인생찬가(A Psalm of Life)

  What the Heart of the Young Man Said to the Psalmist

Tell me not, in mournful numbers, 
Life is but an empty dream!

For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

내게 말하지 말라, 구슬픈 가락으로 ,
인생은 한낱 텅 빈 꿈이라고!
왜냐하면 잠든 영혼은 죽은 셈이고,
사물은 것보기와는 다르기에.

Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

인생은 현실이며, 인생은 진지한 것!
무덤이 인생의 목표는 아니다.    
너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가란 말은
영혼을 두고 한 말이 아니다.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow 
Find us further than today.

즐김도 슬픔도

우리의 운명지어진 목표나 길이 아니다.
행동하는 것, 그래서 내일이
오늘보다 더 나은 우리를 발견하리라.

Art is long, and time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating

Funeral marches to the grave.

예술은 길고, 시간은 화살 같다.
그리고 우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하긴 하나,
언제나 천으로 감싼 북마냥, 무덤으로의
장례 행진곡을 울리고 있다.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

세계의 드넒은 전장에서,
인생의 야영장에서,
말 못하는, 쫓기는 가축이 되지 말라!
투쟁에서 영웅이 되라!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,-act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!

미래는 믿지 말라, 아무리 즐겁다 할지라도!
죽은 과거로 하여금 죽은 자를 묻도록 하라!
행동하라, - 살아있는 현재에서!
마음속엔 용기, 머리 위엔 하나님!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

 위대한 사람들의 생애는 모두 우리에게 상기케 한다.
 우리가 우리의 인생을 숭고하게 만들 수 있음을,
 그리고, 떠나면서 우리 뒤에
시간의 모래밭에 발자국을 남길 수 있음을,

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o"er life"s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing shall take heart again.

 발자국, 어쩌면 인생의 엄숙한 바다 위로
 항해하는 다른 사람이,
쓸쓸한 난파당한 형제가,
 보고서, 다시금 용기를 얻게 될 발자국

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
               
자, 그러니 일어나 일하자,
어떠한 운명도 감수할 마음 갖고;
언제나 성취하며, 언제나 추구하며,
일하는 것과 기다리는 법을 배우자

 

생전에 두 아내를 잃었던 그에게 임종직전 한 기자가

 그의 시가 여전히 아름다웠던 비결을 물었더니 그는 창밖의

 사과나무를 손짓하며

 “저 나무는 늙었지만 해마다 달디단 사과를 주렁주렁 맺는다.

 나는 고목을 보지 않고 그 나무의 새 순을 보았다”고 대답했다.

문득 로베르토 베니니의 " 인생은 아름다워" 가 생각 나네요. 그 영화 보면서 웃다가 울다가 했었는데.. 연기력도 구성도 배경도 영상도 모두 아름다웠고 또 슬펐지요. 인생은 아름다운 거겠지요. ^^*
