In Iran, doctors have examined a 97-year-old woman who was trapped for more than a week after an earthquake destroyed her home. They say she is fine and that her slow metabolism helped her survive. More than 30,000 people in Bam were not as fortunate. Their bodies have been recovered, while thousands of survivors remain homeless. The U.N. says relief efforts have been complicated by thieves who were stealing supplies. ABC's Martin Seemungal reports on the ancient city's most symbolic loss.
It was an ancient jewel, the largest mud-brick citadel fortress in the world. It was the heart of Bam. But when the earthquake struck, centuries of history all but vanished. The beautiful domes, the round guard towers, the once elaborate governors' residence, all reduced to rubble and dust.
There have been earthquakes here before, but never like this. This used to be the gateway to the citadel. Thousands of people used to file through here every year.
Tourists from all over the world visited Bam. Now, it's impossible to pass through the gates and what's left on the other side is barely recognizable.
"And now you see only a very destroyed city here. It was really, really beautiful."
This man, a tour guide, cannot comprehend what has happened.
"Really I cried yesterday at home because yesterday, it was the first time that I saw this citadel after destroying."
The Iranian government is talking about rebuilding this ancient citadel, this heart of Bam. But there are those who believe it should be left like this. A monument to the enormous tragedy, out of respect for the thousands and thousands of souls who perished.
