They prayed for the souls of U.N. soldiers, who sacrificed their lives to defend South Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War, and were buried in the cemetery. In the service timed for the country's Memorial Day, the participants also wished for the success of PyeongChang's bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. "Korea is the only separated country in the world, still holding its pain. PyeongChang's hosting of the Winter Olympics will not only ease the tension surrounding the Korean Peninsula but help enhance world peace that is a part of the Olympic movement," said Ahn Jung-tae, head of an association of Busan residents hailing from Gangwon Province where PyeongChang is located.
Ahn and other participants pledged to do their best to help PyeongChang's campaign in the days leading up to the IOC vote. Those attending Wednesday's event included La Gi-hong, president of the Busan branch of the Korean War Veterans Association; Choi In-chun, president of the Korea Unification Research Center; Ha Gyeong-yong, head of the Busan branch of the Vietnam War Veterans Association; Kim Eung-su who heads a branch of the National Unification Association; and Ahn Ye-chang, adviser of the Green Association.
