Monsieur Bark and Monsieur Linh eat and drink. Monsieur Linh samples dishes he never knew existed. He is not familiar with any of them, but everything is very good. He drinks small sips of the wine that the fat man pours for him. His head feels a little hot. The tables sway. He laughs. Occasionally, he tries to make his child try one of the dishes, but she is not very hungry. She is always well behaved, but she is not swallowing her food. Monsieur Bark watches what he does with a smile. The other guests turn around sometimes and stare at them. Monsieur Bark could not care less.

After the dessert course, once the waiter has cleared the table, the fat man bends over and picks up a bag that he had placed beside him earlier when he had sat down, and he brings out a pretty packet which he hands to Monsieur Linh.
“A present!” he says. And since the old man hesitates, he continues: “Yes, go on, it’s a present for you, Monsieur Tao-laï. Take it, please.”
Monsieur Linh takes the packet. He is trembling. He is not used to presents.
“Well, open it!” says Monsieur Bark, motioning with his hands as he speaks.
The old man gently removes the wrapping paper. This takes time because he unwraps it meticulously and his fingers are not very agile. Once the paper has been taken off, he has a lovely box in his hands.
«Allez-y, allez-y!»
“Go on, go on!” The fat man laughs as he watches him.
Monsieur Linh opens the lid of the box. Inside, there is a thin sheet of very soft silky paper. He removes it. His heart is pounding. He lets out a little gasp. A princess’ dress has just appeared, delicate, sumptuous and folded with great care. A dazzling dress. A dress for Sang diû!
“She’s going to look beautiful!” says Monsieur Bark, as he glances across at the little girl. Monsieur Linh hardly dares touch the dress with his fingers. He is too frightened of damaging it. He has never seen such a beautiful piece of clothing. And the fat man has just given this dress to his child. Monsieur Linh’s lips are affected by a nervous spasm, which he cannot control. He puts the dress back in the box, covers it with the tissue paper, and replaces the lid. He takes Monsieur Bark’s hands in his and he clasps them firmly. Very firmly. For a long while. He takes Sang diû in his arms. Monsieur Linh’s eyes gleam, he looks at his friend, he looks at the little girl, and his frail voice, slightly worn and quavering, then rises up in the restaurant:
Always there is the morning
Always the light returns
Always there is another day
One day it is you who will be a mother.
The song is over. Monsieur Linh bows towards Monsieur Bark, as if to thank him.
“Thank you, Monsieur Tao-laï,” says the fat man.
In the late afternoon Monsieur Bark takes Monsieur Linh back. It is a pleasant day. It is not cold. Winter is over. When they reach the building in which the dormitory is situated, the two men take their leave of one another, as they do every evening: Monsieur Bark says goodbye to Monsieur “Good-day”.
Monsieur Linh says “good-day” to Monsieur Bark.
And, feeling happy, the old man goes upstairs to the dormitory, clasping his little girl to him.

aller chercher un enfant à l'école(학교에 애를 데리러 가다)
The following day, the woman from the quayside arrives in the dormitory with the interpreter girl just as Monsieur Linh was getting ready to go out and join his friend. They have come to collect him. He must go with them. He has to see a doctor. They had forewarned him. It’s the normal procedure. He would then have to accompany them to the Refugee Bureau to fill in certain documents.
Monsieur Linh is annoyed, but he doesn’t dare let them know this. What will Monsieur Bark think? But the women are already dragging him away with them.
“May I bring my little girl?” he asks the interpreter girl. She translates for the woman from the quayside. She in turn looks at the child, demurs, and says something in reply. “No problem, Uncle!” the girl translates.
