NBA Rumors - InsideHoops.com

"The Magic have made it little secret that they are seeking a major upgrade at point guard this offseason -- be it through the June 26 NBA Draft or in the July free-agency period. The Magic hold the 15th pick of the first round and will likely have their pick of Oregon's Luke Ridnour, Louisville's Reece Gaines, Kansas' Hinrich or rising Brazilian Leandrinho Barbosa. Which direction the Magic head is likely to change several times over the course of the next month. "(The 15th pick) is a tough choice because there are so many good players out there at point guard," said Marty Blake, the NBA's scouting guru. "I call it the year of the point guard. There's all of those guys (Ridnour, Hinrich and Gaines) and also guys like Marcus Banks in Vegas, Troy Bell from Boston College, Jermaine Boyette who many don't know about from Weber State, Jason Gardner (of Arizona), Marcus Hatten (St. John's) and Hollis Price (Oklahoma). They're all kind of shooting point guards, but they can play." Florida Today
"Allen Iverson might soon have company as the top basketball pitchman for Reebok. As in LeBron James. The British-based athletic shoe company has made the best monetary offer and could be close to signing James to a long-term endorsement deal that exceeds $75 million, according to sources inside and outside the sports business industry." Akron Beacon Journal
"Sources said Nike is on the verge of signing a deal with Syracuse freshman Carmelo Anthony, the player many believe will be chosen second in the draft behind James. Nike also is expected to sign Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant. Adidas, meanwhile, is close to adding another ``NBA superstar,'' to join the ranks of Tracy McGrady and Tim Duncan." Akron Beacon Journal
"Jacksonville high school basketball fans have seen Antonio Lawrence's name on a lot of lists over the years. Lists of statistical leaders, top prospects lists, lists of the dozen or more schools he attended while his hoops skills sent him through transfer after transfer. Now, the former Wolfson and Jackson star has shown up on two more lists, two of the last his career needs: the list of early-eligibles for the NBA Draft, and Andy Katz's list of the draft's worst possible decisions. Katz, of ESPN, no doubt got his information straight from NBA scouts or front-office people, which means the very people Lawrence needs to impress are calling him a stay-away player." Florida Times-Union
"The NBA is finalizing plans for the Grizzlies to play two preseason games in Europe before the start of the 2003-04 season, according to league sources. Bolstered by the presence of Spanish forward Pau Gasol, the Griz are expected to face F.C. Barcelona (Gasol's former team) in Spain. The Grizzlies also will meet Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs in France. It is expected that the early October trip would last at least five days. An announcement is expected before the end of the NBA playoffs." Memphis Commercial Appeal
"Indiana Pacers' guard Reggie Miller underwent what was described as successful arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle Monday and is expected to make a complete recovery. Loose cartilage and bone spurs were removed from the ankle in surgery performed by Pacers' team doctor Sanford Kunkel at OrthoIndy Surgery Center." Indianapolis Star
"Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups is sick of talking about how his sprained left ankle is healing. He injured it May 6, during Game 1 of a semifinal series with Philadelphia. It has been healing slowly, but steadily, and Billups is almost back to normal. "I'm doing fine, and I'm going to leave it at that," Billups said. "There's really nothing more to say." Billups has been given the tough task of guarding speedy Nets point guard Jason Kidd, something that tests even the healthiest of ankles." Detroit News

"Unless the Mavericks thoroughly disgrace themselves against the Spurs, we'll probably never be able to confirm what evil lurks in the heart of Mark Cuban regarding Don Nelson's coaching future in Dallas. According to educated speculation, coming into the playoffs, the bizarre billionaire was prepared to make a powerful play (let your imagination be your guide) for Heat minority owner/president/coach Pat Riley, had his Mavs mortifyingly malfunctioned - as was almost the case against the Blazers who nearly became the first team in NBA history to overcome an 0-3 deficit." NY Post
"Conjecture is not an issue concerning the Cavaliers and whom Gordon Gund has identified as the principal candidates for his team's coaching job. Those in the know pinpoint Jeff Van Gundy (already interviewed) and Paul Silas (a meeting is planned before Thursday's lottery drawing) as the two people. "It's their job to turn down," says the informant, intimating Van Gundy is first choice. Should both demur, for whatever reason, the next two choices, I'm informed, are Eddie Jordan and Scott Skiles. Silas figures to be the favored contender to fill the Hawks' cavity if Mike Dunleavy decides against joining Fort Worth friend-of-the-family David McDavid in Atlanta for more desirable surroundings. Insight: Silas' agent, Lonnie Cooper, brokered the sale of the team to McDavid," NY Post
"Portland's opening round of interviews for its GM vacancy got underway yesterday, sources divulge, with Celtic GM Chris Wallace. Allen and vice chairman Burt Kolde are leaning toward someone who has been the top guy (no ex-players need apply; guess this leaves me and Clyde Drexler out) vs. an up and comer. So we're talking Wallace, John Nash, Kevin O'Connor (signed long-term extension with the Jazz last year), Magic GM John Gabriel (one year left) and Ernie Grunfeld." NY Post
"I've also learned the Magic rejected the Hawks' request to talk to Doc Rivers, who doesn't want to go anywhere, anyway. It doesn't get any better than coaching Tracy. Moreover, Rivers and Gabriel are getting along famously after a serrated few years." NY Post
"The agent for forward Juwan Howard said his client has not ruled out signing a new contract with the Denver Nuggets. But David Falk expects the Nuggets to make an offer on the first day of the free-agent signing period that is "commensurate" with his client's "value." "The onus is on Denver," Falk said Monday in a telephone interview. "Denver is the incumbent. They need to give us an offer (July 1) with what they feel he is worth, and we'll evaluate that offer against the other situations." Falk was quoted in Sunday's Los Angeles Times as saying it would be a "great situation" for Howard to sign with the Lakers. "Not the only situation, but a great one." Rocky Mountain News
"The Sonics will start their 2003-04 season in Japan, playing two games against the Los Angeles Clippers in Saitama, Japan, the team announced yesterday. The games will be played on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1 in the Saitama Super Arena, a multi-purpose arena on the northern fringe of Tokyo that can seat 20,000 for basketball games." Seattle Post Intelligencer
"Amid speculation about coach Larry Brown's future with the 76ers, team chairman Ed Snider issued a brief statement yesterday. "Larry is scheduled to leave for vacation on Tuesday, May 20, and will not return to Philadelphia until next week. We will get together upon his return to discuss his future plans," the statement read." Philadelphia Daily News
"Dave Cowens was in town yesterday but the Knicks would neither confirm nor deny that the former Celtic great was being interviewed for a job on Don Chaney's coaching staff. Cowens, a former teammate and a long-time friend of Chaney, fits one of the main requirements for the job: he has had head coaching experience, with Charlotte and Golden State." NY Daily News
"Aaron Williams left the team and the Detroit area yesterday due to a family emergency and may not be available for tonight's Game 2. "When somebody gives me the word that Train is either going to be here or not going to be here, then I'll let (you) know," Byron Scott told reporters. Should Williams, the backup center, not be available for tonight, Dikembe Mutombo likely would see significant playing time. Mutombo logged his seventh "Did Not Play - Coach's Decision" of the playoffs on Sunday in Game1." NY Daily News
"Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said his club would not retaliate in a ticket imbroglio that flared up just as his franchise was about to take a second bite off the ol' conference championship apple. Seems the mean ol' Spurs stiff-armed Mavericks fans who attempted to buy tickets for games down in Popovich Valley. A few Mavericks fans in Dallas bought SBC Center seats online via Ticketmaster. Later, their orders were canceled because the billing addresses were in Mav-friendly locales." Dallas Morning News
"Spurs forward Malik Rose suffered a stinger in his back late in Monday's playoff game and should play in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals, a Spurs team doctor said." San Antonio Express News
"Soon-to-be-former Gopher Rick Rickert had his first NBA workout Monday with the Golden State Warriors in Oakland, Calif. "I felt it went well, although I didn't shoot my best, in my opinion," Rickert said on his way back to a strength and conditioning camp he is attending in Bradenton, Fla. "They wanted to see how the full-court game was with the dribble; I did a lot of ball-handling." Rickert, who said there is no chance he'll return for his junior season at Minnesota, is 6 feet 10. He weighed 225 pounds Monday, 10 pounds more than he weighed his last day with the Gophers this spring." St Paul Pioneer Press
"The Cavs' biggest need is at point guard and there are several candidates that could fill that need, but there's one player that stands above them all, at least in ability. "Without question, T.J. Ford has NBA talent," said the Western Conference scout. "He's only 5-10 but he overcomes his lack of height with speed and quickness. He reminds me of Isiah Thomas. They have similar leadership qualities and Ford has that killer instinct." Cleveland Plain Dealer
"Jason Kidd dropped another hint Monday that he's leaning toward re-signing with the Nets after this season when, while answering questions about a weekend televised interview, he said, "To be realistic, I think I'll be in New Jersey." Bergen Record
