Chinese coach: Players are gangsters
BEIJING, May 19 (Reuters) - China's football Super League has become mired in scandal again, this time over the sacking of the coach of defending champions Shenzhen Jianlibao, now languishing at the bottom of the table.
Yang Saixin, who has quit his job as interim board chairman in protest against the sacking, said the club had succumbed to 'ruffian' players in sacking the coach on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
'They are multi-millionaires. They have their own companies... They are more gangsters than players,' Yang was quoted as telling a news conference on Wednesday.
Coach Chi Shangbin took up his job at the beginning of the season, but relations between the former national team assistant coach and the players soon soured over his tough management style.
Chinese media showed images of Shenzhen players smiling and watching fans set off firecrackers at the training court when the dismissal of Chi was announced.
'Some of the key players are always late for morning training and they always gambled and drank until early morning,' Chi told reporters on Wednesday.
The Chinese Football Association has acknowledged that corruption is widespread, with gambling often cited as the root cause.
The Super League, set up in 2004 to boost the image of the former Division A games, narrowly headed off a boycott threat in its first season by top clubs after allegations that referees had accepted bribes.
The league has since lost its main sponsor, German conglomerate Siemens, and many fans.
China's soccer troubles extended beyond the Super League to the national team last year. They lost the Asian Cup final to Japan 3-1 in August, prompting fans in Beijing to hurl bottles, burn Japanese flags and fight police.
In November, China also failed to make the final round of Asian qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup, leading to the termination of Dutch coach Arie Haan's contract.
