1. Demand Trend of Plywood, Fiberboard and Particle Board in Malaysia
○ Tropical timber trade plays an important role in the resource-based socio-economic development of Malaysia.
○ In 2009, the timber sector was the fifth largest export earner for the country and maintains its position as strong driving force within the industry. In 2010 the timber sector contributed to 3,7% of the GDP and 3,2% of the country‘s total merchandise export. (sourced from Malaysia AHK)
○ The wood-based industry in Malaysia can be described as large, with almost 5,870 manufacturing establishments. 80-90% of them are regarded as SME(Small or Medium Enterprises), only the rest are regarded as big companies.
○ According to the Economic Contribution of The Timber and Furniture Industry, 2011 report conducted by MTIB, the market size for timber product export is RM 20.0 billion where domestic market size is only RM 13.0 billion.
○ Primary timber products(logs, sawnwood, veneer and plywood) and secondary processed wood products(SPWP) develop the tropical timber markets.
○ Plywood has become a much more standardized product, because the process enhances the qualities even more, with the composite structure and glue.
○ In fact, plywood is the second largest export earner in the timber trade in Malaysia.
○ The range of plywood products produced in Malaysia includes common veneer-faced plywood, overlaid plywood such as printed-paper and polyester plywood, plywood for concrete framework and marine plywood.
○ Malaysian plywood has achieved international standards such as the Japan Agriculture Standards(JAS), British Standards(BS) and International Hardwood Products Association Standards(IHPA) for the US market and Harmonized European Standards(EN) for Europe.
○ According to STA, the demand for export market is consider high, where Japan is the biggest partner in exporting plywood, following by South Korea. Miss Mirian said that STA had signed a MOU with Korea Wood Panel Association and would like to invite Korea Wood Panel Association to visit to Malaysia to have a meeting.
○ According to Ta Ann Holdings Bhd, the demand for plywood in domestic market is lower than the international market. They usually export more than distributing locally in Malaysia. For their long term and trust worthy partner who has been worked together for 10~20 years, they will offer TT payment terms but normally the manufacturer would prefer LC term when distributing/ exporting plywood.
