26일 밤 베트남 수도 하노이를 비롯해 호찌민, 다낭, 하이퐁 등 주요 도시가 축제 물결로 뒤덮였다. 김상식 감독이 이끄는 베트남 축구 대표팀이 ‘동남아 월드컵’으로 불리는 아세안 챔피언십(현대컵) 결승에서 라이벌 태국을 꺾고 대회 2연패(連覇)이자 통산 네 번째 우승을 달성했기 때문이다.

시민들은 폭죽을 터뜨리며 “비엣남 보 딕(베트남 만세)”을 연호했다. 베트남 국기와 태극기를 함께 든 이들에게 이유를 묻자 대답은 한결같았다. “박항서·김상식 감독 덕분에 베트남이 축구 강국이 됐다. 한국 덕분이다.” 오토바이 행렬은 경적을 울리며 새벽까지 하노이 시내를 가로질렀다.
