흥미로운 것은 우리 안의 익숙함과 밖에서의 경이로움이다. 한국인에게 나전칠기는 때로 ‘할머니 장롱’의 기억으로 남아 낡은 물건처럼 여겨지지만, 외국인의 눈에는 작은 조개껍질이 만들어내는 빛과 문양이 놀라운 한국의 공예예술로 다가온다

그래서 봉은사 첫날의 풍경은 더욱 뜻깊었다. 천년 고찰을 찾은 시민과 외국인들이 장인의 작품 앞에서 “이 작품 제작하는데 몇 달 걸리나요?”,“옻칠은 몇 번 칠하나요” 몇 번을 다시 질문하고 감탄하는 순간, 오래된 공예는 과거형에서 현재형으로 바뀌었다.
