카사블랑카〉(1942년)는 너무도 유명한 작품이라 웬만큼 영화에 관심 있는 사람이라면 거의 알 것이다.설사 영화를 직접 보지 못했다고 할지라도 스토리가 전개되는 지명만 소개하면 거의 다 제목을 알 만한 영화다 영화 속에도 등장하지만 카사블랑카는 아프리카의 북부 모로코의 대서양 연안에 있는 항구 도시 이름이다.

주인공은 당대 최고의 스타인 험프리 보가트가 릭 역으로 나오고, 잉그리드 버그만이 일자 역으로 나온다(초기에 릭의 역할은 나중에 미국 대통령이 된 로널드 레이건이 캐스팅될 뻔했지만 다행히 무산되고 험프리 보가트가 그 역을 맡았다고 한다).

 특히 이 작품은 험프리 보가트를 위한 영화라고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 그의 캐릭터가 릭을 통해 잘 드러나 있다.

 〈카사블랑카〉는 대중적인 영화면서도 〈바람과 함께 사라지다(Gone with the Wind)〉(1939년),〈시민 케인〉(1940년)과 함께 역사상 최고의 미국 영화 순위에서 항상 자리다툼을 해왔다.결과적으로는 명작이 되었지만 작품이 만들어지기까지는 상당히 우여곡절이 많았다.
