I have always loved this endearing suite by Gabriel Grovlez, a composer about whom I could find little information and only some very sketchy photos. It seems clear that Grovlez was under the spell of Debussy, and I'm pretty sure he must have known that composer's Children's Corner, on which some of these items seem to be modeled. Nonetheless I do not find this derivative music. These pieces, often used in grade exams, are charming, heartfelt, and well-wrought.
Grovlez wrote a dozen or so other piano works but this is the only one you ever hear. I am intrigued by his Two Etudes of Transcendental Difficulty, but they look so absolutely fiendish that I won't even think of trying them.
I recorded L'Almanach aux Images on Jun 18, 2011. They're not perfect but I hope I have caught(some of) their charm.
