The Avatamsaka Sutra, The Ten Abodes (십주품 11-3)

[眞如華]

     11-3.

     何以故      欲令增進      於三世中      心得平等      有所聞法      卽自開解      不由他敎故

     무슨 까닭인가. 그로 하여금 더욱 증진하여 세 세상 가운데서 마음을 평등하게 하려 함이며, 법을 듣고는 스스로 이해하고 다른 이의 가르침을 말미암지 않게 하려는 연고이니라.

What is the reason? To cause progress in equanimity in respect to past, present, and future, and to be able to understand any teaching heard without relying on the instruction of another.

What is the reason; 무슨 까닭인가

progress; 그로 하여금 더욱 증진하여

in respect to past, present, and future

; 세 세상 가운데서

in equanimity; 마음을 평등하게 하려 함이며

any teaching heard; 법을 듣고는

and to be able to understand

; 스스로 이해하고

without relying on; 말미암지 않게 하려는

the instruction of another

; 다른 이의 가르침을

To cause; 연고이니라
