청춘(靑春)

靑春(청춘)이란

人生의 어느 期間을 말하는 것이 아니라,
마음의 狀態(상태)를 말하는 것이다.

청춘은 장미빛 뺨, 앵두 같은 입술, 하늘거리는 자태가 아니라,
강인한 意志, 뛰어난 想像力, 불타는 情熱,

겁내지 않는 勇猛心, 안이를 뿌리치는 冒險心,
이러한 상태를 말하는 것이다.

세월을 거듭하는 것만으로 사람은 늙지 않는다.
理想(이상)을 잃을 때 비로소 늙게 된다.

세월이 흐르면 피부에 주름이 지나,

情熱(정렬)을 잃으면 精神(정신)이 시든다.

고민, 의심, 불안, 공포, 실망...
이런 것들이야말로 마치 긴 세월처럼 사람을 늙게 하고,
精氣(정기)있는 靈魂(영혼)을 죽게 한다.

나이가 60이든 16이든,
누구나 가슴 속에 간직할 수 있는 것은

驚異(경이)에의 愛慕心(애모심),
즉 하늘의 별들 그리고 별처럼 빛나는 事物(사물)과

思想(이상)에 대한 欽仰(흠앙),
앞에 가로 놓인 일에 대한 불굴의 挑戰(도전),
어린 아이와 같은 끊임없는 探求心(탐구심),
인생에 대한 歡喜(환희)와 興味(흥미)인 것이다.

사람은 信念(신념)을 가지면 젊고 疑惑(의혹)을 가지면 늙는다.
사람은 自信(자신)을 가지면 젊고 恐怖(공포)를 가지면 늙는다.
사람은 希望(희망)이 있으면 젊고 失望(실망)이 있으면 늙는다.

大地(대지)로부터, 조물주로부터, 사람으로부터

아름다움과 喜悅(희열), 勇氣(용기)와 威嚴(위엄) 그리고 偉力(위력)

이러한 靈感(영감)을 받는 한,
사람의 젊음은 사라지지 않는다.

영감이 끊어지고,
悲嘆(비탄)의 白雪(백설)이 사람의 마음 속 깊이 덮고
冷笑(냉소)의 얼음이 이를 굳게 닫게 되면
비로소 사람은 眞正(진정)으로 늙게 되며
하느님의 慈悲(자비)를 구할 수밖에 없게 된다.

영어원문

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;

it is not a matter of rosy cheeks,

red lips and supple knees;

it is a matter of the will,

a quality of the imagination,

a vigor of the emotions;

it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of

courage over timidity of the appetite,

for adventure over the love of ease.

This often exists in a man of sixty more than a body of twenty.

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin,

but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart

and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen,

there is in every human being's heart

the lure of wonder,

the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next,

and the joy of the game of living.

In the center of your heart

and my heart there is a wireless station;

so long as it receives messages of beauty,

hope, cheer, courage

and power from men and from the Infinite,

so long are you young.

When the aerials are down,

and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism

and the ice of pessimism,

then you are grown old, even at twenty,

but as long as your aerials are up,

to catch the waves of optimism,

there is hope you may die young at eighty.
