오전에 나왔던 기사에 대해 오해 비스므리한 것이 여러 분에게 생길 듯도 하여 전문을 여기에 올리겠습니다.

제가 해오던 대로 번역 게시판에 올렸다간 또 그냥 안 보실 분들도 많을 듯 하여 여기 게시판에 올릴게요.

일단 단도직입적으로 말하자면, 채드 포드가 이 글을 쓴 궁극적인 목적은, 레이커스가 이번 시즌 와장창 져서 픽이나 지키라는 것입니다.

아래 본문 다 읽어보시면 알겠지만 그 떠들석하게 만든 코비 트레이드 시나리오는 이론상으로나 가능하지 실현 가능성은 없다고 포드도 말해 놨구요.

드래프트 덕후 채드 포드의 성향을 알았더라면 이 컬럼을 그런 식으로 해석하지 않았을 텐데, ESPN 편집 데스크도 그렇고 링크 제목을 이상하게 달아 놨더군요.

탑 파이브 픽 얻는다는 것이 그리 또 생각만큼 쉬운 것도 아니라서 여기에 대한 논조에 동의하느냐 마느냐는 차치하고,

코비를 트레이드하라는 것은 결코 주제가 아님을 알려 드릴게요.

로스앤젤레스 레이커스의 우승 꿈은 2013 년 4 월 12 일, 코비 브라이언트의 아킬레스건이 파열된 그 때 무너졌었다.

제네럴 매니져 미치 컵책은 거의 옴짝달싹할 수 없는 곤경에 자신을 빠트리고 말았다.

이번 시즌에 개시되는 2 년 $48 million 연장을 브라이언트에게 내줬던 당시 컵책은 이번 여름 여러 슈퍼스타들을 데려올 수 있는 레이커스의 능력을 저당잡히게 만들었었다. 현재 NBA의 분위기에서는 엘리트 플레이어들이 본인들과 힘을 합칠 수 있는 스타들을 찾아다니는 경향이지만, 레이커스의 캡 스페이스 상당 부분을 브라이언트가 차지하는 바람에 이들은 두 명의 선수들에게 맥스 계약을 제시할 수 없었고, 그래서 카멜로 앤써니 같은 엘리트 프리 에이젼트들이 다른 곳을 찾아 나서는 듯해 보였었다.

또한 컵책은 2012 년 여름에 스티브 내쉬의 반대 급부로 선즈에게 두 장의 퍼스트 라운드 픽들을 내준 한편 드와이트 하워드 트레이드에선 올랜드 매직에게 2017 퍼스트 라운드 픽을 내주는 데 합의를 보며 레이커스의 미래를 저당잡히게 하기도 했었다. 저 당시 컵책은 레이커스가 아마도 아주 강하기 때문에 드래프트 픽들이 퍼스트 라운드 막판에 떨어지겠거니 생각했었다. 하지만, 내쉬와 브라이언트 둘 다 부상들로 인해 쓰러지고 하워드는 휴스턴 로켓츠로 떠나게 되면서, 레이커스의 원래 픽들은 지금 팔짝 뛸 만치 값어치가 있어 보인다.

이런 총체적 난관 와중에 그나마 희망의 빛줄기가 있다면 이번 시즌 랜들의 발전이 남아있었다.  NBA GM들과 스카우트들이 2013 년 7 월만 해도 우리의 Big Board에 두 번째로 가장 좋은 유망주로 놓고 시작했던 랜들이었다. 한낱 새내기였지만, 사이즈와 근력과 운동 능력을 타고 났고 성숙된 게임으로 인해 내외곽에 걸쳐 플레이할 수 있었다.

비록 켄터키 대학 일학년 시즌 동안 스카우트들이 기대했던 만큼의 지배적인 모습은 썩 아니었지만, 대학 시즌이 종료됐던 당시 탑 파이브 픽으로서 널리 여겨졌었다.

그런데 랜들이 고등학교 졸업반 때 당했던 발 부상이 제대로 치료되지 않아 여름 동안 두세 달은 빠지게 할 수술이 필요할 듯 하다는 것을 팀 의사들이 발견하면서 워크아웃 동안 랜들의 주가는 더욱더 미끄러졌었다. 저 진단에 레이커스는 망설이긴 했지만 칠순위로 그를 드래프트했다. 섬머 리그 동안 랜들은 그냥저냥에 그친 플레이를 햇지만, 견실한 프리시즌을 보내기도 했고 동시에 브라이언트와 제법 강한 연대감을 형성하며 레이커스가 랜들을 팀의 구심점이 될 미래의 스타로 삼도록 만들게 했다.

레이커스는 이 극도로 경쟁률이 심한 서부 컨퍼런스에서 플레이오프 진출에 애를 먹을 것이란 점을 알고 있었지만, 랜들이 발전하게 된다면 집안에서 키워낸 두 번째 스타가 되어 2015 년 여름에 정상급 프리 에이젼트를 유인할 수 있지 않을까 기대를 품었었다.

랜들이 수술에서 완벽히 회복할 것으로 예상되기는 하지만, 전체 시즌 동안 그의 발전은 정체될 것이고, 이번 여름 레이커스가 쓸 핵심 리크루팅 칩이 날아가게 될 것이다.

What should the Lakers do now?

컵책은 필라델피아 GM 샘 힌키의 플레이북 한 페이지를 뜯어와 자신의 팀이 이번 시즌 기절 상태에 빠지게 만들 수 있다. 레이커스는 이번 시즌 자신들의 퍼스트 라운드 픽을 선즈에게 줘야 하지만, 6~30 순위 사이에 떨어졌을 때에나 줘야 한다. 그러니까 다른 말로 하자면, 레이커스가 탑 파이브 픽 안으로 마감한다면, 픽을 지켜내게 되는 것이다.

애초에 레이커스는 이번 시즌 저보다는 훨씬 성적이 좋을 것으로 그림을 그렸었다. 설령 플레이오프는 카드에 들어있지 않더라도, 적어도 경쟁에 뛰어들 만큼은 기대했었다. 랜들이 없다고 해서 이들의 코트 위 흥망이 꼭 뒤바뀔 일은 없을 것이다. 어차피 스타터도 아니었고 레이커스는 시간을 소화할 수 있는 카를로스 부저와 에드 데이비스를 데리고 있기도 하다. 하지만 이제 레이커스는 지금 져 놓아서 이번 시즌 로터리 픽 자산을 쌓을 인센티브가 더욱더 강해졌다.

2015 NBA 드래프트는 도움이 될 만한 빅맨들로 가득하다. (각각 나의 Big Board에서 넘버 원 및 넘버 투로 매겨진) 듀크 대학의 잘릴 오카포와 캔터키 대학의 칼앤써니 타운스는 둘 다 레이커스에게 멋진 칩들이 될 수 있으며, 6-5 포인트 가드 엠마뉴엘 무디에이도 마찬가지다.

레이커스는 저들을 드래프트하여 다음 시즌 랜들과 함께 발전시키거나 (플레이어 옵션이 있는) 라존 론드와 고란 드라기치 또는 (연장에 사인하지 않고 제한적 프리 에이젼트가 된다는 가정에서) 리키 루비오를 끌어오는 데 사용하거나 취사선택할 수 있을 것이다. 아니면 픽을 (또는 랜들을) 트레이드에 사용하여 여름에 또 다른 베테랑을 얻어올 수도 있다. 어느 쪽이 됐든, 이들의 2015 퍼스트 라운드 픽은 현재 자산이 없는 팀에게 있어 중요한 자산이다.

제레미 린과 에드 데이비스를 트레이드로 보내는 것도 추락을 가속화시킬 수 있을 것이다. 물론, 문제는 브라이언트가 행복해하지 않을 것이란 점이다. 커리어의 마지막 몇년에 있는 그 어느 베테랑도, 특히 브라이언트라면 더욱더 밤마다 지도록 설계된 팀에서 플레이한다는 것에 행복해하지 않을 것이다. 이 방향에 브라이언트를 동참시킨다는 것은 매우 힘든 일이 될 것으로 보인다.

컵책에게 두 번째 선택지라면 이번 시즌 플레이오프 진출 가능성을  늘리는 것이다. 랜들이라는 희망의 빛줄기가 없긴 하지만, 레이커스는 팀이 서부의 플레이오프 자리를 겨루게 만들 트레이드들을 계속해 탐색할 수 있을 것이다.

그런데 여기에서도 다시, 레이커스가 탐나는 자산들을 많이 갖고 있지 못하다는 점이 난관이다. 이들이 갖고 있는 최고의 자산이라면 드래프트 픽들이지만, 2015 픽은 선즈에게 그리고 2017 픽은 매직에게 줘야 하기 때문에, 트레이드에 넣을 수 있는 가장 빠른 픽은 2021 퍼스트 라운더다. 이건 효과가 먹히지 않을 것이다.

최고의 희망사항이라면 내쉬의 만료 계약을 미끼로 사용하여 캡 구제를 원하는 팀에게 제시하여 베테랑을 받는 일이다. 이와 같은 교환으로는 뛰어난 선수를 얻지 못하겠지만, 내쉬가 시즌 전체를 빠진다는 것을 감안하면 어느정도는 업그레이드가 될 수 있다.

레이커스에게 있어 최후의 선택지라면 브라이언트에게 트레이드 불가 조항을 빼도록 하여 팀이 그를 트레이드할 수 있도록 설득하는 일이다. 다음 몇 달에 걸쳐 브라이언트가 자신이 건강함을 보여줄 수 있다면, 우승 경쟁에 뛰어든 몇몇 팀들이 흥미를 보일 수 있을 것이다.

뉴욕 닉스, 브루클린 넷츠, 댈러스 매버릭스 그리고 어쩌면 샬럿 밥캣츠까지 해서 우승 경쟁을 위해 브라이언트를 원할 것이라 생각해 볼 수 있는 팀들이다. 이들이라면 모두 과감히 위험을 무릅쓰고 돈을 쓸 것으로 보인다. 이들 모두 우승을 하기엔 한두 조각이 모자라 보이고, 여기에 캡 구제와 어린 선수들과 드래프트 픽이 조합되어 들어가면 성사될 것이다. 특히 뉴욕에서 필 잭슨과의 재결합이 가능성 있어 보이고, 레이커스 입장에서 이만 셤퍼트 및 팀 하더웨이 주니어 같은 어린 선수들에 2015 퍼스트 라운드 픽 그리고 아마레 스타더마이어나 안드레아 바르냐니의 것과 같은 거대 만료 샐러리를 남기는 트레이드라면 레이커스의 수요에 충당될 수 있을 것이다.

나는 저 세 시나리오 모두를 라이벌 GM 두 명에게 제시해 봤다. 그들은 첫 번째 시나리오가 장기적 이익을 챙겨 줄 가능성이 가장 큰 시나리오라는 것에 뜻을 모았다. 힌키와 샘 프레스티 둘 다가 리그에 가르쳐 준 적이 있듯이, 자산이 문제이며 픽을 지키는 길을 레이커스가 모색하는 것이 미래를 위한 최선의 희망이 될 것이다.

두 번째 시나리오는 레이커스에게 제한된 옵션들을 주게 된다. 그리고 세 번째 시나리오는, 이론상으로는 가능성이 있지만, 그렇게나 많은 레이커스의 충실한 신자들에겐 이단으로 여겨질 것이기 때문에 레이커스가 실행에 옮기리라 보기 힘들다.

한 GM은 ESPN에 이렇게 말했다. "지는 길을 찾는 것 말고는 미치에게 선택지가 많이 있다고 생각되지 않네요. 결국 약해질 길을 차아야 할 겁니다. 팀 전력이 픽도 잃고 그렇다고 플레이오프도 진출하지 못하는 상태에 빠지는 어정쩡한 상태에 있길 원할 사람은 없죠. 그들이 플레이오프에 진출할 만큼 좋아질 자산들을 갖고 있다고 나는 생각하지도 않으며 코비를 트레이드할 [거시기]도 있을 거라 생각하지 않아요. 역설적이긴 하지만, 지금 지는 것이 정말 더 좋아지게 되는 유일한 길로 보입니다."

The Los Angeles Lakers' title hopes snapped on April 12, 2013, when Kobe Bryant's Achilles tendon ruptured.

Eighteen months later, their future suffered the same fate when lottery pick Julius Randle's right tibia broke 13 minutes into his professional debut.

A day later, the Lakers find themselves on unfamiliar ground. Their title aspirations are gone and, for at least this season, so is their future. What happens next will likely determine the Lakers' success for the rest of the decade.

General manager Mitch Kupchak has painted himself into an almost impossible predicament.

He mortgaged the Lakers' ability to bring in multiple superstars this summer when he offered Bryant a two-year, $48.5 million extension that kicked in this year. In the current NBA culture, elite players are looking for multiple stars with whom they can team up, but with Bryant taking up a massive chunk of the Lakers' cap space, they couldn't offer max contracts to two players, and elite free agents such as Carmelo Anthony seemingly looked elsewhere.

Kupchak also mortgaged the Lakers' future by agreeing to send two first-round draft picks to the Suns in exchange for Steve Nash and a 2017 first-round pick to the Orlando Magic in the Dwight Howard trade in the summer of 2012. At the time, Kupchak thought the Lakers would be so good the draft picks would fall into the late first round. However, after Nash and Bryant both went down with injuries and Howard bolted for the Houston Rockets, the picks the Lakers owe now look incredibly valuable.

The silver lining in all of this was supposed to be the development of Randle this season. NBA GMs and scouts on our Big Board initially ranked Randle as the second-best prospect in the draft in July of 2013. As a mere freshman, he was blessed with size, strength, athleticism and a mature game that allowed him to play inside and out.

Though he wasn't quite as dominant as scouts expected during his freshman season at Kentucky, he largely was regarded as a top-five pick when the college season ended.

Randle's stock slipped further during workouts when team doctors discovered Randle's foot injury from his senior year of high school had healed improperly and would likely require surgery that would keep him out two to three months over the summer. The Lakers balked at the diagnosis and drafted him with the seventh pick. Randle played just so-so during Summer League, but a solid preseason, along with some strong bonding with Bryant, convinced Lakers brass Randle was a future star around whom the team could build.

The Lakers knew that they'd struggle to make the playoffs in the hyper-competitive Western Conference, but they felt the development of Randle would give them a homegrown second star to perhaps lure a top free agent in the summer of 2015.

While Randle is expected to fully recover from the surgery, his development will be stalled for the entire season, taking away a key recruiting chip for the Lakers this summer.

What should the Lakers do now?

Kupchak could take a page out of Philadelphia GM Sam Hinkie's playbook and let his team slide into oblivion this season. The Lakers owe the Suns their first-round pick this season, but only if it falls between 6 and 30. In other words, if the Lakers end up with a top-five pick, they keep it.

The Lakers had planned on being much better than that this season. Even if the playoffs weren't in the cards, they expected to at least compete for them. Randle's absence won't necessarily change their immediate fortunes on the court. He wasn't starting, and the Lakers still haveCarlos Boozer and Ed Davis, who can handle the minutes. But the Lakers have even more incentive to lose now and pick up that lottery pick asset this season.

The 2015 NBA draft is loaded with bigs who could help. Duke's Jahlil Okafor and Kentucky's Karl-Anthony Towns (ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on my Big Board respectively) could both be terrific chips for the Lakers, as could 6-foot-5 point guardEmmanuel Mudiay.

They could either draft them and develop them alongside Randle next season and use the two to lure a veteran like Rajon Rondo, Goran Dragic (who has a player option) or Ricky Rubio (assuming he doesn't sign an extension and becomes a restricted free agent). Or they could use their pick (or Randle) in a trade for another veteran over the summer. Either way, their 2015 first-round pick is an important asset for a team that currently lacks them.

Trading away Jeremy Lin and Ed Davis could help hasten the fall. The problem, of course, is that Bryant won't be happy. No veteran in the last few years of his career, especially Bryant, is going to be happy playing on a team that is set up to lose every night. Selling Bryant on this direction seems like a very hard task.

A second option for Kupchak is to double down on making the playoffs this season. Without the silver lining of Randle, the Lakers could continue to pursue trades that allow the team to compete for a playoff spot in the West.

Again, the challenge is the Lakers don't have many coveted assets. The best thing they have going for them is their draft picks, but since they owe the Suns their 2015 pick and the Magic their 2017 pick, the earliest pick they could trade is a first-rounder in 2021. That's not going to work.

Their best hope here is to use Nash's expiring contract as bait to offer a team cap relief in return for a veteran. They won't get a great player out of a transaction like that, but given that Nash is out the entire season, they could upgrade somewhere.

The final option is for the Lakers to convince Bryant to waive his no-trade clause and let the team trade him. If Bryant can show over the next month or so that he's healthy, several teams that are trying to compete for titles could show interest.

Could Kobe end up with Melo in N.Y.?

The New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Dallas Mavericks and possibly Charlotte Hornetsare all teams that could conceivably want Bryant for a title run. None of them appear to shy away from taking bold risks and spending the money to do so. All of them appear to be a piece or two away from a title, and a combination of cap relief, young players and draft picks could get it done. A reunion with Phil Jackson in New York would be especially possible, and a trade that netted the Lakers young players likeIman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. along with a 2015 first-round pick and a big expiring salary like Amar'e Stoudemire's or Andrea Bargnani's could meet the Lakers' needs.

I posed all three scenarios to a couple of rival GMs. They agreed that the first one is the one most likely to pay long-term dividends. As both Hinkie and Sam Presti have taught the league, assets matter and the Lakers finding a way to keep that pick might be the best hope they have for the future.

The second scenario offers limited options for the Lakers. The third scenario, while technically plausible, is considered heretical by so many Lakers faithful it's hard to see the Lakers pulling the trigger.

"I don't think Mitch has much choice but to find ways to lose," one GM told ESPN. "They're going to be bad anyway. You don't want to be just good enough that you lose the pick and still miss the playoffs. I don't think they have the assets to get good enough to make the playoffs and I don't think they have the [expletive] to trade Kobe. It's paradoxical, but right now losing seems like the only way to really get better."

씩서스 같은 운영도 쉬운게 아닙니다. 2-3 길게는 그 이상 바라보고 운영하는 내용이라 프로젝트 타깃 설정이 분명해야죠. 그냥 씩서스가 단순히 탱킹을 위한 로스터 운영만 하는게 아닙니다. 그 속에는 굉장히 복잡하고 치밀한 계산이 포함돼 있거든요. 그냥 로터리픽 한장만 얻는 것으로 필리의 운영방식을 왜곡해서는 안됩니다. 쉴새없이 에쎗 확보하고 비보장 계약자들 슬롯 만들면서 실험하고 이런 미약한 탤런트를 디벨럽 시켜야 하는 출전시간도 줘야합니다.
