The service here is really slipping.
앤디: 이곳 서비스가 정말 안좋아지는군.

Bill: I think the problem is in the kitchen.
빌: 문제는 주방에 있는 듯 한데.

Andy: Someone in the kitchen dropped the ball.
앤디: 주방 누군가가 실수한거야.

Bill: Here comes the waiter.
빌: 저기 웨이터가 오는군.

Waiter: Gentlemen the chef apologizes. Your dinners will be right out.
웨이터: 손님들 주방장이 사과했어요. 식사는 곧 나올 겁니다.


[기억할만한 표현]
▶ (food) on the side: 주요 코스 곁에 따라나오는 음식 따로 담겨져나오는 것
"I like my salad dressing on the side." 
(전 샐러드 드레싱을 곁에 따로 두고 먹습니다.)

▶ to be slipping: 떨어지다 안좋아지다
"My grandfather's memory is slipping. He forgets a lot of things lately." 
(우리 할아버지의 기억력이 점점 떨어져가요. 요즘 많은 걸 잊어버리셔요.)
