11월 11일이라고 하면 연인들을 위한 ‘빼빼로 데이’로만 여긴다. 하지만 이날이 그 초코 스틱의 달콤함에 가려진 의미심장한 날(meaningful and significant day)임을 아는 이는 많지 않다. 매년 이날이 되면 6·25 전쟁 참전 22국 195만명 중 살아있는 용사들이 세계 어느 곳에 있든 부산을 향해 거수 경례를 하고(raise their hands in salute) 1분간 묵념을 한다(pay a silent tribute). 이른바 ‘부산을 향하여(Turn Toward Busan)’라는 6·25 참전 유엔군 추모 행사(memorial ceremony) 날이다.

캐나다 참전 용사 빈센트 커트니(92)씨가 2007년 제안해 매년 11월 11일 오전 11시(한국 시각) 2311명의 전몰장병(fallen soldiers)이 안장돼 있는 부산 유엔기념공원을 향해 경례와 묵념을 하게 됐다. 2008년부터는 국가보훈처가 전몰장병들의 희생을 기리는 연례 행사로 열고(host an annual ceremony to commemorate the sacrifices of fallen troops) 있다. 11월 11일은 제1차 세계대전 종전일, 영연방의 1·2차 대전 전사자 추도일(Remembrance Day), 미국의 ‘재향 군인의 날’이기도 하다.

6·25 참전국은 22국으로, 미국·영국·캐나다 등 16국은 전투를 지원했고, 노르웨이·덴마크 등 6국은 의료를 지원했다. 전사자(war dead)·실종자(MIA·Missing In Action) 4만896명과 부상자·포로 등을 포함해 피해자 숫자가 15만5000여 명에 달했다.

부산 유엔기념공원은 전 세계에 하나밖에 없는 유엔군 묘지로, 11국 2311명의 유해가 안장돼 있으며(be laid to rest), 유엔 관할 지역으로 돼 있다. 한국 국회는 1955년 유엔군 희생에 보답하고자(in order to pay back their sacrifices) 현재의 토지를 기증했고, 같은 해 유엔은 이 묘지를 영구적으로 관리하기로 하는 총회 결의문을 채택했다(adopt a resolution).

올해 행사는 영국군 무명용사(unknown soldier) 3명의 유해 안장식(burial ceremony of remains)에 이어 유엔 전몰장병 추모 명비 앞 추도식(memorial ceremony) 순서로 진행된다. 이번에 안장되는 영국군 3명의 유해는 2016~2017년 파주 일대에서 발굴됐으나, 신원은 확인되지 않은 채 국적만 밝혀졌다. 안장식에 뿌려지는 흙으로는 지난 70년 동안 그들이 묻혀 있었던 파주의 흙이 사용된다.

추모식에선 전사자와 실종자 숫자를 상징하는 4만896송이의 달맞이꽃을 헌화한다(lay evening primroses for the deceased). 한국 들녘에서 자생하는 달맞이꽃의 꽃말(flower language)은 ‘기다림’으로, 가족 품으로 돌아오지 못한 모든 전몰장병에 대한 간절한 기다림을 표현한다.

올해 행사에는 ‘부산을 향하여’를 제창했던 빈센트 커트니씨도 참석해 전우에게 바치는(dedicate to his fellow soldiers in the war) 시 ‘소중한 청춘의 나날(Our Days of Precious Youth)’을 낭독한다. 커트니씨는 3년 전에 한 기고문에서 “우리는 언제까지나 부산을 향하여(turn toward Busan) 있을 테니 한국도 부디 우리에게 등을 돌리지(turn its back on us) 말아 달라”고 호소했었다.

UN Memorial Cemetery

When the Korean War happened on June 25, 1950, the International Society decided to send the United Nations Command to save Korea in crisis. A total of 1.95 million soldiers from 22 countries include United States, United Kingdom, and Turkey have supported the war, and has causes 40,896 of them were killed. Currently, it is said that 2,300 UN soldiers from 11 countries who gave their noble lives are sleeping in the UN Memorial Park in Busan. In the representative area, the flags of 22 countries involved in the Korean War and the flag of the United Nations are lifted for 365 days.

At the memorial hall built to commemorate the spirit of the UN forces soldiers, take a moment to reflect on the sacred meaning of life and death at the Dount Aqueduct named after the youngest soldier JP Daunt. Why don’t you take a moment to reflect on what makes life and death so precious? You can also read through the names engraved on the monument to appreciate all the 40,869 UN soldiers who were killed during the Korean War. It is also recommended that you plan your day to pay your tribute to those who were slept anonymously along the Unknown Soldiers’ Pathway with 11 stairs covered with water.

Pay a Silent Tribute toward Busan for a Minute on November 11th at 11:00

“I have been thinking about Korea every day for over 60 years. What to remember war is always a big pain for me. But it is better than being forgotten as it is.”
It is a quote from an interview with Vincent R. Courtenay, a Canadian Korean War veteran. He proposed a one-minute silent tribute to the U.N. Memorial Park in Busan at 11 p.m. on November 11 in Korean time, to appreciate those who sacrificed their lives in a strange land for the sake of the world’s peace and freedom. One minute of silence at 11:00 on November 11 has the number one in common, which signifies people around the world becoming one beyond the national boundaries by having the same goal.
