When mighty King Darius urled the ancient world,

강대한 다리우스 왕이 고대 세계를 지배할 때 

His palace in the sands shone like a pearl. 

그의 궁전은 모래 위의 진주처럼 빛났다. 

His city called Babylon had gardens in the Halls. 

바벨론이라 불리는 그의 도시는 홀 안에 정원을 가지고 있었다.

Gold-painted lions gleamed on the walls. 

금으로 칠해진 사자들이 벽 위에서 반짝였다. 

Now Daniel the prophet was the king's wisest man,

 왕의 가장 현명한 사람은 다니엘이라는 예언자였다. 

So Darius put Daniel in charge of his lands. 

그래서 다리우스는 다니엘에게 그의 땅을 맡겼다.

But certain Persian princes wanted Daniel's place. 

하지만 페르시아 왕자들은 다니엘의 자리를 원했다. 

They decided to bring Daniel down in disgrace. 

그들은 다니엘을 불명예스럽게 끌어내리기로 결심했다. 

So spies watched Daniel all day long, 

그래서 스파이를 붙여 하루 종일 다니엘을 감시했습니다.

Hoping to catch Daniel doing something wrong.

다니엘이 무언가 잘못하는 것을 잡기를 바라면서

But Daniel was honest right down to the penny,

하지만 다니엘을 정직했습니다. 

And as for faults, he just hadn't many. 

그리고 그는 잘못을 하지 않았습니다.

Then one of the spies said, "He has odd ways.

그런데 한 스파이가 말했습니다. 그가 이상하다고.

Three times a day Daniel stops and prays. 

그는 하루 세 번씩 멈춰서 기도를 합니다.

He goes to his room and gets down on his knees 

그는 방으로 들어가서 무릎을 꿀고 

And prays to a God that no one sees." 

아무도 보지 못한 신에게 기도합니다. 

The princes went to Darius that very day, 

왕자들은 바로 그 날 다리우스에게 가서 

And this is what they asked him to say:

다음과 같이 요청했습니다. 

"Make this a law that all must obey:

모든 사람이 반드시 따라야 할 법을 만드세요.  

To foreign gods it's forbidden to pray. 

외국 신에게 기도하는 것은 금지해야 합니다다. 

All praise should be given to Darius the king;

모든 찬양은 다리우스 왕에게 드려야 합니다. 

It's forbidden to bow before any other thing." 

다른 어떤 것 앞에서도 절하는 것은 금지합니다. 

The proud king let the princes have their way

교만한 왕은 왕자들의 뜻대로 하도록 허락하고 

And signed their request into law that day.

그날 그들의 요청으로 만든 법에 서명을 했습니다. 

The ink on the tablet had just begun to dry,

그 태블릿의 잉크가 마르기 시작하자마자 

When his enemies laughed because Daniel would die. 

그의 적들은 다니엘이 죽을 것이라고 비웃었습니다.
