북한 축구 선수들이 12년 만에 한국 땅을 밟는다. KFA(대한축구협회)는 4일 “북한의 여자 축구팀 ‘내고향여자축구단’이 한국에서 열리는 2025-2026시즌 AFC 여자 챔피언스리그 4강·결승전 경기 참가를 확정했다고 AFC(아시아축구연맹)를 통해 알려왔다”고 공식 발표했다. 북한 여자 축구 선수들의 방남(訪南)은 지난 2014년 인천 아시안게임 이후 12년 만이다. 국가대표팀이 아닌 클럽 축구팀이 방한하는 건 이번이 역대 처음이다. 북한 체육인의 방남 자체도 2018년 이후 8년 만의 일이다.

내고향여자축구단은 오는 20일 수원종합운동장에서 수원 FC 위민과 남북 4강 대결을 펼칠 예정. 내고향여자축구단은 북한의 소비재 기업인 ‘내고향’의 후원을 받는 기업형 축구단으로 선수단 상당수가 최근 국제 연령별 월드컵 우승 경험이 있는 강팀이다. 수원 역시 지소연, 김혜리 등 베테랑 국가대표들이 포진한 강팀이라 박진감 넘치는 경기가 펼쳐질 전망이다.

남북 축구 교류 역사는 1990년 첫 물꼬를 텄다. 남북 정부의 협의 아래 분단 이후 최초의 스포츠 교류인 남북 통일 축구 대회가 열려 남북 축구 대표팀이 평양과 서울을 오가며 친선 경기를 치렀다. 2008년과 2009년에는 북한 대표팀이 2010 남아공 월드컵 지역 예선을 위해 서울을 방문한 적이 있다. 2014년 인천 아시안게임 때는 남녀 축구 대표팀이 모두 한국 땅을 밟았는데, 당시 북한 여자 축구는 준결승에서 한국을 만나 2대1 승리를 거두고, 결승에선 일본을 꺾고 한국 땅에서 금메달을 목에 걸기도 했다.

마지막 교류는 2019년 평양에서 열린 2022 카타르 월드컵 아시아 예선 경기였다. 당시 북한은 일방적으로 무관중 경기를 강행하고 한국의 생중계 요청도 모두 묵살하면서 외신에서 “기괴한 유령 경기”라는 비판이 일기도 했다. 한국 최고 스타 손흥민도 당시 방북했는데 “별로 기억하고 싶지 않다. 다치지 않은 것만 해도 큰 수확”이라고 했다. 일부 선수들은 북한 측에서 호텔 방을 도청한 것 같다고 주장했다.

North Korean football players will step on South Korean soil for the first time in 12 years.
