1. Overview
□ Local Production of Gloves
○ Currently, there are about 45 registered enterprises and many private family business of labour safety manufacturers in Vietnam. Most of the local producers just manufacture cotton gloves that require simple technology and easily find the supply of cotton. The common made-in-Vietnam gloves are woolen ones, rubber and cotton ones. According to KOTRA’s interview with some manufacturers, the actual cost of importing materials to produce gloves which requires complex production technology such as plastic coating gloves is calculated much higher than the price of importing finished gloves from foreign suppliers, particularly from the Chinese and Taiwan ones.
○ Vietnam’s market is pretty occupied with many different brand names of gloves such as: TopGove(Malaysia), Blue Eagle(Taiwan), Koviet(Korea), Gaby(Vietnam), Nacol(Vietnam), King(unidentified), Tiger(unidentified), White Gloves(unidentified), Protector (unidentified), and so on. From the interview with several buyer’s, the foreign brand name occupied about 60% of the market share, and local made gloves constitute roughly 40% of the domestic market. The market size of the gloves production in the South is much larger (about ten times) than that in the North of Vietnam. Almost all the giant companies of labor safety products and equipments are located in Ho Chi Minh City and its neighboring provinces. There are currently two big foreign joint venture players in Vietnam’s glove market, which are Kachiboshi(Japan), and Supermax Corporation(Malaysia).

□ Marketability
○ Korean suppliers, thanks to its reputation in Vietnam for high quality products, advanced technologies and professionalism, possess good potential to increase their market share in Vietnam - Opportunities: As mentioned above, Vietnamese manufacturers focus more on producing the normal woolen and rubber gloves rather than multifunctional gloves to protect from heat, cold or electricity. Driven by the increasing demand for high quality safe labor products supporting the nationwide production expansion across all heavy industries, both Vietnamese and foreign producers in Vietnam has to import more industrial gloves of high quality. This presents a great opportunities Korean suppliers of industrial gloves and labour protection products in general. Additionally, Korean products often enjoy the reputation of high quality in Vietnam. This prestigious origin mark will be a great support to promote Korean products in Vietnam and easier searching for the partnership with a strategic agent here. - Challenges: It is very hard for a new enterprise to compensate for the sparing domestic gloves because Vietnam’s market is now fully occupied with many imported gloves mainly from China and Taiwan, and with the ones produced by the foreign joint ventures in Vietnam. These products are of good quality and reasonable price, in accordance with many kinds of users.

3. Distribution Structure
○ Normally, such imported products as industrial working gloves can be distributed in three main following channels. First, they are imported directly by end-users such as manufactures or factories. Secondly, these factories and manufacturers can contact Vietnam-based representatives of foreign labor protection product manufacturers in Vietnam to purchase industrial gloves. Finally, foreign interprises can co-operate with its authorized sales agents, or partners or local trading company to promote and distribute the labor gloves to the end-users.
○ Depending on the technical background and the financial resource status, as well as the capacity of the end-users, they will choose the way to buy labour protection products. If the end-user need a large volume of these products such as industrial gloves (for example: cars or motorbikes producers) and are confident in the complex and long customs procedure, they can import directly from the manufacturers. Conversely, if the end-users do not understand well about these products, they tend to prefer buying from the local companies to receive advice, and avoid involving in complex and long customs procedures, and save the transportation cost and time.
○ Normally, the third method of distributing the product to the end-users through the local traders is the most common and effective way in Vietnam to utilize the agent’s connection and network with customers as well as provide customers with more responsive and practical technical support and after-sales services

Source: www.trademap.org & KOTRA Hanoi Surveys
○ According to the chart, the total import value of Vietnam had increased gradually from 2007 at an average rate of over 25% per annum and peaked at the volume of more than US$ 46 million in 2010, then fell down by 18% in 2011, at a volume of about US$ 38,3 million. This trend can be explained by the impact of the economic crisis as many factories had closed, therefore the demand for labor protection equipment, especially imported equipment declined.
○ Currently, Vietnamese economy is slowly recovering, the government is focusing on supporting for manufacturing businesses hence labor safety equipment demand can be expected to be stable and increase slightly.

○ It can be seen from the pie chart that according to the import value, almost imported labour protection products in Vietnamese market are from China, accounting for 93.2%. Korea and Malaysia provide 2.4% of total products exported to Vietnam each country. As many other commodities, the biggest advantage of Chinese products is diversity and low price. To compete with this rival, Korean manufactures need to focus on high quality products with special functions.
