자녀와 후손들에게
물려주어야 할 것
bequeath
[bikwíːð]
You have little property to BEQUEATH to your children.
"자네는 자녀들에게 물려줄 큰 재산이 없으니까,
아이들이 재산 때문에 다툼을
하지 않는 것,
좋게 봐야할지 그렇지
않아야 할런지 ㅡ
물려줄 재산이 없으면 부모의 명예를
유산으로 남기면 재상 상속에 비해
'더 괜찮은' 상속이라고 주장하는데
나는 어떤지 모르겠다.
I scarcely BEQUEATH
a good name to kids.
나는 좋은 이름을 자녀들에게
거의 물려주지 못한다.
미국의 억만장자의 유언에서운함을 느끼는 자녀들이
있다고 한다.
The egoism children were upset about their father’s decision
to BEQUEATH his entire estate to the church.
그 이기주의인 자녀들은 그들의 부자 아버지가 재산을
교회에 물려줄 결정에 대해 대해 신경이 날카로웠다.
이런 부모의 결정은
자녀들을 덜 섭섭할 것이다.
Many rich people in America BEQUEATH their property
not only to their spouses and children but also to none-profit organizations like churches
미국의 많은 부자들을 그들의 재산을 배우자와 자녀들에게 줄 뿐만 아니라
교회와 같은 비영리 기관에 증여한다.
bequeath 은 Old English 에 뿌리를 두었는데
be (이루다, 완전하다)라는 접두어에
cweðan (말하다 강력하게 권고하다) 를 합친 낱말이다
그냥 담소하면서 나눈 말이 아니라
어떤 의미를 지닌 언어를 전달한다는 뜻이다.
What will you BEQUEATH to your spousse or children?
당신은 배우자나 자녀들에게 무엇을
(유산으로) 증여할 것인가..?!
Let parents, then, bequeath to their children not a heap of riches, but the spirit of reverence.
This is the world we have BEQUEATHED to you.
Lessons of the past are BEQUEATHED to future generations.
그래서 미국에는 젊은이는 거의 없고
노인만 20 명 정도 출석하는 교회도 '재산' 이 차고 넘치는 곳도 꽤 된다고 한다.
물론 bequeath 는 재산만 물려주는 것에 사용되지 않는다.
It is true that colonialism did not bequeath much to Africa or Asia .
식민 국가가 아프리카나 아시아에 많은 것을 전해주지 않았다는 것은 사실이다
더 잘 사는 나라가 후진국에게
그들이 살기 좋은 여건이나 종교 따위를 전수하지 않았다는 말이다.
성경의 예를 보자
You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property
and can make them slaves for life

bequeath (v.)
Old English becweðan "to say, speak to, exhort, blame," also "leave by will;" from be- + cweðan "to say," from Proto-Germanic *kwithan (see quoth). The simple verb cweðan became obsolete, but its old, strong past tense survived through Middle English as quoth.
The original sense of "say, utter" died out 13c., leaving the word with only the legal sense of "transfer by legacy." Compare bequest. "An old word kept alive in wills" [OED 1st ed.]. Old English bequeðere meant "interpreter, translator." Related: Bequeathed; bequeathing.

be-
word-forming element of verbs and nouns from verbs, with a wide range of meaning: "about, around; thoroughly, completely; to make, cause, seem; to provide with; at, on, to, for;" from Old English be- "about, around, on all sides" (the unstressed form of bi "by;" see by (prep.)). The form has remained by- in stressed positions and in some more modern formations (bylaw, bygones, bystander).
The Old English prefix also was used to make transitive verbs and as a privative prefix (as in behead). The sense "on all sides, all about" naturally grew to include intensive uses (as in bespatter "spatter about," therefore "spatter very much," besprinkle, etc.). Be- also can be causative, or have just about any sense required. The prefix was productive 16c.-17c. in forming useful words, many of which have not survived, such as bethwack "to thrash soundly" (1550s) and betongue "to assail in speech, to scold" (1630s).
bequest (n.)
c. 1300, "act of bequeathing," from be- + *cwis, *cwiss "saying" (related to quoth, from Proto-Germanic *kwessiz, from PIE root *gwet- "to say, speak"). Also compare bequeath. With unetymological -t (as in behest). The meaning "legacy, that which is bequeathed" is recorded from late 15c.
quoth (v.)
"to say, say as follows," from Middle English quoth, from Old English cweþ (Mercian), cwæþ (Northumbrian), third person singular past tense of cweoþan, cweoþa "to say, speak; name, call; declare, proclaim" (Middle English quethan), from Proto-Germanic *kwethanan (source also of Old Saxon quethan, Old Norse kveða, Old Frisian quetha, Old High German quedan, Gothic qiþan).
This is often traced to PIE root *gwet- "to say, speak," but Boutkan, on the grounds of formal objection to proposed cognates (Sanskrit gadati "speaks," Old Welsh guetid "say," Latin vetare "not allow"), has it as of "no (certain) IE etymology," and writes, "This is complicated."
Related to bequeath and bequest. Compare also archaic interjection quotha "forsooth, indeed," originally "said he," 1510s in sarcastic use, "originally a parenthetical phrase used in repeating the words of another with more or less contempt or disdain" [Century Dictionary], from Middle English, from Old English cwæðe ge.
