홍준표 전 대구시장은 2일 “후임 대구시장이 능력 있고 중앙정부와 타협이 되는 사람이 되었으면 좋겠다는 뜻에서 김부겸 전 국무총리를 언급한 것”이라면서 “민주당을 지지한 게 아니라 김부겸을 지지했다고 봐 달라”고 말했다. 민주당 소속으로 대구시장에 출마하는 김 전 총리에게 힘을 실은 것이다. 김 전 총리도 “홍 전 시장을 만나겠다”고 화답했다.

홍 전 시장은 이날 페이스북 글에서 “자치단체장은 행정가이지 싸움꾼이 아니다”라면서 “대구에 도움이 된다면 당을 떠나 정치꾼이 아닌 역량 있는 행정가를 뽑아야 한다”고 말했다.

홍 전 시장은 “부산은 스윙 보터 지역이라서 민주당이 가덕신공항도 해주고 해양수산부도 이전해 주지만, 대구는 막무가내식 투표를 하니까 민주당 정권이 도와주지도 않고 버린 자식 취급을 하는 것”이라고도 했다. 전략적 투표의 필요성을 강조한 것으로 해석된다. 국민의힘 소속 대구 국회의원들을 향해서는 “당 때문에 당선된 사람들이지 자기 경쟁력으로 된 사람이 없다”고 했다.
