Coherence and Cohesion

Coherence and cohesion plays a major role in discourse ability. What is coherence and cohesion?

우선적으로 일관성(Coherence) 과 응집성(Cohersion) 의 개념을 설명하겠습니다.

"If a text is coherent, it is pleasing, comprehensible, and understandable to read. It comforms to the real language world."

"Coherence means the connection of ideas at the idea level,  and cohesion means the connection of ideas at the sentence level."

Coherence 는 전반적인 내용적 측면에서 논리성과 연개성을 따지게 됩니다. 내용의 흐름에 이상이 없고, 같은 주제에 대해 이야기 하고 있다면 그 text 나 dialogue 는 coherent 하다고 할 수 있습니다. 반면에, Cohesion은 좀 더 협소하게 문장간의 연결성에 대해 말하는 것입니다. Cohesion 을 나타내는 장치(device) 에는 크게  reference, ellipsis, substitution, lexical cohesion, conjunction으로 다섯가지가 있습니다.

 1. reference- 지시 대명사, he, she, they...

 2. ellipsis- 생략, a series of dots that indicates an intentional omission of  a word, sentence, or whole section from a text without altering its original meaning, ... 으로 표시 된다.

 3. substitution- 대용어, this, that, those...

 4. lexical cohesion-어휘응집, 하나의 텍스트 속에 나타나는 거의 모든 주요 단어들은 서로 응집된다.

 5. conjunction- 접속사, and, but, also...

아래와 같은 예시(Discourse)로 좀  더 명확히 설명해보겠습니다.

1. Both coherent and cohesive

My favorite color is blue.  I like it because it is calming and it relaxes me.  I often go outside in the summer and lie on the grass and look into the clear sky when I am stressed.  For this reason, I'd have to say my favourite colour is blue."

->좋아하는 색이 파란색이라는 주제(아이디어)에 관련된 내용으로 구성되어 있으며, 단어적, 문법적 측면에서도 각각의 문장이 연결고리를 가지고 있습니다.  

2. Coherent but not cohesive

My fovorite colour is blue. I'm calm and relaxed. In the summer I lie on the grass and look up.

-> 자세히 보면 각각의 문장이 간단한 대답, 부가적 설명, 예시문 이라는 것을 겨우 알 수 있을지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 이 세 문장들의 연결성은 전혀 알 수가 없습니다. 
 

3. Cohesive but not coherent

My favourite colour is blue.  Blue sports cars go very fast.  Driving in this way is dangerous and can cause many car crashes.  I had a car accident once and broke my leg.  I was very sad because I had to miss a holiday in Europe because of the injury.

-> 문장들 사이에 같거나 유사한 단어, 대용어를 사용함으로써 각각 문장끼리의 연결성은 보여진다고 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 전반적 내용(나는 파란색을 좋아한다)의 일관성은 찾을 수 없습니다.
