Anti-Japanese rallies took place in southern cities in mainland China on Sunday amid a recent territorial row between China and Japan over islets in the East China Sea, witnesses said.

Some 1,000 people gathered in Shenzhen, a city in Guangdong Province near Hong Kong, and marched in the city center, shouting "down with Japanese militarism."

Riot police arrived at the scene, but did not take any measures to stop the protest, one of the witnesses said.

The latest Sino-Japanese row began after pro-China activists from Hong Kong landed on one of the disputed islands, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan.

The islands are long claimed by both China and Japan, as well as Taiwan.

The activists were deported by the Japanese authorities on Friday.

At neighboring Guangzhou, the capital and largest city of Guangdong Province, hundreds of people protested in front of a hotel where the Japanese Consulate General is located.

The protesters accused Japan of illegitimately occupying the islets, chanting anti-Japanese slogans, such as "Return Diaoyutai,"

"Japanese, get out," and "Ban Japanese products."

They burned Japanese flags and distributed Chinese flags to passersby, a source said. (Yonhap News)

일본이 지난주 영토 분쟁지 센카쿠 열도(중국명 댜오위다오)에 상륙한 홍콩 시위대를 추방하자 19일 중국 여러 지역에서 반일본 시위가 벌어졌다고 교도통신이 전했다.

보도에 따르면 광둥성 선전에서는 이날 약 1,000명이 집회에 참가해 일장기를 태우고 댜오위다오가 중국 영토라고 주장했다.

상하이를 비롯해 10여개 도시에서 일본에 항의하는 집회를 열자고 요구하는 글이 인터넷에 올랐다.

한편 이날 오전 일본인 10명이 일장기를 들고 센카쿠의 우오츠리섬에 상륙했다.
