1. 사무엘이 늙어서 자기 아들들을 이스라엘의 재판관으로 삼으니

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2. 이제 그의 맏아들의 이름은 요엘이요, 둘째 아들의 이름은 아비야더라. 그들이 브엘세바에서 재판관이 되니라.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: [they were] judges in Beersheba.

3. 그의 아들들이 그의 길들로 걷지 아니하고 옆으로 돌이켜 이익을 추구하며 뇌물을 취하고 재판을 굽게 하니라.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

4. 이에 이스라엘의 모든 장로들이 함께 모여 라마에 있던 사무엘에게 나아가

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

5. 그에게 이르되, 보소서, 당신은 늙고 당신의 아들들은 당신의 길들로 걷지 아니하니 모든 민족들과 같이 이제

    우리에게 왕을 세워 우리를 재판하게 하소서, 하니라.

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

6. 그러나 그들이 이르기를, 우리에게 왕을 주어 우리를 재판하게 하소서, 하였을 때에 그 일을 사무엘이 기뻐하지

    아니하여 {주}께 기도하매

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 

7. {주}께서 사무엘에게 이르시되, 백성이 네게 말한 모든 것에서 그들의 음성에 귀를 기울이라. 그들이 너를 버리지

    아니하고 나를 버려서 내가 자기들을 통치하지 못하게 하려 하였느니라.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

8. 내가 그들을 이집트에서 데리고 올라온 날부터 이 날까지 그들이 행한 모든 행위에 따라 그들이 그런 일들로 나를

    저버리고 다른 신들을 섬긴 것 같이 네게도 그리하는도다.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

9.그러므로 이제 그들의 음성에 귀를 기울이되 그들에게 위엄 있게 단언하고 그들을 통치할 왕에 관한 규범을 그들에게

   보이라, 하시니라.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. 

10. 사무엘이 자기에게 왕을 요구한 백성에게 {주}의 모든 말씀을 고하여

And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

11. 이르되, 너희를 통치할 왕에 관한 규범이 이러하리라. 그가 너희 아들들을 취하여 그들을 자기와 자기의 병거들을

      위해 지정하고 또 자기의 기병으로 삼으리니 몇 사람은 그의 병거들 앞에서 달려가리라.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint [them] for himself, for his chariots, and [to be] his horsemen; and [some] shall run before his chariots.

12. 또 그가 자기를 위해 천인 대장들과 오십인 대장들을 지정하고 그들을 세워 자기 땅을 갈게 하며 자기의 수확물을

      거두게 하고 자기의 전쟁 무기와 병거의 기구를 만들게 하리라.

And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and [will set them] to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

13. 또 그가 너희 딸들을 취하여 과자 만드는 자와 요리하는 자와 빵 굽는 자로 삼으리라.

And he will take your daughters [to be] confectionaries, and [to be] cooks, and [to be] bakers.

14. 또 그가 너희 밭과 포도원과 올리브 밭을 취하되 그 중에 가장 좋은 것을 취하여 자기 신하들에게 주며

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, [even] the best [of them], and give [them] to his servants.

15. 또 너희 씨와 포도원의 십분의 일을 취하여 자기 관리들과 신하들에게 주고

And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. 

16. 또 너희 남종과 여종과 가장 아름다운 청년과 나귀들을 취하여 자기 일을 하게 하며

And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put [them] to his work.

17. 너희 양의 십분의 일을 취하리니 너희가 그의 종이 되리라.

He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

18. 그 날에 너희가 택한 너희 왕으로 인하여 너희가 부르짖을 터이나 {주}께서 그 날에 너희 말을 듣지 아니하시리라,

      하니라.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

19. 그럼에도 불구하고 백성이 사무엘의 목소리에 순종하기를 거부하여 이르되, 아니로소이다. 우리에게 우리를

      다스릴 왕이 있어야 하리니

Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

20. 그리하여야 우리도 모든 민족들과 같이 되어 우리 왕이 우리를 재판하며 우리 앞에 나가서 우리의 싸움을

      싸우리이다, 하니라.

That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21. 사무엘이 백성의 모든 말을 듣고 {주}의 귀에 그것들을 다시 고하매

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

22. {주}께서 사무엘에게 이르시되, 그들의 음성에 귀를 기울여 그들에게 왕을 세우라, 하시니 사무엘이 이스라엘

      사람들에게 이르되, 너희는 각각 자기 도시로 가라, 하니라.

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
