이재명 대통령이 윤석열 정부에서 중단됐던 서울~양평 고속도로 건설 사업 재개를 지시했다고 20일 청와대가 밝혔다. 이 사업은 경기도 지역 숙원 사업이지만, 노선 변경 특혜 의혹이 불거지면서 3년 가까이 중단됐다. 그런데 정부가 기존 노선을 원점에서 재검토해 2029년 착공, 2035년까지 완공한다는 계획을 내놨다.

홍익표 청와대 정무수석비서관은 이날 브리핑에서 “이 대통령의 지시로 정부는 고속도로 건설 지연에 따른 지역주민들의 불편을 해소하기 위해 서울~양평 고속도로 사업을 재개하기로 결정했다”고 했다. 홍 수석은 “먼저 기획예산처는 올 상반기 중에 사업을 재개하기 위한 예산 지원 방안을 마련할 예정”이라며 “이에 기반해 새로운 타당성 조사 용역을 발주하고, 지역 주민과 미래 세대를 위한 최적의 노선을 신속히 결정해 2029년 말에는 사업에 착공할 수 있게 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

정부는 양서면과 강상면을 종점으로 하는 기존 두 가지 노선안을 모두 원점에서 재검토하기로 했다. 홍 수석은 “원안(양서면)과 수정안(강상면) 모두를 검토하는 것은 물론, 새로운 타당성 조사 과정에서 합리적인 노선이 나온다면 이 역시 반영할 수 있다”며 “중요한 것은 경제성과 주민 편의성”이라고 했다.

대통령의 사업 재개 지시에 대해 홍 수석은 “그동안 지역주민과 지자체, 그리고 정치권에서는 특혜 문제와 별개로, 국민 편의와 지역 염원 등을 고려해 수도권 동부 핵심 교통축이 될 서울~양평 고속도로 사업의 신속한 재개를 지속적으로 촉구해 왔다”며 “게다가 오는 2029년에는 교산 신도시까지 입주를 앞두고 있는 상황이라는 걸 고려할 때 서울~양평 고속도로 사업은 더 이상 미룰 수 없는 과제”라고 했다.
