Now to Florida, where Governor Jeb Bush says he will not allow a severely brain-damaged comatose woman to die, despite the fact that the Florida courts have ruled that the feeding tube which keeps her alive may be removed. And late today, the Florida legislature authorized the governor to keep her alive. Here's ABC's Jeffrey Kofman.
With Terri Schiavo on her deathbed inside, the supporters in front her hospice celebrated today's news. They are elated because the Florida legislature has overridden the courts and authorized Governor Jeb Bush to order Schiavo's feeding tube reattached. 'The Supreme Court refuses to hear this case. So, who's going to look out for this girl's rights? We have to.'
Schiavo has no idea of the storm swirling around her. For thirteen years, she has been in a vegetative state. And doctors insist she will never recover consciousness.
Religious groups have rallied around Schiavo, mounting a massive campaign on her behalf, claiming that she is being starved to death. Florida politicians have been flooded with phone calls and e-mails.
Medical ethicists say the politicians are not using sound science to make their decision. 'I believe that most of the legislators probably have just watched the television coverage of this, which has been superficial at best and unbalanced, and without adequate information.'
Despite the lobbying, some politicians would not support the law. 'We don't make laws in this state based on emotion, and that's what we are doing here tonight.'
And tonight, Governor Jeb Bush has already ordered Terri Schiavo's feeding tube reattached.
