I think it was a glimpse from the past. Mujin was the one who lured the royal guardsmen showing an empty box in the snow fighting scene. He actually had hidden the spell book there and he had to kill aengcho because he can't see her getting dismembered. He chose this land where aengcho used to live as a price of killing her from the king. He built shrine and made a will it protect the shine so that he could meet her in next life. But in the present days the spellbook didn’t work maybe because honjoo was not a shaman or not chosen by the spirit
