(This, too, shall pass away.)
Looking for the Hope
(Jeremiah 29:11-14, NIV) [11] For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. [12] Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. [13] You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. [14] I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile."
There is a story which is written in midrash, one of famous Jewish interpretation books of the Law of Moses. The title of the story is "The ring of king David." One day, king David called a craftsman who is making golden craft, "Make me a beautiful ring. And, carve a sentence on it. The sentence should make me humble when I become arrogant because of the victory in the battle field. And, it should give me courage and hope when I am very disappointed." The gold craftsman troubled several days and asked the prince Solomon for help. Then, prince Solomon wrote down a passage for him. "This, too, shall pass away."
That's right. Even though we have some of success in our life, we should not be boastful. "This, too, shall pass away." "Success and splender. These are like the flowers of grass. And, like the dew of the end of the grass." "This, too, shall pass away." If we accept this sentence humbly, we can make the success as the real success. Even though you failed and fell into trouble, you don't have to worry. You know why? "This, too, shall pass away." Your business is difficult. And, your position in company is also unstable. Your family economy is also difficult. Now a days, in every area, we face the difficult. However, when time goes by, "This, too, shall pass away."
In midrash, it is written that Moses complained to God. Moses did what God commanded him in front of Pharaoh. However, the situation became worse. As the result, Pharaoh became more furious and the Israelites suffered by more severe labor. Therefore, Moses became to be blamed by the people of Israel and was threatened by Pharaoh. Moses complained, "God, instead of deliverance, Israelites became more miserable. Then, God told him, "Be patient. You will see. This is not the end." Then, Moses said, "However, God, we stirred up a hornet’s nest. Look. Things are getting worse." Then, God told him again. "Don't complain what I am doing. I have a plan about what I do." That is right. God has a great plan for each one of us." Therefore, God said, (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV) For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Everybody follow what I am saying. "I will give the prosperous and hopeful future." Now, declare it with faith. "God is giving us the prosperous and hopeful future." Please say to the man/woman beside you. "God will give you the prosperous and hopeful futre." (Psalms 146:5, NIV) Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God. Therefore, please set your hope on the living God. In 2009, what is your hope? What is your target? Recovering the economic status and becoming the developed country and achieving GNP 50,000 dollars? Is your hope to receive 2 billion won as a salary in a fine company? Yes, it sounds good. However, please don't be deceived.
Let us think about the international economic situations which influence us through Christian eyes. Specially, our country suffered by the national bankrupt and received relief loan from IMF. It was an accident which had happened only Korea. However, Last year, because of the international credit crunch which occurred in U.S.A., we are facing more critical economic crisis. The shrink of the natural economy gets rid of the hope of the common people. Why these things happen to us? How do you think why these things happen to us? Because of unluck? Because of the weakness of the economic foundation?
Let us read the verse 11. For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. God said that His plan toward Israelites was not disasters. At that time, they were placed in bad surroundings. They faced the worst disaster. Israel was totally destroyed. Numerous people were killed in the war against the super strong nation, Babylon. And, according to the verse 2, Babylon carried away all the useful people such as politicians, intellectuals, and engineers to their nation. All of their treasures were plundered. The cities were burned and destroyed. The land was devastated. Babylon left only poor and uneducated people in the land. Therefore, even though they were given freedom by Babylon, there was nobody who can rebuild the nation. Israel had no power. The nation was literally totally destroyed.
The Lamentations of the prisoners were written in Psalms 137.
(Psalms 137:1-6, NIV) [1] By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. [2] There on the poplars we hung our harps, [3] for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!" [4] How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land? [5] If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. [6] May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.
Even though they had burning heart for their mother nation, the captived Israelites were losing their hope to return back to Jerusalem and to rebuild Israel as the time passed. Among the captived Israelites, there were some prophets. Because they also loved their country and the people, they wanted to give hope to the Israelites and said, "Before long, you will be free and return back to Jerusalem. Do not lose your hope. I had a dream from God. I received revelation from God." However, those were not the plan and word of God, but was the wish from man.
Like this, even though their hope was to return back to Jerusalem and rebuild the nation, God's plan was to stay them for 70 years in Babylon. Therefore, Jeremiah sent a letter to the captived Israelites to know the will of God, [11] For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. After 70 years, a man who was captived in 15 years old will be 85 years old. Then, how many people can return back to Jerusalem? Only those who were born in Babylon could return back to Jerusalem. Are these really the peace of God and the hope in future? How do you think about it? We can find the answer from the chapter 2 of Hosea.
(Hosea 2:13-17, NIV) [13] I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals; she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, but me she forgot," declares the LORD. [14] "Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her. [15] There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will sing as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. [16] "In that day," declares the LORD, "you will call me 'my husband'; you will no longer call me 'my master.' [17] I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips; no longer will their names be invoked.
Remember that. I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals. "Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak tenderly to her. There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips; no longer will their names be invoked."
Israelites expected abundant and peaceful life. And, they thought that they could establish it by serving Baals who is the god of abundance. However, God allowed Israelites for 70 years disastrous period to renew them and to give them the real peace, hope, and eternal life.
Now, let us think about our situation. We got the democracy system within 40 years. Now, even though somebody says, "We should sew the mouth of the president," he won't be punished. Like this, we accomplished the freedom of press. Just 40 years ago, Korean president Jung-Hee Park asked the president of Philippines how we can follow the economic level of Philippines. Then, within 40 years, we became the 11th big economic country in the world. People call it a miracle of Han river. However, was it an accident? Was the result of our effort? There are many nations which even people worked very hard, but failed in their vision. The miracle of the Han river is the blessing of God. It was the river where many Christian martyrs and martyress spread their blood on the riverside. Sae-Nam-Teu martyrs' place, Beheaded mountain, and the tombs of the missionaries are located on the riverside. God sent the miracles on the ground where the martyrs and martyress spread the blood. And, God will bless Korea to spread the gospel in the world and to share the love and blessings of God. In 2050, God will make Korea the second biggest economic country in the world. Then, why God allows us this kinds of severe economic difficulties?
What did we hope for? What was the goal of our life that we sought with all our hearts? We hoped for an abundant and peaceful life. Had we not had a greater faith for Baal, the god of abundance, rather than our own Heavenly Father, while we did not know it? We put our hopes in this. We have committed sin by treating foam like an unshakable, eternal foundation. Rather than relying on God, the foundation, we have committed sin by laying the foundations of our life with foam and building our life upon it. It is the sin of having lived with lust and desire as the goal of our lives. The foamy economy, this was our interest, and according to it our joys and sadness alternated. It became an addiction. And so we needed more, and just at a prediction that the sales would decrease, we became uneasy. Isn't God shaking even our foundations because only by shaking it, we can seek the true peace and hope that God gives us? God has taken us captive through the international economy to give us true peace and hope. At times he takes our business and workplace captive and sometimes he takes the knowledge and technology, and the funds we rely on, captive. He takes us captive healthily. In front of a crisis, we can see that the knowledge and experience we were proud of were actually useless, and the economic foundations we thought stood firm was actually nothing more than foam.
But despite this we earnestly hope to escape from this crisis. We must not be like the Israelites who did not realize the meaning of God when they were taken captive, and wanted to return quickly to rebuild their country and peace and prosperity. Like the word saying He would take us to the desert and speak tenderly to us, He leads us to difficult places and asks for repentance. He uses the Valley of Achor as the door of hope. The Valley of Achor is the place where Achan and his family were executed for committing a sin of avarice. I believe that God has pushed us into the Valley of Achor to break the lives depending on material things, and relying on property rather than God, and the lives with a goal of greed. There must first be a thorough repentance about this.
(1 Timothy 6:17-19, NIV) [17] Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. [18] Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. [19] In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
I hope you will remember the will of God towards us.
It is important that the economy quickly recovers and heads toward a 50 thousand dollar era. We also need to give hope and courage to those despairing in pain in the midst of this crisis. We also need to pray to escape this crisis. But to hope for this first and seek this first is the trick of the devil. It is a false prophesy. There is something more important, and there is something that must first be done. In verses 11-12 it says, [11] For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. [12] Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
What must we pray for, and cry out for? We must cry out in repentance, and pray in contrition. We must repent and turn back. What must we seek and seek? It is God. And we must seek the true hope and peace that God is trying to give us. More than material things, more than our success, we must become people who first seek His kingdom and His righteousness. More than our own possessions and our own glory, we must love God and love our neighbors. We must become people who love God with all their hearts and all their lives and love our neighbors like ourselves. The goal of our economic lives should be to spread the love and blessings of God to our neighbors and to the whole world. We must have our goal on heaven and eternal life. We must hope for the salvation of all people. It must become our wish and our hope to give our possessions and talent and even our lives to accomplish this. We must think for this and study for this. We must sweat for this and lay restless at night and work for this. This must remain in our hearts.
To accomplish this God has given us 70 years of hardship. I hope you will seek and find the true peace and hope that God gives you in the midst of these things.
