1. 동격을 연결: and, or, but
1) 앞의 것을 기준하여

3) 콤마는 단어, 구, 절을 연결한다.
and, or, but, nor, for, so(등위 접속사)

4) 세미콜론은 절만 연결한다.

2. 접속사 구문
1) 명령문 + and
~하라, 그러면 ~할 것이다(=If you~)
Follow my advice, and you will succeed.
= If you follow my advice, you will succeed.
* and는 두 동사 사이에서 부정사 to대신으로도 쓰인다.
Come and see me tomorrow.
= Come to see me tomorrow.
Try and do it well.
= Try to do it well.
명령문+or: ~하라, 그렇지 않으면(= Unless you~)
Make haste, or you will be late.
= Unless you make haste, you will be late.
2) nor+조동사+S+V
= and ~not~ , either
그리고 (역시)~않다
I am not rich, and I do not wish to be.
= I am not rich, nor do I wish to be.
나는 부자가 아니다. 그리고 부자도 되고 싶지 않다.
* Neither she nor I am rich,
그녀도 나도 부자가 아니다.
* 형용사+ and+형용사: 앞의 형용사는 부사적으로 수식하며 very의 뜻
앞에 nice, fine,good, rare 등

4. 등위접속사의 여러가지 의미
1) and: 더구나
He soeaks English well, and that very well.
2) but: 그러나(접속사)/
They are all gone but I don't go.
~이외에는(전치사), 제외한/
They are all gone but me.
단지(= only 부사), 불과한
She is but a child.
3) or: 즉(that is)/ 다시 말하면
She weighs 130 pounds or about 60 kilograms.
4) for: ~인 까닭은/ ~이기 때문에
뒤에 생각난 이유나 설명을첨가할 때 문두에 오지 않고 중간에 온다.
because는 처음부터 생각난 원인/ 앞에 말한 것과 인과관계
She must be ill, for she looks pale. (부가적 이유)
그녀는 병이 났음에 틀림없다.왜냐하면 창백해 보이니까.
She looks pale, because she is ill. (주절에 대한 원인을 표시)
그녀는 아프기 때문에 창백해 보인다.
It must have rained much of late, for the river is high.
최근에 비가 많이 왔음에 틀림없다. 왜냐하면 강물이 불었으니까. (이유)
The river has risen, because it has rained much of late.
요즘 비바 많이 왔기 때문에 강물이 불었다. (원인)
5) yet: ~이기는 하지만/ 아직
Though the water is deep, yet it is clear.
물이 깊기는 하지만 맑다.
You're not a bit like us, and yet you're our cousin.
당신은 우리와 조금도 닮지 않았지만 우리의 사촌이다.

6) while: 한편, 반면에, 그런데
This is mine, while that is his.
이것은 나의 것이고 한편으로 저것은 그의 것이다.
5. 조건의 부사절을 이끄는 접속사
1) once~ 일단 ~하면
Once you make a promise, you should keep it.
일단 약속을 하면 지켜야 한다.
suppose (supposing)(that)~
만약 ~라 한다면
Supposing (that) it rains, what shall you do?
비가 온다면 무엇을 할 겁니까?
provided (that) 만약~라면
I want to go by my car, provided (that) the roads aren't crowded.
만약 도로가 붐비지 않는다면

2) on condition that~한다면
in case~ 하면/ ~하는 경우
so long as~ 하기만 하면/ ~ 하는 이상(= only if)

6. 목적의 부사절을 이끄는 접속사
1) that<so that, in order that>+ S + may+동사(복문)
=to(so as to, in order to)+V (단문)
~하기 위하여/ ~하도록
He works hard that he may support his family.
= He works hard so as to support his family.
그는 가족을 부양하기 위해 열심히 일한다.
I stepped aside (so) that he might pass.
그 남자가 지나가도록 나는 옆으로 비껴섰다.
2) lest~should
~하지 않기 위해/ ~하지 않도록= foe fear that ~should
~하지 않도록/ ~하지나 않을까 하여
Be careful lest you (should) fall from the tree.
나무에서 떨어지지 않도록 조심해라.
She took an umbrella for fear that it should rain.
비가 오지 않을까 하여 그는 우산을 가져갔다.
7. 결과의 부사절을 이끄는 접속사
so+형용사.부사+that~
매우 ~해서 ~하다/ ~할 만큼 ~하다(아래에서 위쪽으로 해석)
He was so kind and good that he was loved by all.
= He was so kind and good as to be loved by all.
This bridge is so made that it opens in the middle.
이 다리는 가운데서 열리도록 만들어졌다.
* not so~that
~할 만큼~아니다
You must not go so far that you cannot return in two hours.
그 남자는 무척 친절하고 좋은 사람이므로 모든 사람의 사랑을 받았다.

매우~해서 ~하다
She is such a kind woman that everybody loves her.
그녀는 매우 친절하므로 누구나 그녀를 사랑한다.
so that~ (그 결과) 그래서~

8. 양보의 부사절을 이끄는 접속사
1) while: 하지만, 그런데 한편, ~임에도
While I admit his merits, I can see his shortcomings.
그의 장점을 인정하지만 약점도 알고 있다.
when: ~에도 불구하고,
비록~ 이지만
She will meddle with me when(through) she is not equal to the task.
그녀는 일을 감당할 만한 능력이 없는데도 불구하고 내 일에 참견하려 든다.
I have only three books when I need seven.
나는 7권의 책이 필요함에도 불구하고 3권 밖에 없다.
2) ~ever(복합 관계사)+(S)+may
= no matter what(how, where....) +S+may
