"그대/당신"를 왜 "thou"라고 하지?

영어에 2인칭 단수의 낱말로 "you"와 "tuou"가 있다.

이 가운데 "thou"는 어디에서 유래되었을까?

(1) Thou originates from Old English þú, and ultimately via Grimm's law from the Proto-Indo-European tu, with the expected Germanic vowel lengthening in open syllables. Thou is therefore cognate with Icelandic and Old Norse þú, German, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish du, Latin, Spanish, French, Portuguese,  Catalan, Italian, Irish, Kurdish, Lithuanian, Latvian and Romanian tu or tú, Greek σύ, (sy), Slavic ты / ty or ти / ti, Armenian դու (dow), Hindi तू (tū), Bengali: তুই (tui), Persian تُو‎ (to), and Sanskrit त्वम् (tvam). 구차한 설명들이 많다.

그 발음도 윗니와 아랫니 사이로 혓바닥을 쏙 내밀고서 [다우]라고 말하지만, 그것은 본디 [두][뚜]였던 것이다.

이 말은 인도-유럽어에 속한다고 했는데, 이런저런 나라들의 말이 tu tú þú du σύ, (sy), तू (tū), তুই (tui), و‎ (to), त्वम् (tvam) 등이다.

아무리 봐도 페르시아어에서, 산스크리트에서 나온 말임을 알 수 있다. 힌디 말이라고 해도, 그것은 [토][또]이다. 페르시아어와 다르지 않다. 페르시아어에 [또][토]라고 해도, 그 소리는 [뚜][투]라고해도 못알아 들을 사람은 없을 것이다.

왜 영어라는 말에 이런 어원을 가진 말이 있을까.
