㉡ 전통문법에서는 콤마를 쓰지만, 요즈음엔 comma[,]를 찍지않은 경항이 많다. 특히 미국에서는

ⓐ I went to the Central Park,too.too 앞에 콤마 있음ⓑ I went to the Central Park too. too 앞에 콤마 없음

ⓒ They felt sorry for me, and they felt sorry for him too. too 앞에 콤마 있어도 좋고 없어도 좋음.

㉰ That was part of the punishment, too. too는 구어체에서는 문장 전체를 수식하지만 특히 문장의 중심인 주어와 관련이 많아 문어체에서는주어를 강조하기 위해 주어 바로 뒤에 두는 경향이 많다.

문장의 주어는 Things이지만 실질적인[의미상] 주어는 you이므로 you 뒤에 too를 붙임.

󰂝 [한컴]※ 늘 부사로 쓰이며 말뜻을 대별하면 A ‘그 위에’, ‘…도 (또한)’(in addition, also); B ‘너무나’(excessively)로 된다. 이 중 구문상으로 특히 문제가 되는 것은 A의 ‘…도 (또한)’과 B의 3, 4에서 기술한 too ... to (do) ‘너무 …해서 ―못하다’이다. 후자의 주요 용법은 다시 둘로 크게 나뉜다. 즉, a baby too young to walk와 같이 too ...로 서술 또는 꾸며진 주체가 to (do)에 대해서 의미상의 주어의 관계에 있는《ɑ bɑby walks》 것과, a book too difficult (for me) to read와 같이 목적어의 관계에 있는《I read 〔one reads〕 ɑ book》 것이 그것이다.

※⟪NOTE⟫ ⑴ 구어에서는 강세의 위치에 따라서 의미가 달라짐: Bén teaches skating ~.는 ‘벤도 스케이트를 가르친다’(=Ben ~ teaches skating.)란 뜻이고, skáting일 때는 ‘스케이트도’, téaches는 ‘가르치는 일도 하다’의 뜻이 됨.

※⑵ 긍정문에서는 too를, 부정문에서는 either를 쓰는데, 부정문보다 앞에 오거나 권유를 나타내는 의문문에서는 예외임: I, ~, didn’t read the book. 나도 그 책을 읽지 않았다(=I didn’t read the book, either.)/Won’t you come, ~? 자네도 오지 않겠나.

※⟪SYN⟫ too 문미(文尾)나 관계되는 말 뒤에 쓰임. also too보다 형식적인 말. 문장 끝에 쓰는 일은 드묾. either 부정문의 문장 끝에 쓰임. as well as well as 이하의 종속절이 생략된 것으로 문장 끝에 쓰임.

※⟪NOTE⟫ 맨 끝 예문에서와 같은 too+형용사+명사는

※⑴ 흔히 「too+형용사+a+󰆴 명사」의 어순을 취하지만 ... a ~ hot day로 하는 때도 있음.

※⑵ 복수 또는 󰇆 명사를 수식하는 형용사 앞에서는 too를 쓸 수 없음: ̽too hot days/̽too hot weather. 단, much, little 따위의 양수사(量數詞)와는 함께 써도 무방함: ~ much time/~ little money

전통문법에서 또한의 뜻으로 쓰일 경우 : 필자의 뜻에 따라 위치가 달라진다.

㉮ 보통 문미에 두며 문장 전체를 수식한다. 그리고 too 앞에는 콤마를 찍는다. you will all perish, too.

㉯ 문장 중간에 올 때는 too 앞뒤로 컴마를 찍는다. you, too, will all perish.

제가요 지금 한국에 중학교 하다 미국으로 왔어요. 그리고 미국에 있다보니 미국 책을 많이 접하게 되었는데요, 의문점이 하나 생겼습니다.,too. 가 맞는 건지? too. 가 맞는 건지? 예를 들어 ㉠ I went to the Central Park, too. ㉡ I went to the Central Park too. ㉠은 제가 이때까지 한국에 살아오면서 한국 학원 및 학교에서 배운 것입니다. ㉡은 제가 미국에서 본 책이랑 교과서 입니다. 제가 미국에서 ㉠의 경우를 본적이 있는지는 잘 모르겠습니다. 한국과 미국에 차이가 있는 건가요? 그럴 것 같지는 않네요.. 저는 한국에서 미국인이 쓰는 영어를 배웠지, 한국인을 위해 편하게 바꾼 영어를 배우고 있다는 사실은 부정하고 싶네요
