마스킹(Masking) = 커버링(Covering)

미술이나 건축/인테리어 등의 분야에서는 물감이나 페인트 등으로 필요한 부분만을 칠하기 위해 불필요한 부분을 원하는 형태로 가리는 것을 지칭한다.

마스킹(Masking)이란 무언가를 덮어 가리는 행위를 뜻하는 단어로 다양한 의미로 사용된다..

심리학에서는 스스로의 정신적 결함을 감추고 '정상인'으로 위장하여 살아가는 기술이다. 

커버링(Covering)의 하위 개념으로 볼 수 있다.

In psychology and sociology, masking is the process in which an individual camouflages their natural personality or behavior to conform to social pressures, abuse, or harassment. Masking can be strongly influenced by environmental factors such as authoritarian parents, rejection, and emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. Masking can be a behavior individuals adopt subconsciously as coping mechanisms or a trauma response, or it can be a conscious behavior an individual adopts to fit in within perceived societal norms. Masking is interconnected with maintaining performative behavior within social structures and cultures.


"Masking" is the act of voluntarily concealing one's true personality, as if behind a metaphorical, physical mask

In Marxist philosophy, a character mask (German: Charaktermaske) is a prescribed social role which conceals the contradictions of a social relation or order.
The term was used by Karl Marx in published writings from the 1840s to the 1860s, and also by Friedrich Engels. It is related to the classical Greek concepts of mimesis (imitative representation using analogies) and prosopopoeia (impersonation or personification), and the Roman concept of persona, but also differs from them. Neo-Marxist and non-Marxist sociologists, philosophers and anthropologists have used character masks to interpret how people relate in societies with a complex division of labour, where people depend on trade to meet many of their needs. Marx's own notion of the character mask was not a fixed idea with a singular definition.
