(서울=연합뉴스) 이슬기 안정훈 기자 = 6·3 지방선거 전 더불어민주당과 조국혁신당의 범여권 통합 추진 논의에 일단 제동이 걸린 모습이다.

민주당은 10일 오전 국회에서 의원총회를 열고 정청래 대표가 지난달 22일 혁신당에 제안한 '지방선거 전 합당 추진'이 사실상 어려워진 상황에 대해 공감대를 형성했다고 박수현 수석대변인은 브리핑을 통해 전했다.

박 수석대변인은 이날 의총 후 브리핑에서 "의원들은 대체로 통합의 필요성에 대해서는 공감했으나, 현 상황에서의 합당 추진은 명분은 있더라도 추진이 어렵다고 의견을 모았다"고 설명했다.

박 수석대변인은 "혁신당과의 합당 제안이 '지방선거 압승을 통한 국정 성공'이라는 진정성에서 비롯됐다 해도, 추진 과정에서의 갈등으로 귀결되고 있다는 상황 인식을 공유했다"고 말했다.

민주당은 이날 오후 최고위원회의를 열고 의총에서 공유된 의원들의 의견을 고려해 혁신당과의 합당 추진에 대한 최종적인 결론을 내릴 방침이다.

SEOUL, Feb. 10 (Yonhap) -- Lawmakers of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) reached a consensus that pushing for a merger with the minor liberal Rebuilding Korea Party would be difficult ahead of local elections in early June, officials said Tuesday.

The consensus is seen as putting the brakes on a push by DP leader Jung Chung-rae, who raised the proposal last month that the ruling party would merge with the Rebuilding Korea Party before the local elections.

DP spokesperson Park Soo-hyun told reporters that most lawmakers agreed on the need to merge with the minor party to better help secure a landslide victory in the June 3 elections, but there were different views on how and when the two political parties would merge.

"While the lawmakers generally shared the view that unity is necessary, there was a consensus that pushing for the merger, even if it had rationale, was difficult under the current circumstances," the spokesperson said, after the party's lawmakers concluded a meeting on the party leader's proposal.

The lawmakers also agreed that the proposal intensified tensions within the ruling party although it came out of a "genuine intention to secure the party's landslide victory in the local elections and the success of the administration," according to Park.
​
Many lawmakers suggested continuing the discussions after the elections, he added.
​
The DP plans to reach a final decision on the proposal at a meeting of its supreme council later in the day.
​
Former Justice Minister Cho Kuk, who leads the minor party, earlier asked the DP to make its final decision by Friday.
