Korean darling Park, who had missed a 49th-minute penalty, sank to his knees in prayer at the final whistle. He was joined on the turf at the Emmen stadium by a number of forlorn African figures, who could not quite believe they had given up a lead earned by David Abwo's 18th-minute strike. Nigeria, on one point, must now beat Switzerland to have a chance of qualification while, with three points, Korea take on Brazil in the final matches.
Nigeria got off to a flyer. Cha Ki Seok was called into action by Chinedu Ogbuke in the opening seconds, Solomon Okoronkwo drilling the rebound inches past the post. At the other end, Kim Seung Yong stole in from left and, with Ambruse Vanzekin racing out to punch, headed bravely but wide from 12 yards.
The Flying Eagles were on top though and David Abwo was causing havoc down the right. His devastating pace saw him clear of the Korean defence and, as Cha ran off the line, he rounded the keeper and coolly slotted home for Nigeria's first goal of the championship (1:0, '18)

Korea's star striker Park was having difficulty getting into the match. On 39 minutes he leapt well inside the six-yard box but the ball flew off top of his head and over. His forward partner Shin Young Rok came closer three minutes before half-time. The scorer of their goal against Switzerland swivelled inside the box and shot against the post. Captain Baek had an effort from outside the box tipped over as the Taeguk Warriors grew in confidence.
The Asians had a great chance to equalise just after the restart. Marauding forward left back Ahn Tae-eun was brought down in the area. But, of all people, Park could not convert the penalty as the inspired Vanzekin saved well diving to his left.
The other much talked about player of recent weeks, John Obi Mikel, was having another assured match in the middle of the park. He should have made more headlines but volleyed high over from 12 yards.
The Africans continued to press but were nearly caught out just after the hour. Kim Seung-Yong did brilliantly to square the ball back invitingly for Shin but the Suwon Bluewings striker tripped over the ball 12 yards out. Kim almost grabbed a draw with 10 minutes left but, again, Vanzekin was equal to it, fingertipping his bouncing angled shot wide.
Then came redemption. Looking to the heavens first, Park stepped up to a 25-yard free kick and bent it spinning into the top corner (1:1, 89).
"Although he missed the penalty I could see he was calm," said coach park Sung-wha. "I knew there would be another chance."
A deserved draw? No, there was more drama to come. Park's 20-yard drive was palmed by Vanzekin into the path of Baek who fired home from a tight angle to spark jubilant scenes among the hoards of Red Devil fans (1-2, 90+2).
"We lost concentration in the last five minutes," offered Nigerian coach Samson Siasia. "I told my boys not to commit fouls around the edge of the box, but we are not going to cry about it. We just have to win our next game."
"I'm very satisfied. It was a dramatic win. My boys gave their all and that's why we won," added an emotional Korean coach.
