It has become something of an annual preseason tradition for SUPERSONICS.COM to pose ten questions about the upcoming Seattle SuperSonics season during preseason play. Last season, as the Sonics won 52 games and the Northwest Division, most of those questions were answered in the affirmative. Can the Sonics repeat that success? Only time will tell.

Can the Sonics cut down on their opponents' field-goal percentage?

 Since day one of training camp, new Sonics Coach Bob Weiss has preached defense. Specifically, he's wanted his team to lower the field-goal percentage it surrenders. Last year, opponents shot 45.9% against the Sonics, which was sixth-worst in the NBA. How important is opponent field-goal percentage? Last year, nine of the top ten teams in that category made the playoffs, while only three teams in the bottom ten - the Sonics, Sacramento and Washington - advanced to the postseason. Relying largely on veteran assistant coach Bob Hill and consultant Brendan Malone, Weiss wants the Sonics to improve their defensive rotations by helping a player that gets beat off the dribble, then helping the helper. The results in preseason have been mostly positive. The Sonics have held opponents to 42.1% shooting, which is good for sixth in the NBA. However, the high-scoring Phoenix Suns did shoot 48.8% against the Sonics even without MVP Steve Nash.

How will the Sonics respond to playing at a faster tempo?

While the national media portrayed the Sonics last season as a run-and-gun team like the Suns, savvy Seattle fans knew better. While both teams boasted efficient offenses, the Sonics actually played at one of the league's slowest paces based on possessions per game. Data on shot-clock usage provided by 82games.com backs up the dramatic difference between the two teams: 48% of Phoenix's shots came in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock, just 35% of the Sonics. This year, the Sonics hope to play at a similar pace to the Suns, if not quite that fast. Because the Sonics had too many shooters for opposing defenses to guard for 24 seconds and were the league's second-best offensive rebounding team, they were successful in a half-court setting last season. Weiss doesn't want that to change - he was behind the Sonics "get it early or get it late" philosophy, which encouraged testing the defense early in the clock but at the same time being patient and not forcing shots - but he would like the Sonics to be more potent in the open court. That's directly related to our next question,

Is Luke Ridnour ready to take the next step in his development?

A year ago, Ridnour was the only Sonics player to start all 82 games, but he didn't finish all of them, often giving way to backup Antonio Daniels. Daniels has departed for a possible starting spot in Washington, putting more responsibility on Ridnour's shoulders. So far during preseason and training camp, the third-year guard has looked more than equal to the task. He's averaging 10.8 points (third on the team), 4.0 rebounds (third) and 6.8 assists (first, tied for fourth league-wide) and has been more aggressive looking for his own shot. The biggest challenge for Ridnour is to improve his two-point percentage (41.3% a year ago), both by hitting more long jumpers (a shot he worked on all summer long) and finishing better at the basket. Ridnour's improvement has also forced the team to take advantage of his dynamic offensive skills on the break, which is where he truly thrived at Oregon. A fast break with Ridnour in the middle of the floor and Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis spotting up on the wings should prove difficult for opponents to contain.

리드나워의 발전으로 인해 소닉스는 루크가 오레건에서 보여주던 속공때의 다이나믹한 공격기술등을 이용할 수 있게될 것이다.  리드나워가 중앙에 있고 레이 앨런과 라샤드 루이스가 윙쪽에 있는 소닉스의 속공을 상대방이 막기 어려울 것이다.

Can Coach Weiss keep Nick Collison on the bench?

- 웨이스 감독은 닉 콜리슨을 벤치멤버로 쓸 것인가?

At Media Day, Weiss surprised reporters by sharing that he would prefer to keep second-year big man Collison out of the starting lineup this season (while still increasing his minutes to around 25 per game). However, Weiss pointed out he may have no choice but to start Collison as the season goes on if he plays as well as the Sonics hope and expect. The Sonics leading preseason rebounder (6.0 rpg), Collison has displayed more touch from the outside during the month of October, which should make him an even more dangerous offensive player. Collison is also the Sonics best post defender. According to a system created by Dan Rosenbaum and published on 82games.com that Weiss cited on Media Day, Collison projects to be the third-best defensive power forward in the league next season in terms of impact on the team's defense, trailing only All-Defense First Teamers Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett.

Is Johan Petro for real?

The buzz around Sonics HQ this week has almost entirely been focused on the Sonics first-round pick last June, French center Johan Petro. The raw 19-year-old entered camp with his plane ticket to Albuquerque and the Sonics NBA Development League affiliate penciled in, but Petro has tabled any such talk with his preseason performance. Petro has blocked a shot every 10 minutes (approximately the same rate as last year's league leader, Andrei Kirilenko), been active at both ends of the court and cut down dramatically on the fouls that plagued him during summer league. Petro started against Houston, played with the starters at the end of the game against the L.A. Clippers and could realistically be a part of the team's rotation in the regular season. What is the limit on what Petro can do?

"I don't know yet," said Weiss. "I didn't expect him to be where he is now, so I don't know what he's going to be like when we get to the season."

Will Rashard Lewis continue to play at an All-Star level?

- 라샤드 루이스는 계속해서 올스타 레벨을 유지할 것인가?

Last year, Lewis joined an elite group of NBA players by earning a trip to the All-Star Game. This year, Lewis faces the more challenging test of staying at that level. Including active players, nearly a third of All-Stars have been selected for the game only once. In Lewis' favor is his age (26) and his steady progression from second-round pick in 1998 to the All-Star Game. 2003-04 was the only season in Lewis' seven-year career where he failed to improve his scoring average, which hit 20.5 points per game last year. A fast pace could help Lewis improve that average, but more important will be Lewis hitting the boards more than he did last season, when his 5.5 rebounds per game were his lowest total as a starter. Lewis has had a promising preseason thus far, averaging 17.3 points - 27.1 per 40 minutes - on 57.4% shooting.

Can the Sonics core stay healthy?

The notion that the Sonics had good luck with injuries last season is probably an exaggeration. Starter Vitaly Potapenko and key reserve Ronald "Flip" Murray spent the first month and a half on the injured list, but the Sonics were deep enough to overcome their absences. Injuries to forwards Lewis and Vladimir Radmanovic proved more problematic late in the regular season and again in the Western Conference Semifinals against San Antonio. Though Lewis missed 11 games, the Sonics were fortunate to have their starting backcourt of Allen and Ridnour together 78 times last year (one of the four games Allen missed was the season finale, when he was resting up for the playoffs). While the Sonics have Murray and Damien Wilkins able to step in on the perimeter, a long-term injury to any of their perimeter starters or Radmanovic would make the Sonics fundamentally a different team, as they were late in the regular season as they battled injuries.

Can Danny Fortson stay on the floor?

Before Wednesday's preseason game, the first played this season by Fortson (bothered by turf toe), Weiss told reporters that he would like to see Fortson cut his rate of fouls per minute. So important for the Sonics the first three months of the season, Fortson averaged less than 10 minutes per game, largely because of fouls. His rate of fouls per minute led the NBA last season.

"One of his main focuses this preseason is to get the target off of his back," said Weiss. "He’s had a problem with flagrant fouls in the past. So we have been talking to him about the attitudes about him, changing the way he plays."

That's important to the Sonics, because while they can win even when referees neutralize Fortson, they are a different team with him going well. Fortson averaged 17.7 points and 13.3 rebounds per 40 minutes and led the NBA in True Shooting Percentage (68.2%).

Who backs up Luke Ridnour and Ray Allen?

While the Sonics entered camp with battles to start at both power forward and center, the most important position battle has probably been amongst several players for backup minutes at guard. While several forwards and centers will see action regardless of who starts, at guard players are fighting for a chance to see the court at all on a regular basis. Murray has gotten the first opportunity to step into the combo guard role played by Daniels a year ago and played well during training camp, but he has been pushed during preseason play by Rick Brunson and Wilkins, who has demonstrated his ability to play shooting guard for stretches. Less than two weeks before the Sonics open the season, this battle remains wide-open.

소닉스는 파워 포워드와 센터자리에서 선발경쟁을 하면서 캠프를 시작했다. 그러나 가장 중요한 포지션 경쟁은 아마도 백업가드 출전시간을 놓고 벌어지고 있을 것이다.

머레이는 지난 시즌 대니얼스가 수행했던 콤보가드의 역할을 맡을 기회를 처음으로 잡았고 트레이닝 캠프동안 좋은 모습을 보여줬다.그러나 릭 브런슨과 윌킨스의 프리시즌 활약에 의해 압박을 받고 있다. 윌킨스는 경기에서 슈팅가드로도 뛸 수 있는 능력을 증명하고 있다.

새로운 시즌이 2주도 채 남지 않았고 경쟁은 계속되고 있다.

Who's got next?

- 다음에 기회를 잡는 것은 누구인가?

Each of the last three seasons, a player invited to Sonics training camp has established themselves as a legitimate NBA player. Reggie Evans (2002), Richie Frahm (2003) and Wilkins (2004) all remain in the league and have played key roles for the Sonics. This year, it's guard Alex Scales and forward Noel Felix - the only two invitees remaining for the Sonics - who have impressed. Weiss has compared Scales to former New York Knicks guard John Starks (who likewise was undrafted and spent time in the CBA), and the Oregon product has demonstrated a rare combination of athleticism and shooting ability, averaging 6.5 points in the preseason - and a cool 20.8 per 40 minutes. Felix (3.3 ppg, 1.0 rpg) has not been as impressive statistically, but his athleticism has stood out in practice. The Sonics are using the 6-9 Felix at both forward positions, and he's shown solid range on his jumper, which would allow him to play on the perimeter. Because of the Sonics deep frontcourt, Felix would be less likely to contribute this season, but with Evans and Radmanovic both unrestricted free agents at year's end, Felix would be an intriguing project. With 15 other players in camp, it is possible that neither Felix nor Scales makes the squad, but Weiss expects both to be in the league in the near future.

3.3득점 1.0리바운드를 기록하고있는 필릭스는 스탯상으로는 인상적이지 않지만 그의 운동능력은 연습에서도 단연 눈에 띈다. 소닉스는 6-9의 필릭스를 스몰 포워드, 파워포워드 모두에서 이용하고 있고 필릭스는 상당한 슛거리의 점퍼 능력을 보여주고 있다. 소닉스의 두터운 프론트 코트때문에 필릭스는 이번 시즌 큰 기여를 할 수 없을 것이다. 그러나 올시즌을 끝으로 에반스와 라드마노비치가 비제한적 FA가 되면 필릭스는 흥미로운 프로젝트가 될 수 있다.

필릭스와 스케일 둘다 정규시즌 로스터에 남아있지 못할 가능성도 있다. 그러나 웨이스 감독은 두 선수가 가까운 미래에 리그에서 뛸 수 있으리라고 예상했다.
