잠언23장 말씀.

1. 네가 치리자와 함께 앉아 먹게 되거든 네 앞에 무엇이 있는지 부지런히 살펴보고

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:

2. 네가 만일 식욕에 빠진 자이거든 네 목에 칼을 둘지니라.

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [be] a man given to appetite.

3. 그의 맛있는 음식들은 속이는 것들이니 그것들을 바라지 말라.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful meat.

4. 부자가 되려고 수고하지 말고 네 자신의 지혜를 의지하지 말라.

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

5. 네가 존재하지 않는 것에 네 눈을 두려 하느냐? 재물은 반드시 스스로 날개를 내어

    독수리같이 하늘을 향해 날아가느니라.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. 

6. 너는 악한 눈을 가진 자의 빵을 먹지 말고 그의 맛있는 음식을 탐내지 말라.

Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

7. 그의 마음의 생각이 어떠함같이 그도 그러하니라. 그가 네게, 먹고 마시라, 할지라도

    그의 마음은 너와 함께하지 아니하느니라.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.

8. 네가 먹은 한 조각 빵도 네가 토하겠고 네 달콤한 말들도 잃으리라.

The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

9. 어리석은 자의 귀에 대고 말하지 말라. 그가 네 말들의 지혜를 업신여기리라.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10. 오래된 지계표를 옮기지 말고 아버지 없는 자의 밭에 들어가지 말라.

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: 

11. 그들의 구속자께서 강하시매 그분께서 너와 함께하며 그들의 사정을 변호하시리라.

For their redeemer [is] mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

12. 네 마음을 훈계에 기울이며 네 귀를 지식의 말씀들에 기울이라.

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13. 아이를 바로잡는 것을 금하지 말라. 네가 그를 회초리로 때릴지라도 그가 죽지 아니하리라.

Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

14. 너는 그를 회초리로 때려서 그의 혼을 지옥에서 건질지니라.

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

15. 내 아들아, 만일 네 마음이 지혜로우면 내 마음도 곧 내 마음도 기쁘겠고

My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. 

16. 참으로 네 입술이 바른 것들을 말하면 내 속 중심이 기뻐하리라.

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

17. 너는 마음에서 죄인들을 부러워하지 말며 종일토록 {주}를 두려워하라.

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

18. 분명히 끝이 있고 너의 기대하는 바가 끊어지지 아니하리로다.

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. 

19. 내 아들아, 너는 듣고 지혜로운 자가 되어 네 마음을 그 길로 인도할지니라.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

20. 술을 많이 먹는 자들 가운데 있지 말고 떠들며 고기를 먹는 자들 가운데 있지 말라.

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: 

21. 술주정뱅이나 음식을 탐하는 자는 가난하게 되며 잠자기를 좋아하는 자는 누더기를

      입으리로다.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.

22. 너를 낳은 네 아버지의 말에 귀를 기울이고 네 어머니가 늙을 때에 그녀를 업신여기지

      말라.

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23. 진리를 사되 팔지는 말며 지혜와 훈계와 명철도 그리할지니라.

Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24. 의로운 자의 아버지는 크게 기뻐할 것이요, 지혜로운 자식을 낳은 자는 그로 인하여 기쁨을

      얻으리니

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.

25. 네 아버지와 어머니가 즐거워하며 너를 낳은 여인이 기뻐하리로다.

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

26. 내 아들아, 네 마음을 내게 주며 네 눈이 내 길들을 지키게 할지니

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

27. 창녀는 깊은 도랑이요, 낯선 여자는 좁은 구덩이이니라.

For a whore [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.

28. 또 그녀가 먹이를 노리듯 숨어서 기다리고 사람들 가운데 범죄자가 늘어나게 하느니라.

She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men. 

29. 재난이 누구에게 있느냐? 슬픔이 누구에게 있느냐? 다툼이 누구에게 있느냐? 재잘거림이

      누구에게 있느냐? 까닭 없는 상처가 누구에게 있느냐? 붉은 눈이 누구에게 있느냐?

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30. 오랫동안 포도주에 머무는 자들에게 있고 섞은 포도주를 구하러 다니는 자들에게

       있느니라.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31. 너는 포도주가 붉거나 잔에서 제 빛깔을 내거나 스스로 똑바로 움직일 때에 그것을

      바라보지 말라.

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.

32. 그것이 끝내는 뱀같이 물고 독사같이 쏘나니

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. 

33. 네 눈은 낯선 여자들을 바라볼 것이요, 네 마음은 비뚤어진 일들을 말하리로다.

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34. 참으로 너는 바다 한가운데 누운 자 같으며 돛대 꼭대기에 누운 자 같으리니

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. 

35. 네가 말하기를, 그들이 나를 쳐도 나는 아프지 아니하고 그들이 나를 때려도 내가 그것을

      느끼지 못하였도다. 내가 어느 때나 깰까? 내가 또 여전히 그것을 구하리라, 하리라.

They have stricken me, [shalt thou say, and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
