Michael "The Wild Thing" Wilson
Interview by Anthony Petosa (Tha Arsenal)
Anthony: Hey Michael. Thank you for taking the time for DunkNation.com to interview you.
Michael Wilson: No problem man. Happy to do it.
Anthony: How old were you when you first dunked?
Michael Wilson: I was about 13. In the eighth grade I think. I did a two handed dunk in a game.
Anthony: Back when you were at Memphis you were reported to have a 50-inch vertical. How true was that?
Michael Wilson: It was true. They did all kinds of tests trying to figure out why I could jump so high.
Anthony: So it is basically God given?
Michael Wilson: Just God given.
Anthony: So did your vertical ever officially get tested?
Michael Wilson: Yes. It was tested at 55 inches back in college.
Anthony: In 1996 you were in the college slam dunk contest. You were a heavy favorite. How did that contest go?
Michael Wilson: That was my first real dunk contest I had ever been in. Back then they had fans call in throughout the contest. I think I rang in like 30,000 votes and the next closest guy had like 500.
Anthony: You made it to the finals against Darvin Ham, but missed a tough off the glass, over a ball rack dunk. What happened?
Michael Wilson: I just missed it. I didn't know what else to do so I just thought of something. I wanted to raise the hoop up to 12 feet but they wouldn't let me. Everyone knows I won that contest though.
Anthony: Since you have been on the Globetrotter's you have made some history dunking on some high hoops. You want to explain a little about that?
Michael Wilson: Back in college a guy named Joey Johnson had the world record for highest slam dunk at 11 feet 8 inches. I can do that height with two hands now. I broke that. (Michael dunked for the record on 12 feet) I also dunked on 12 feet 2 inches but it was unofficial, although 20,000 people saw it so I don't know.
Anthony: Do you attempt these dunks with the ball in your hand or on a lob?
Michael Wilson: I can do it with the ball in my hand. It really doesn't matter.
Anthony: Most people with crazy hops have always been asked the question, "can you touch the top of the backboard?" Can you?
Michael Wilson: Never. It would be like jumping into a wall. You would need perfect form to be able to go up and touch it without running into the backboard. Plus a 70-inch vertical.
Anthony: Recently SLAM Magazine released their Top 50 Dunkers of All-Time and they had you ranked at number 13. Did you agree with that ranking?
Michael Wilson: It's really an honor. I never saw it but people told me there were some good guys ahead of me like Jordan and Wilkins. So, it's just an honor to be in the same league as those kind of guys.
Anthony: What dunker/dunkers inspire you?
Michael Wilson: Michael Jordan, Dominique, Dr. J. I liked Barkley too with his power dunks.
Anthony: I've noticed most of your dunks are off two feet. Is that the way you prefer to jump or do you jump off one foot too?
Michael Wilson: Both. I can jump off one foot just has high as two. But I prefer going off two foot for stability. So I don't get hurt.
Anthony: Did you watch this years NBA dunk contest?
Michael Wilson: No. I was in Atlanta doing some promotional stuff for FUBU. I saw some of the dunks though.
Anthony: What did you think of it?
Michael Wilson: It was ok. I have been doing a lot of those dunks since high school. Like the elbow dunk, I did that back in high school. Those NBA guys know what I can do though.
Anthony: If you were in a dunk contest and could only do one dunk, what would Michael Wilson pull out?
Michael Wilson: I'd have to say a between the legs 360 off two feet.
Anthony: Well Michael, you have a lot of fans out there including myself. Is there anything you'd like to say to them?
Michael Wilson: Just want to say hi to all my fans. Keep going to DunkNation.com and that I really appreciate all the support. If you fans want to get a hold of me e-mail me.
