Walking with the Spirit and Watching with Jesus
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:16
Jesus said to His disciples in Gethsemane:
“Could you not watch with Me one hour?”
Matthew 26:40
In Galatians, Paul teaches us how to overcome the desires of the flesh. The answer is not simply trying harder or strengthening our own willpower. The answer is to walk by the Spirit. Our flesh constantly pulls us toward ourselves—our desires, our fears, our opinions, and our comfort. But the Holy Spirit continually leads us toward Jesus Christ.
In his meditation, Oswald Chambers gives us a challenging insight about watching with Jesus. To watch with Him means to lay aside our own private point of view and to be completely attentive to Him.
Often, we want Jesus to watch with us.
We want Him to stand beside us when we are hurting, comfort us when life becomes difficult, and walk with us in the direction we have already chosen.
But in Gethsemane, Jesus asks something different.
“Watch with Me.”
Sometimes the Lord invites us into circumstances that we do not understand. We may each encounter our own personal “Gethsemane”—a place of pain, confusion, disappointment, or surrender.
In those moments, we may ask:
“Lord, why is this happening to me?”
“Why do I have to walk through this difficult path?”
“Why can things not happen the way I want?”
Yet Jesus does not always explain everything before He calls us to follow Him. Instead, He simply asks:
“Watch with Me.”
To walk by the Spirit means that we learn to lay aside our own position in such moments. We release our insistence on being right, our demand to understand everything, and our desire to control the outcome. Instead, we look for where Jesus is and choose to remain with Him.
The disciples fell asleep in Gethsemane because of human weakness. But after the coming of the Holy Spirit, they were transformed. They no longer lived by their own strength alone. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, they learned to remain awake with Jesus throughout their lives.
The same struggle continues in our lives today.
The flesh wants comfort.
The flesh wants to avoid difficult paths.
The flesh wants to insist on its own opinion.
But the Holy Spirit whispers:
“Lay down your own position and watch with Me.”
A person who walks by the Spirit does not look only at the problem. He looks for the Lord who is present within the problem. He does not simply ask for his own will to be fulfilled. Instead, he seeks to become one with Christ and to discover the will of God.
Are you walking through a Gethsemane today?
Is there a situation you do not understand? Is there a difficult place you would rather avoid?
Do not first demand every answer. Remain near Jesus.
Lay down your own position. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. And pray:
“Lord, I do not understand everything, but I will not leave You. I will remain with You. More than my own thoughts and desires, I want Your will. By the Holy Spirit, help me to watch with You.”
The deepest way to overcome the desires of the flesh is not to hold more tightly to ourselves. It is to remain awake with Jesus and walk with Him through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Today, may we lay down our own will, seek the leading of the Spirit, and remain awake with the Lord.
Meditation for Today
To walk by the Spirit is to lay aside our own desires and viewpoints, remain awake with Jesus in every circumstance, and seek the will of God above our own.
