[03 Telephone Banking]

** toll-free : in long distance PSTN(publick switched telephone network) communication, and originated connection to a number translation that allows the receiving party to receive and pay for that

** wire : if you wire an amount of money to a person or place, you tell a bank to send it to the person or place using a telegram message.

            (ex) I'm wiring you some money.

            (idiom)down to the wire(마지막까지) : to the very last moment or the very end

** in a jiffy : If you say that you will do something in a jiffy, you mean that you will do it very quickly or very soon.

    jiffy n. 순간, 잠깐

   (ex) Wait a jiffy. 잠깐 기다려.

          I'll be ready in a jiffy. 금방 준비될 거야.

** stiff 당치 않은, (조건, 벌 따위가)심한, 엄한

         Stiff behaviour is rather formal and not very friendly or relaxed.

   (ex) I received a substantially stiffer penalty than my brother.

** umpteenth  / mpti n/ : lost count of how many(= countless)

    (ex) I just saw Federer win again for the umpteenth time.

** edge에 관한 표현

   on edge = nervous, acutely sensitive, tense 초조하여, 불안하여

   on the edge of : ~의 가장자리에; 막~ 하려는 찰나에(be about to)

   on the edge of one's seat(or chair) : held by suspense 긴장시키다.

    If you say that someone is on the edge of their seat or chair, you mean that they are very interested in what is happening or what is going to happen.

** have a fit = go mad 노발대발 하다.

   If you say that someone will have a fit when they hear about something, you mean that they will be very angry or shocked.

** pot 항아리, 단지, (어린이용)변기, 요강

   go to pot : to become ruined, deteriorate, with no one to care for it  파멸하다. 부서지다

   (proverb) The pot calls the kettle black. 똥 묻은 개가 겨 묻은 개 나무란다.

** endorse 1. 배서하다. 2. 보증하다. 3. (상품을)추천하다.(to support financially as advertisement)

   If you endorse a product or company, you appear in advertisements for it.

** graphite  그래파이트, 석묵, 흑연

   (ex) McEnroe was one of the first to endorse a graphite racket. 맥켄로는 흑연 라켓을 추천한 최초의 선수 중의 하나였다.

** at best : under the most favorable circumstances 기껏해야, 잘해야

    (ex) It was a bland meal at best. 기껏해야 평범한 식사였어.

** indigenous :  native, originating in and characteristic of a particular region or country. 토착의

** hit the nail on the head : If you say that someone has hit the nail on the head, you think they are exactly right about something.

                                     정확히 알아맞히다. = be spot on

** stand up 1. 일어서다 2. 지탱하다, 지속하다, 견디다, 신뢰받다 3. 반항하다, 대항하다

  ⒜ stand up ① to come to or reamin in s standing position

                       to stand up when being introduce.

                    ②to remain strong, convincing, or durable

                      the case will never stand up in court.

                      wool stands up better than silk.

                    ③ slang. to fail to keep an appointment with(someone, esp. a sweetheart or date)

                       (ex) we were to have had dinner together yesterday evening, but he stood me up.

 ⒝ stand up for ① to defend the cause of, support

                        (ex)They stood up for what they believed to be right.

                      ② to serve a bridegroom or bride

 ** astouding = amazing, astonishing

** bent out of shape : distored or misleading as a statistic 일그러진, 통계적으로 잘못된

   ( I got bent out of shape 나 진짜 화나!!)

** uncanny : If you describe something as uncanny, you mean that it is strange and difficult to explain.

    (ex) Jason has an uncanny ability to predict sports results.

 ** hazard a guess  = would you like to guess?

스터디 하는 동안 열심히 받아 적었어야 했는데ㅡ

(아..  너무 늦어 생각이 안나버린거죠~^^;;)

우앙~ 깔끔한 정리 감사드립니다~!! ^^ 그리고 우리 스터디 중에 해석이 안 되서 고민했던 p.45의 마지막 문장요, "If you want something, you are going to have to stand up for yourself."에 관해서 알아봤는데, something 다음에 comma가 들어가야 하고, 해석은 "네가 뭔가를 하길 원한다면, 너는 혼자서(네 스스로) 맞서야 해." 라고 하네요~ 그럼, 토욜에 뵈요!
