SEOUL, Jan. 11 (Yonhap) -- The ruling Democratic Party (DP) elected three-term lawmaker Han Byung-do as its new floor leader Sunday, days after his predecessor resigned amid mounting allegations of misconduct.
Han, who represents a district in the southwestern city of Iksan, won a runoff against Rep. Back Hye-ryun, after none of the four candidates running for floor leader secured a majority of the initial vote.

The first round had combined a vote among DP representatives and an online vote among general party members with voting rights, weighted 8:2.
​
The other two candidates in the first round were Reps. Jin Sung-joon and Park Jeung.

"I will speedily push state tasks and quickly improve people's livelihoods in order to securely support the success of the Lee Jae Myung
administration," the new floor leader said in his acceptance speech at a general DP lawmakers' meeting at the National Assembly.

"From this moment on, I will swiftly handle the chain of confusion and urgently set forth to end the insurrection, reform the prosecution and judiciary and improve people's livelihoods," he added, referring to the insurrection charge applied to former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his 2024 imposition of martial law.

His mention of "confusion" was a likely reference to the party's internal conflict over bribery allegations involving his predecessor, Rep. Kim Byung-kee, and former DP lawmaker Kang Sun-woo.
​
Han served as senior secretary for political affairs to former President Moon Jae-in and was considered a key member of the pro-Moon faction.
He later served as chief of strategy and planning for then DP leader Lee Jae Myung and then as operations room chief for Lee's presidential campaign last year.

The floor leader election was held after Kim resigned from the post last month following accusations that he received preferential treatment and abused his power, among other allegations.
​
Han will serve out the remainder of Kim's term until May.
​
Also on Sunday, the DP held a vote to elect three members of its supreme council to fill the vacancies left by those who resigned to run for regional elections in June.
​
Reps. Kang Deuk-gu, Lee Sung-yoon and Moon Jeong-bog were elected, ranking first to third, respectively.
​
Rep. Lee Geon-tae dropped out after ranking fourth.

(서울=연합뉴스) 김남권 오규진 기자 = 더불어민주당 한병도 신임 원내대표는 11일 "국정과제를 속도감 있게 추진하고 민생을 빠르게 개선해서 이재명 정부 성공을든든하게 뒷받침하겠다"고 밝혔다.

한 원내대표는 이날 국회에서 신임 원내대표 선출을 위해 열린 의원총회에서 당선 수락 연설에서 "우리의 목표는 하나, 이재명 대통령의 성공"이라며 이같이 강조했다.

그는 "지금 이 순간부터 일련의 혼란을 신속하게 수습하고, 내란 종식·검찰개혁·사법개혁·민생 개선에 시급히 나서겠다"고 말했다.

한 원내대표가 언급한 '혼란 수습'은 김병기·강선우 의원의 공천헌금 수수 의혹 여파에 따른 당 혼란을 염두에 둔 것으로 해석된다.

아울러 한 원내대표는 "지방선거라는 큰 시험대가 눈앞에 있다"며 "더 낮고 겸손한 자세를 견지하면서도 유능한 집권 여당의 모습을 국민께 보여드리고 당당하게 승리하겠다"고 언급했다.

이어 "야당과의 관계에서도 원칙을 분명히 지키겠다"며 "국정의 파트너로 인정하고 열린 자세로 대화와 타협에 나서겠다"고 덧붙였다.

한 원내대표는 다만 "내란 옹호, 민생을 발목 잡는 정쟁은 단호히 끊어내겠다"고 강조했다.
