ABL All-Star Sunday: Crawley dunks; West wins

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Jan 19, 1998 - 01:37 EST) -- Sylvia Crawley stole the show from the ABL All-Stars Sunday night.

Responding to chants of "Crawley, Crawley" and her personal challenge to do something daring, the 6-5 forward from the Colorado Xplosion slipped on a blindfold and captured the league's first slam dunk contest.

Crawley marched off 10 paces before being fitted for the blindfold. She was mobbed by players and other supporters after she rose above the rim and easily slammed the ball through the basket.

The main attraction was supposed to be the league's second All-Star game, won by the West 102-73 as MVP Shalonda Enis scored 15 points on five-for-seven shooting and Natalie Williams added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

But Crawley turned it into her personal show with two creative and perfectly-executed dunks for a score of 97.5 out of 100. New England's Kari Wolters was second with 76 points, while Seattle's Linda Godby finished third with 70.

Each of the finalists made two dunks in Saturday's preliminaries, when the five participants were successful on just over half the attempts (8 of 15).

Crawley, who earned $5,000, has been dunking since she was a freshman at North Carolina, where she said she failed on her first 10 attempts before finally slamming on a regulation height (10 feet) rim.

She began practicing the blindfold dunk about two weeks ago and perfected it in the days leading up to the competition.

"I was a little nervous because I had been missing it a lot," she said. "But once I got here, I got it down and didn't miss any."

Wolters, the tallest player in the ABL at 6-7, and Godby each made a pair of dunks in the finals. But each needed two attempts in each round, while Crawley succeeded on her first try in performing a spread-eagle slam for a score of 47.5 as well as the blindfold effort that drew a perfect 50.

All three of the finalists appeared to get higher off the floor than they did in the preliminaries. They were more creative, too, with Wolters executing her second dunk after starting with her back to the basket and bouncing the between her legs before spinning to dribble to the rim from the foul line.

"I think adrenalin had a lot to do with it," Crawley said. "You get out there and everything's bubbling. There's the crowd, and you're on national TV. You say, 'I've got to do this."'

Philadelphia's Dawn Staley, a starter for the East, won the three-point shootout, making 15 of 25 attempts to beat Katie Smith of Columbus and earn $5,000 that she considered gravy.

"I'm not in it for the money," she said. "I want the bragging rights."

The West built an early double-digit lead and was never seriously threatened after the first quarter. The East missed 21 of 28 shots and trailed 54-27 at the half.

Crystal Robinson scored 14 points, Yolanda Griffith had 13 and Jennifer Azzi 12 for the West. League scoring leader Teresa Edwards led the East with 20 points, while Adrienne Goodson had 13 and Carolyn Jones 11.

In the 3-point shooting contest, Dawn Staley of Philadelphia defeated Katie Smith of Columbus, Ohio, for the title.

In the All-Star game, the West beat the East 102-73.
