1827년 3월29일 樂聖 베토벤의 영결식이 있던 날

음악에 다소나마 흥미를 갖으신 분은 아마도 樂聖 베토벤에 대하여 잘 알고 계시겠

지만 나 역시 음악에 대하여는 아무것도 아는 것이 없으면서 작은 흥미는 갖고 있어

베토벤이 악성으로 높이 추앙받는 다는 사실만은 알고 있습니다.

지금부터 186년전인 1827년 3월29일이 베토벤의 영결식이 비엔나에서 2만시민이

애도 하는 가운데 거행되었다고 하는데 3월29일을 맞아 불후의 명곡을 인류에게

선사한 그분을 추모하며 대표적인 곡 몇곡을 들어보고 또한 그날 영결식에서 헌사된

弔辭가 명문 이라고 하기에 여기에 잠간 소개 하고자 합니다.

We who stand here at the grave of the deceased are in a sense the

representatives of an entire nation, the whole German people, come to

mourn the passing of one celebrated half of that which remained to us

from the vanished brilliance of the fatherland.

The hero of poetry in the German language and tongue still lives --

and long  may he live. But the last master of resounding song,

the gracious mouth by which music spoke, the man who inherited and

increased the immortal fame of Handel and Bach, of Haydn and Mozart,

has ceased to be; and we stand weeping over the broken strings

of an instrument now stilled.

 Let me call him that! For he was an artist, and what he was, he was only

through art. The thorns of life has wounded him deeply, and as the

shipwrecked man clutches the saving shore, he flew to your arms,

oh wondrous sister of the good and true, comforter in affliction,

the art that comes from on high! 

He held fast to you, and even when the gate through which you had entered

was shut, you spoke through a deafened ear to him who could no longer

discern you; and he carried you image in his heart, and when he died it still

lay on his breast.

He was an artist, and who shall stand beside him? As the behemouth sweeps

through the seas, he swept across the boundaries of his art.

From the cooing of the dove to the thunder's roll, from the subtlest

interweaving of wilful artifices to that awesome point at which the fabric

presses over into the lawlessness of clashing natural forces --

he traversed all,he comprehended everything. He who follows him cannot

continue;he must begin anew, for this predecessor ended where art ends.

Adelaide and Leonore! Commemorations of the heroes of Vittoria and

humble tones of the Mass!

Offspring of three and four-part voices. Resounding symphony,

"Freude, schöner Götterfunken", the swan song. Muses of song and

of strings, gather at his grave and strew it with laurel!

He was an artist, but also a man in every sense, in the highest sense.

Because he shut himself off from the world, they called him hostile;

and callous, because he shunned feelings. Oh, he who knows he is

hardened does not flee!

Excess of feeling avoids feelings. He fled the world because he did not find,

in the whole compass of his loving nature, a weapon with which to resist it.

He withdrew from his fellow men after he had given them everything and

had received nothing in return. He remained alone because he found

no second self.

But until his death he preserved a human heart for all men, a father's

heart for this own people, the whole world.

Thus he was, thus he died, thus he will live for all time!

And you who have followed his escort to this place, hold you sorrow in sway.

You have not lost him but won him. No living man enters the halls of

immortality. The body must die before the gates are opened. He whom you

mourn is now among the greatest men of all time, unassailable forever.

Return to you homes, then, distressed but composed.

And whenever, during your lives, the power of his work overwhelms

you like a coming storm; when your rapture ours out in the midst of

a generation yet unborn; then remember this hour and think;

we were there when they buried him, and when he died, we wept.

대표 이며, 조국의 사라지는 영광으로부터 우리에게 남아있는 한 유명한 분의

서거를 그분 영예의 반이라도 송축코자 하는 모임에 애도하고자 왔습니다.

독일어 문학,시의 영웅은 여전히 살아있습니다. 그리고 오랫동안, 그는 살아있을

것입니다.

하지만 굉장한 음악의 마지막 거장, 음악을 말하는 이들에 의해 우아하게 표현되는

그는, 헨델과 바흐, 하이든과 모차르트의 불멸의 명성을 물려받고, 그것을

발전시켰지만 이제 떠나갔습니다.

그리고 우리는, 이제는 조용해진 악기의 끊어진 현 위로 눈물 흘리며 서있습니다.

저는 그를 이렇게 부르고 싶습니다! 그는 예술가였고, 또한 늘 그래왔기에,

그는 오직 예술을 통해서만 존재하였습니다. 삶의 가시가 그에게 깊은 상처를

주었고,그 파괴된 사나이가 난간을 움켜쥘 때, 그는 여러분 품에 날아왔습니다.

오, 경이로운 善과 眞實로 돌보아 주던 분이여, 고통속에서도 위안을 주던 분이여,

하늘에서 온 예술이여!

그는 여러분과 교분을 지켰습니다. 그리고 여러분이 들어갔던 그 문이 닫혔을 때도,

더이상 당신을 알아보지 못하는 그의 들리지 않는 귀를 통해 여러분은 말했습니다.

그리고 그는 여러분을 그의 가슴 속 깊은 곳으로 데려갔고, 그가 죽었을 때,

그것은 여전히 그의 가슴 위에 놓여있었습니다.

그는 예술가였습니다. 누가 그와 견줄 수 있겠습니까? 베헤못(괴물)이 바다를

휩쓸 듯,그는 그의 예술의 경계를 휩쓸어버렸습니다.

천둥소리를 향한 비둘기의 옹알이로부터,악의적인 책략의 미묘한 조화로부터,

그것들이 충돌하는 자연적인 힘의 무법으로 눌러버린 어마어마한 지점까지 그는

모든 것을 가로질렀고, 그는 모든 것을 포용했습니다.

그를 따라갔던 사람은 이제 계속 할 수 없습니다. 그는 새로 시작해야 합니다.

예술이 끝나는 곳에서 이 선구자는 끝을 맞았기 때문입니다.

아델레이드와 레오노르! 비토리아 전투의 영웅들의 기념물과도 같고 미사곡과도

같은 겸손한 음조여!

3,4부 목소리의 성과(成果). 어마어마한 교향곡, “기쁨이여, 아름다운 신의

불꽃이여! (9번 교향곡 ‘합창’)”, 그 백조의 노래같은! .노래와 현의 여신들이

그의 무덤에 모여서 월계수 잎과 함께 그것을 흩뿌립니다.

그는 예술가였습니다. 하지만 또한 그는 모든 의미에서, 최고의 한 인간이었습니다.

그는 세상으로부터 그를 닫아버렸기 때문에, 사람들은 그를 적의적이라고 했습니다.

또한 그는 감정을 닫았기 때문에, 냉담하다고도 했습니다. 오, 그러나 그는 

세상사람들이 그가 냉담하다고 여기는 것을 알았어도 그는 도망치지 않았습니다.

너무 과한 감정은 감정을 피합니다. 그는 그것을 함께 저지할 무기를, 그가 사랑하는

이 나라 어디에서도 찾지 못했기 때문에, 이 세상으로부터 도망쳤습니다.

그가 그의 친구들 에게 모든 것을 주었지만, 아무것도 돌려받지 못한 후, 그는 그들

뒤로 물러났습니다.

그는 그의 가장 친한 친구를 찾지 못했기 때문에 홀로 남았습니다. 하지만

그가 죽을 때 까지 그는 모든 사람들에게 인간적인 마음을 간직했습니다.

죽어야 합니다. 당신이 애도하는 그는 이제 지금 까지 중 가장 훌륭한 사람 중

하나이고, 영원히 그럴 것입니다.

여러분들이 집으로 돌아가신 후, 괴로웁더라도 그러나 담담해 하십시오.

그리고 여러분이 살아있는 동안 언제든지 그의 업적의 위력은 태풍이 달려오듯

당신을 압도할 것입니다.

여러분의 황홀함이 아직 태어나지 않은 세대 한가운데서 잊혀질 때, 그때는

이 시간을 기억하고 생각해 주십시오. 그가 묻힐 때, 우리는 여기 있었고, 

그가 죽었을 때, 우리가 눈물 흘렸다는 것을.
