From Stephen Brown: Tango is a dance in which is it easy to become obsessed with perfection. The taste of heaven that is found within tango may encourage some to seek perfection. Others may bring their own perfectionism to tango. But we should never confuse heaven and perfection. They are very different. The path of perfectionism often leads away from heaven - as we find ourselves accompanied and driven forward by demons that become all too familiar. If we pursue perfection in our practice, we are likely developing the demons that seek to keep us from effective dancing.
In tango, heaven is found through the simple gift of grace. That comes from getting out on the dance floor with the person that happens to be right for the moment, opening one's heart and falling in love again. The times that this happens, one is just happy to be in the arms of another at the end of the tanda.

What does chan chan have to do with tango? They are how musicians and lovers of tango verbalize the last two notes of tango.
In musical terms, they are the dominant (fifth) and tonic (first) notes of the scale.
All orquesta tipicas perform tangos and valses that end with these two notes.
Musical compositions generally end on the tonic in the key they were written, and so it is with tango.
During one of my visits to Buenos Aires, I was told this story about a bandoneonist, which may or may not be true, but it is interesting.
He played for many years with the orquesta of Juan D’Arienzo.
Then he was hired by Osvaldo Pugliese. He went home frustrated every night after performing with the orquesta.
He had been used to playing the chan chan accented at the end of each tango with D’Arienzo.
That changed with the Pugliese style in which the last notes were soft.
So he played the chan chan repeatedly loud and accented until he got them out of his system.
Anyone who is interested in studying the music can find tango and vals scores on Todo Tango.
The lyrics end on the first beat of the last measure with the addition of the dominant and tonic.
That, along with a strong first and third beat of each measure, is what makes tango music unique.
I asked Daniel Borelli about the recordings where the last chan (the tonic)seems to be missing. He says it is there or the tango would not be complete — we just have to listen more carefully. The 78rpm recordings are the most compact and have it all. Omitting the tonic note at the end would be difficult for the musicians.

He will indicate to the lady what step he would like to do, when he wants to move, where he wants to go, how much and what power to put into the movement. The lady listens to what the man wants with her flexibility. Once she ahs read and understood what he wants, she does her 3 other jobs therby taking over the action of initiating. She uses her centers to move the man across the floor(sometimes called "inviting") in the step, timing, direction and power, as he indicated to her. She then sells the step, timing, direction and power to the judges and comes back to the neutral to get ready to start the procedure all over again. So, in short, the man initiates the first part, and the lady responds.
Then the lady initiates the last part, and the man responds. I sometimes say it is like the man has the first word and the lady has the last 2 words. Of course, a great lady always makes the man be the king of the partnership and she, of course, is the queen.
Benny Tolmeyer' guideline: 1. Don't expect anything fom your partner. If you get anything, take it as a bonus. 2. Don't wait for your partner to be perfect, as it may...or may never happen. 3. If you feel your partner you are not focused on the only person you can change;
namely yourself.
Body School 's focus on upper body connection in the ribcage, connections in arms and hands. The man's body indicates the timing, direction and power, and
the hands indicates the direction. When the actions of the body and hands are put together, the lady gets a clear indication of what step it is the man wants to dance. She now knows what he wants her to finish. The lady indicates the movement by moving her centers. The lady uses what is called "the 3 active centers" to move the man across the floor. She then uses her sternum in either a pendulum swing action or a metronome swing action to change
the angle of her topline. Finally she will bring back the sternum and centers to the starting position so she is ready to listen to what the man wants to do next.
