Incredible India! 인도의 외국인 관광객 유치를 위한 마케팅 슬로건이고 약간은 상투적이긴 하지만, 이 멋진 나라에 대해 그보다 딱 맞는 단어 없을 듯하다. 인도의 면적은 300만k㎡이며, 12억1000만명의 인구를 가진 나라로 중국을 바짝 뒤쫓고 있다. * It may seem a bit of clich? and I know it's the country's marketing slogan, but never a truer word could be said about this fabulous country. It covers over 3,000,000k㎡(1,000,000sq miles), and a population now of over 1.2billion(China watch out). * 인도를 관광할 수 있는 좋은 수단은 열차이다. 영국에 기반한 S. D. 기업들이 인도의 레일 패스(열차표)를 판매한다. 열차표는 이메일을 통해 구입이 가능하며, 미국 달러로 결제한다. 장거리표(무제한 여행)일수록, 가격은 더 저렴하다. 평균 여행자에게 안성맞춤인 2등석과 4인실 침대 열차의 가격은 1인당 1개월에 248달러, 2개월에 400달러, 3개월에 530달러이다. * A great option to see India is by train. SD Enterprises sell India Rail Passes and are based in th UK(<A href="http://www.indiarail.co.uk/" target=_self>www.indiarail.co.uk</A>). They will communicate with you by email, and their prices are in US dollars. The longer the pass(unlimited travel), the cheaper it is. For a 2nd Class, 4-berth AC(perfect for the average traveler) prices are -1 month -$248, 2 months-$400 and 3 months-$530 per person.   * 그렇다면 그냥 “자연스러운 흐름에 따르지” 않고, 굳이 꼭 열차표를 사는 데 신경을 써야 하는가? 만약, 당신이 시간에 제약을 받지 않거나 3등석 열차를 이용하는데 불편함을 느끼지 않는다면(너무 빽빽해서 자잘 틈도 없고 땀에 전 겨드랑이 사이로 당신 얼굴이 이따금씩 동물과 발들에 묻히는 것을 상상해보라), 신경 쓸 필요가 없다. 그러나 논리적으로 생각해보라. 12억 1000만명의 인구가 살고 있는, 특히 야간 열차는 항상 붐비는 곳이 인도이다. * So why bother buying a Rail Pass and not just "go with the flow?" Well if you have unlimited time, or you have no problem sharing 3rd class (think cans of sardines, no sleeping area, lots of sweaty armpits, feet stuck in your face and the occasional animal) then you don't need to bother. But think logically; 1.2billion people live here and trains get full all the time, especially overnight journeys. * 이제 인상적인 것들을 나열해보자면, 인도의 수도인 뉴델리는 굉장히 지저분한데, 특히나 소들의 자유로움으로 인해 여행자들은 뉴델리가 더욱 지저분하다고 느낀다. 붉은 성인 레드포트Red Fort는 매우 멋지고, 여성들이 걸치는 옷의 색깔은 걸어 다니는 무지개를 보는 듯하다. * Here are some highlights: New Delhi is pretty dirty, and it is often tourists' first introduction to cows having the freedom of the city. The Red Fort is pretty cool though, and the colors the women wear is like watching walking rainbows.   * 펀자브(인도 북서부에 있는 주州)에 위치한 도시인 암리차르에는 황금 사원이 있는데 이 곳은 꼭 한 번 가볼만하다. 여기에는 시크교도에게 가장 영적인 장소인 400년된 사원이 있다. 이 곳의 외벽은 100킬로그램의 금으로 만들어졌다. 이 외에도 당신이 놓치지 말아야 할 곳은 인도와 파키스탄의 국경인 와가 보더Waga border로, 매일 오후 4시 30분에 문이 닫힌다. 경비요원들은 몬티 파이튼(영국의 유명한 희극 그룹)처럼 허세를 부리며 걷고 사람들은 마치 축구 경기장에 있는 듯 환호한다. 국경 문을 향해 인도 국기를 흔들며 달려갈 사람들은 모여있는 군중들 중에서 선발된다. 파키스탄쪽 군중들이 인도 군중에 비해 200대 1 정도로 수적으로 훨씬 적다는 게 보이겠지만, 그쪽 역시 아주 멋진 분위기이고 사람들 역시 매우 친절했다. * Amritsar in Punjab has the Golden Temple and is definitely worth a visit, it's the holiest of places for Sikhs and is over 400 years old, the 100kilograms of gold used when building it are located on the outside. A must-see though is the closing of the India/Pakistan border, which happens daily at around 4:30 p.m. Gates are closed from both sides of the bother. Both sets of guards have this bravado of walking like so mething out of Monty Python, whilst at the same time the crowd cheer like they're at a football (soccer) game. People were plucked from the crowd to run up to the border gate waving the Indian flag. You will likely find the Pakistani crowd is outnumbered 200-1 by the Indian crowd, but it's and excellent atmosphere and people were very friendly. * 다음으로 둘러볼 곳은 라자스탄 주Rajasthan에 있는 자이푸르Jaipur이다. 색의 축제인 홀리Holi가 열리는 시기에 맞춰 갈 수 있다면, 더 많은 재미를 볼 것이다. 홀리 축제는 3월 중에 열리므로, 열리는 일자리를 미리 확인하는 것이 좋다. <A href="http://festivals.igiftstoindia.com/holi/when-is-holi.html" target=_self>http://festivals.igiftstoindia.com/holi/when-is-holi.html</A>. * Next up is Jaipur in Rajasthan. If you can time it for Holi, the color festival, it's a lot fun but that can be anytime in March so it's worth checking first <A href="http://festivals.igiftstoindia.com/holi/when-is-holi.html" target=_self>http://festivals.igiftstoindia.com/holi/when-is-holi.html.</A> * 홀리가 열리는 날에는 사람들이 서로에게 물감 분말을 던지고, 각 지방에서는 관광객들에게 무료로 분말가루를 나눠주거나, 밴드를 부르고, 지붕없는 버스를 운행하는 등 특별행사를 마련하기도 한다. 자이푸르에서 멀지 않은 곳이 바로 타지마할Taj Mahal이 있는 아그라Agra이다. 타지마할을 담은 사진들은 진짜 모습을 제대로 보여주지 못한다. 실제 타지마할을 보게 되면, 숨이 멎을 것만 같은 아름다운 모습을 만날 수 있다. 특히 일출이나 석양 무렵의 모습이 장관이다. * On that day everyone throws colored powder at each other, and the local authorities sometimes lay on a special free festival for tourists, which includes free powder, a band and then an open top bus tour around the city. Not far away is Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. Photos of the Taj Mahal don't do it justice; it's even more breathtaking in real life, especially at sunset and sunrise.   * 마하라쉬트라주Mharashtra 아우랑가바드Aurangabad에는 불교, 힌두교, 자이나교의 34개 석굴들이 함께 있는 엘로라 석굴Ellora Caves이 있다. 엘로라 석굴에 있는 몇 석굴은 서기 630년 전에 만들어지기도 했다. 뭄바이는 발리 우드(인도 봄베이와 할리우드 합성어)의 고향이다. 운이 좋으면, 길을 가다가 갑자기 영화의 엑스트라 출연을 제안받을 수도 있다. 그럴 땐, 꼭 해라! 어쩌면 출연료를 받을지도 모른다.(킹피셔 맥주 6병 정도는 충분히 살 수 있는 정도의 액수). 다음 목적지는 엄청난 사원들과 우주 저편에서 떨어진 것만 같은 바위들이 있는 카르나타카주Karnataka에 있는 함피Hampi이다.  * Aurangabad in Maharashtra has the Ellora Caves, which consist of 34 caves from Buddhist, Hindu and Jain religions, some dating back to 630AD. Mumbai of course is home to Bollywood. If you're lucky you may randomly get asked to be an extra in a film. Do it! You may even get paid(about enough for six big bottles of Kingfisher beer). Next up is Hampi in Karnataka, which has these amazing temples and rocks that look like they've been dropped there from outer space. * 고아Goa 지역에는 들려볼만한 곳이 많고, 바다가 따뜻하기 때문에 해안가에서 그저 쉬는 것도 좋을 것이다. 스쿠터를 빌려 이곳저곳 다녀보 것도 좋을 것이다. 한국에서 운전하는 것보다 더 힘들진 않을 것이다. 예를 들면 코치섬(코친이라고도 불린다)의 중국식 어망과 전통무용극 카타칼리Katakali같은 것이다. 또는 알레피Alleppey에서 보트를 빌려 3일 동안 진행되는 멋진 수로 유람backwaters, backwater cruise을 할 수도 있다. 수로 유람을 하게 되면, 당신만을 위한 선장과 도우미, 요리사가 함께 하기 때문에, 즉석 요리를 먹을 수도 있고 침실 몇 채도 함께 딸려있다. * There are many places in Goa worth visiting and it's good to just relax on the beach as the ocean is warm. It's also a good idea to hire a scooter and tour by yourself. No worse than driving in Korea.   In Kerala there is an abundance of interests, for example Kochi Island to see the Chinese fishing nets and the traditional Kathakali dancing. You can also hire a boat from Alleppey to tour the backwaters for three days, which is brilliant. You get your own crew of captain, helper and cook, so all your meals are cooked and so me of the bedrooms are ensuite. * 칸하국립공원Kanha National Park의 사파리투어는 운이 좋으면 코끼리 등 위에 앉아 호랑이를 볼 수도 있는 필수 방문코스이다. 파티의 도시인 시끌벅적한 방갈로르Bangalore도 방문하라. 8시간에 걸쳐 우띠Ooty까지 가는 토이트레인을 탈 수도 있다. 장거리여행이지만, 매우 아름다운 장관이 펼쳐지기에 장거리 여행을 감수할만하다. * Going on safari in Kanha National Park is a must, to hopefully see the tigers, whilst sitting on top of an elephant. Also visit buzzing Bangalore, a real party city. You can take the eight hour toy train up to Ooty which is a long one, but worth it; very beautiful scenery.    * 인도여행의 하이라이트 중 하나를 꼽자면, 달라이 라마와 많은 수의 티벳 망명자들이 거주하고 있는 맥그로드 간즈(McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala 다람살라)를 방문하는 것이다. 그 곳에는 믿을 수 없을 만큼의 고요함과 평화 그리고 아름다움(희말라야 바로 옆에 위치해 있기에)이 한데 어우러져 있다. 달라이 라마는 때로 대중 법회를 하는데, 이는 오직 다람살라 지역 내에만 알려질 뿐이다. 당신이 특별히 종교적이지 않다 하더라도, 비좁은 곳에서 달라이 라마를 얼핏 보기 위해서만 이라도 법회는 충분히 가볼만한 가치가 있다. 마지막으로, 그렇지만 앞서 방문한 다른 곳들에 뒤지지 않는 곳이 바로 다즐링Darjelling인데, 여기서는 서늘하고 좋은 기운으로 가득하다. 이 곳에서 네팔을 갈 수도 있다.<글 Steve McNally> * One highlight of India could be a visit to McLeod Ganj(Dharamsala) which is the residence of the Dalai Lama and many escaped Tibetans. It has this unbelievable calmness, peace and beauty(your're next to the Himalayas) all rolled into one. The Dalai Lama occasionally does public preaching, but it's only advertised locally. Even if you're not religious, it's worth going, to even catch a glimpse of him at close quarters. Last but not least is a visit to Darjeeling, a lot cooler and a nice vibe about the place.
