(서울=연합뉴스) 설승은 기자 = 이재명 대통령은 8일 '세계 여성의 날'을 맞아 "대한민국이 명실상부한 성평등 국가로 거듭나도록 주어진 역할과 책임을 다하겠다"고 약속했다.

이 대통령은 이날 페이스북에 올린 '차이가 차별이 되지 않고, 다름이 배제의 이유가 되지 않는 사회를 향해'라는 제목의 글에서 이같이 밝혔다.

이 대통령은 "매년 이날이 되면 여성의 인권 신장을 위해 애써 오신 분들의 지난한 발걸음을 되새기며 우리 사회의 성평등을 위한 과제를 다시금 돌아보게 된다"고 적었다.

그러면서 "탄핵 이후 처음으로 맞는 올해 세계 여성의 날은 더욱 각별한 의미를 지닌다"며 "2024년 내란 위기 극복을 위해 광장에서 연대했던 여성들이 한국여성단체연합으로부터 '올해의 여성운동상'을 수상했다는 반가운 소식도 전해 들었다"고 언급했다.

특히 "얼마 전까지만 해도 우리는 여성가족부 폐지 공약을 내건 전 정부로 인해 성평등 정책이 축소되고 후퇴하는 시기를 겪기도 했다"며 "이제 그 흐름을 되돌려 성평등 정책을 제자리로 복원하고 과거의 공백을 채우며 실질적인 성평등 사회를 향해 한 걸음 한 걸음 나아가고 있다"고 강조했다.

이어 "누구나 안전하고 존엄하게 살아갈 수 있는 공동체를 반드시 만들겠다"고 거듭 목소리를 높였다.

아울러 이 대통령은 "세계 여성의 날 조직위원회(IWD)는 2026년 세계 여성의 날 주제를 '베풀수록 커진다(#GiveToGain)'로 정했다"며 "우리가 함께 베풀며 가꿔 갈 성평등의 결실이 여성과 남성, 세대와 계층을 넘어 대한민국 국민 모두의 삶에 골고루 스며들길 간절히 소망한다"고 덧붙였다.

SEOUL, March 8 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday pledged to advance gender equality and foster a more inclusive society, marking International Women's Day.

"I will fulfill my given role and responsibility to ensure that the Republic of Korea is reborn as a gender-equal society," Lee wrote on his Facebook page, referring to South Korea's official name.

Lee said gender equality policies were scaled back under the previous administration, which had pledged to abolish the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family but failed, noting that his administration will work to restore and strengthen those efforts.

"(The government) is reversing that trend by restoring gender equality policies to their rightful place, filling the gaps left in the past and moving step by step toward a gender-equal society," he said.

Reflecting on the long journey of those who have worked to advance women's rights, Lee reviewed the remaining tasks needed to achieve gender equality and protect the rights of those who have been discriminated against or marginalized.

"We will build a society where differences do not lead to discrimination and diversity does not become a reason for exclusion -- a community where everyone can live safely and with dignity," he said.
​
International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to honor the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while calling for accelerated gender equality.
