영어 교육자들이나 학습자들 모두 mean의 타동사적 쓰임에 대해서만 생각하기 때문에 생기는 오류이다.
아래와 같이 자동사적 쓰임에 대해서도 알아야 한다.
mean well
: to want to do good or helpful things 선하거나 도움이 되는 일을 하고 싶어 하다 : to have good intentions 좋은 의도를 가지다 ▪ He means well, but he's not really helping anyone.
1: a thing that is not known, named, or specified 알려지지 않거나 이름이 언급되지 않거나 명시되지 않은 것 <<어떤 것>> ▪Something came in the mail for you.▪ I thought I heard something outside.▪ He said something that really bothered me.▪ I started to say something but she interrupted me.▪ I have something to tell you.▪ There's something wrong with my car.▪Something is going on at the school, but I don't know what.▪“The job doesn't pay very well and the hours are long.”“I think you should look for something better.”▪ I don't know what she studies, but it has something to do with computers. informal — used to suggest another name, choice, etc., that is not specified 명시하지 않은 다른 이름, 선택 사항 등을 가리킬 때 씀 ▪ Are you crazy or something?▪ You can probably clean that stain with club soda or something. [=or something like that]▪ The man wearing the badge must be a guard or something.▪ Can I get you a glass of wine or something?
something else
informal: a person or thing that is special or impressive 특별하거나 인상적인 사람·것 ▪ That magician really is something else.▪ The Grand Canyon is something else, isn't it?
