In the Iraqi capital of Baghdad today, an unprecedented series of bombings left a trail of death and devastation. There were four attacks in all, killing thirty five people, injuring at least two hundred and thirty others, and unnerving an entire city of five million. The attacks were clearly coordinated. All of it suggesting a level of sophistication that US officials had doubted the Iraqi resistance possessed. ABC's David Wright reports tonight from Baghdad.
It was the bloodiest day in Baghdad since Saddam Hussein fell from power. A series of coordinated explosions rocked the four corners of the capital during rush hour. 8:30 a.m., a man dressed as an Iraqi cop drives a police car packed with explosives into the Al Baya police station in southwest Baghdad. 8:35, an ambulance laden with explosives slams into Red Cross Headquarters. 8:55, another bombing. This time, the target is a police station in the northern district of Al Sha'ab. 9:15, a car bomb blows up the Al Khadra police station just south of the city center. In forty-five minutes, Baghdad was in chaos.
Outside the Red Cross, a woman called out for her son, trapped inside. At the police stations, Iraqi officials sifted through the rubble looking for their colleagues. Crowds gathered in horror at the smoldering mess. This, on the first day of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month.
'Enemies of America did this,' said this injured Iraqi police officer, 'no Iraqi would do such a thing.'
Coalition forces continue to dismiss these bombings as the work of isolated terrorists or criminals. But the close timing of today's attacks suggests the resistance is not just well armed, but also well organized.
Iraqi police say there would have been a fifth car bombing today at yet another police station. But they managed to arrest the bomber. Tonight, aid organizations are reevaluating their presence in Iraq. The Red Cross had already scaled down after the UN bombing in August. Now, it may do so again. Today, with the exception of one US soldier, the victims were all Iraqis.
