3. 묵상칼럼 : 기도하는 사람의 마지막 내려놓음

“여호와께서 내 간구를 들으셨음이여 여호와께서 내 기도를 받으시리로다.”
— 시편 6편 9절

   다윗은 깊은 고통 가운데 하나님께 부르짖었습니다. 그의 눈에는 근심이 가득했고, 밤마다 눈물로 침상을 적실 만큼 힘겨운 시간을 지나고 있었습니다. 그런데 놀라운 것은 상황이 모두 해결된 뒤에 이 고백을 한 것이 아니라는 사실입니다. 다윗은 여전히 현실 가운데 있었지만, 하나님께서 자신의 간구를 들으셨다는 사실을 믿었습니다.

   기도의 가장 놀라운 능력은 내가 원하는 것을 얻는 데 있지 않습니다. 기도는 하나님 앞에서 내가 붙들고 있던 것들을 내려놓고, 마침내 나 자신까지 하나님께 맡기는 자리입니다.

   오스왈드 챔버스는 하나님 앞에서 우리의 소유라고 생각하는 모든 것을 내려놓고, 아무것도 없는 사람처럼 하나님 앞에 서서 자신을 하나님께 드리라고 권면합니다. 이것은 단순히 물질을 포기하라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 내 계획, 내 권리, 내 자존심, 내 미래, 그리고 내가 원하는 방식으로 하나님께서 일하시기를 바라는 마음까지 내려놓는 것입니다. 챔버스는 이러한 온전한 내려놓음이 감정의 문제가 아니라 하나님께 자신의 의지를 맡기는 결단이라고 강조합니다.

   이 말씀을 가장 선명하게 보여주는 사람이 누가복음 18장의 부자 관원입니다. 그는 율법을 지켰고 도덕적으로도 흠이 없어 보였습니다. 그러나 예수님께서 그의 마음 깊은 곳을 드러내셨을 때, 그에게는 하나님보다 더 소중하게 붙들고 있는 것이 있었습니다. 그는 많은 재물을 가지고 있었고, 결국 그 소유를 내려놓으라는 말씀 앞에서 근심하며 돌아갔습니다.

우리에게도 이런 질문이 필요합니다.

“나는 하나님께 무엇을 맡기지 못하고 있는가?”

내가 붙들고 있는 것이 물질일 수도 있습니다.
사람일 수도 있습니다.
명예와 체면일 수도 있습니다.
사역의 열매일 수도 있습니다.
내가 원하는 미래일 수도 있습니다.
심지어 하나님께서 주신 것조차 하나님보다 더 붙들고 있을 수 있습니다.

기도는 하나님께 무언가를 얻어내기 위한 수단이 아니라, 하나님 앞에서 나의 손을 펴는 시간입니다.

손을 펴야 하나님께서 주시는 것을 받을 수 있습니다.
내 것을 움켜쥔 손으로는 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 붙들 수 없습니다.

   다윗은 모든 것이 해결된 사람이어서 “여호와께서 내 기도를 받으시리로다”라고 고백한 것이 아닙니다. 그는 자신의 무력함을 인정하고 하나님께 자신을 맡겼기 때문에 그렇게 고백할 수 있었습니다. 하나님께서 내 기도를 들으신다는 믿음은 결국 “하나님, 이제 제 뜻보다 주님의 뜻을 신뢰하겠습니다”​라는 고백으로 나아갑니다.

오늘 하나님 앞에 조용히 서 보십시오.

내가 가진 것을 하나씩 내려놓아 보십시오.
내가 붙들고 있는 사람을 내려놓으십시오.
내가 원하는 결과를 내려놓으십시오.
내가 세워 놓은 계획을 내려놓으십시오.
그리고 마지막으로 나 자신을 하나님께 드리십시오.

그때 우리는 비로소 아무것도 가진 것이 없는 사람이 아니라, 하나님 한 분을 가진 사람이 됩니다.

기도의 끝은 내가 원하는 것을 얻는 것이 아니라 하나님을 얻는 것입니다.

그러므로 오늘 이렇게 기도해 봅시다.

“주님, 제가 붙들고 있는 것을 내려놓게 하소서.
제가 원하는 것을 이루어 달라고만 기도하지 말게 하시고,
제 뜻을 내려놓고 주님의 뜻을 받아들이게 하소서.
아무것도 없는 것처럼 주님 앞에 서게 하시고,
저의 삶 전체를 주님께 드리게 하소서.
그리고 다윗처럼 고백하게 하소서.
‘여호와께서 내 간구를 들으셨음이여 여호와께서 내 기도를 받으시리로다.’
아멘.”

4. 묵상컬럼(영문버전) : The Final Surrender of a Person Who Prays

“The LORD has heard my cry for mercy; the LORD accepts my prayer.”
— Psalm 6:9

   David cried out to God in the midst of deep suffering. His eyes were worn out with grief, and he had spent his nights weeping. Yet he came to a remarkable confession: “The LORD has heard my cry.” His circumstances had not necessarily changed at that moment, but his confidence in God had changed. He trusted that God had heard his prayer.

   The greatest power of prayer is not simply receiving what we ask for. Prayer is the place where we open our clenched hands before God, surrender what we have been holding onto, and finally entrust even ourselves to Him.

   Oswald Chambers reminds us that we must lay down before God everything we consider our own and stand before Him as people who possess nothing apart from Him. This does not merely mean giving up material possessions. It means surrendering our plans, our rights, our pride, our future, and even our desire for God to work according to our preferred way. Chambers emphasizes that true surrender is ultimately a matter of the will—a deliberate decision to entrust ourselves to Jesus Christ.

   We see this truth clearly in the rich ruler in Luke 18. He had lived an outwardly respectable and religious life. Yet when Jesus exposed what was truly occupying his heart, it became clear that he was holding something more tightly than he was holding onto God. He had great wealth, and when Jesus called him to surrender it and follow Him, he became deeply sorrowful.

That raises an important question for each of us:

“What am I unwilling to surrender to God?”

It may be money.
It may be a person.
It may be our reputation or position.
It may even be the success of our ministry.
It may be the future we have carefully planned.
Sometimes, even something God Himself has given us can become something we hold more tightly than we hold onto God.

Prayer is not a way of persuading God to give us everything we want. Prayer is the time when we open our hands before Him.

We must open our hands in order to receive what God wants to give us. A clenched hand cannot fully receive God's will.

David did not say, “The LORD has heard my prayer” because everything had already been resolved. He could say it because he had acknowledged his helplessness and entrusted himself to God.

Faith that God hears our prayers ultimately leads us to say:

“Lord, I trust Your will more than my own.”

So today, stand quietly before God.

Lay down what you have been holding onto.
Lay down the people you are trying to control.
Lay down the outcome you desperately want.
Lay down the plans you have made for your future.
And finally, give yourself completely to God.

Then you will discover that having nothing of your own does not mean being empty. It means having God Himself.

The goal of prayer is not ultimately to get what we want.

The deepest end of prayer is to gain God Himself.

So let us pray:

“Lord, help me surrender everything I have been holding onto.
Keep me from praying only for You to fulfill my desires.
Teach me to surrender my will and receive Yours.
Help me stand before You as one who possesses nothing apart from You,
and give my entire life into Your hands.
And like David, let me confess:
‘The LORD has heard my cry; the LORD accepts my prayer.’
Amen.”
