Description
Kopsia arborea grows up to 14 metres (50 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of up to 10 centimetres (4 in). The bark is grey. Its flowers feature a white corolla. The fruits are blue-black, ellipsoid or roundish, up to 4.2 cm (2 in) long. In China, local traditional medicinal uses include as an enema and as a treatment for tonsilitis.

The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only living species of the genus Cocos. The term "coconut" (or the archaic "cocoanut") can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which botanically is a drupe, not a nut. The name comes from the old Portuguese word coco, meaning "head" or "skull", after the three indentations on the coconut shell that resemble facial features. They are ubiquitous in coastal tropical regions and are a cultural icon of the tropics.

딜(Dill)이라는 이름은 스칸디나비아어의 딜라(dilla)에서 유래됐다. 딜라는 우리나라 말로 ‘진정시키다’, ‘달래다’의 뜻을 가지고 있는데, 오래 전부터 딜에는 진정작용과 최면효과가 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 복통이 심할 때나 아이가 지나칠 정도로 예민해졌을 때 딜을 달인 물을 먹여 진정시켰다. 소화촉진과 구취제거에도 효과가 있다.
유럽의 거의 모든 나라에서는 음식에 딜을 사용한다. 초기 북미 정착민들은 오랜 시간 이어지는 예배의 지루함과 허기를 달래기 위해 딜의 씨를 먹으면서 예배를 드렸다고 한다. 북미에서는 딜이 ‘교회예배용 씨’로 알려져 있다. 딜은 향기가 강하다. 잎은 깃털같이 생겼고 녹색을 띤 푸른색이다. 전통적으로 유럽에서는 딜의 잎을 오이피클의 맛을 내는 데 사용했다. 딜을 뜨거운 음식에 넣을 때는 식탁에 내기 전에 넣어야 향이 오랫동안 유지된다. 영국에서 딜은 인기 있는 허브로 생연어요리에 사용한다. 호텔 주방에서는 생선소스에 많이 사용하는데 딜은 비린내를 제거해주면서 생선 고유의 맛을 느끼도록 해준다. 씨와 잎 모두 사용이 가능하다.
최 교수의 향신료 이야기
사용하고 남은 딜, 로즈메리 같은 프레시 향신료는 말려서 요리에 쓰거나, 식초나 백포도주, 올리브오일에 담갔다가 프렌치드레싱을 만들 때 넣으면 좋다. 만드는 법도 어렵지 않다. 담금액에 담긴 허브는 요리에 사용하기도 하지만 인테리어상 주방 소품으로도 훌륭한 역할을 해 일석이조의 효과를 볼 수 있다. 향신료 오일과 식초를 3:1 비율로 섞은 샐러드드레싱을 만들어 사용하면 샐러드의 맛을 한층 올려준다.
