10년 이상을  기자로서 NBA를 담당해 오는 동안 나는 많은 경우 에어 조던, 헐렁한 청바지와 럭비 셔츠 차림으로 나왔다. 업무 시간에 흐트러진 스웨터, 무릎길이의 반바지와 티셔츠의 내 모습은 정말 단정치 못했다.

내가 매일 저렇게 입고 다니는 건 아니었다. 뉴욕 타임즈에서의 6년 간은, 경기에 정장과 타이를 하고 나갔다. 신문사의 압력은 아니었고 이건 내 자신만의 선택이었다. 하지만 시간이 흐름에 따라, 네 벌의 정장과 두 켤레의 정장 구두를 기나긴 원정 여행 길에 챙겨야한다는 것에 지쳐갔고, 옷차림을 가볍게 하기 시작했다.

지금 ESPN에서는, 여러분들이 내가 여러가지 차림새를 하는 걸 볼 수 있을 것이다. 한 경기에서는 내가 정장에 타이를 맬 수 있고, 그 다음 경기엔 청바지와 스티커즈 차림이고, 또 그 다음엔 운동복에 목걸이를 한 모습을 하고 있을 테다. 대부분의 시간에 나는 제대로 입고 있겠지만(자켓과 타이), 내 기분에 따라 어떤 형태로든 옵션을 가지고 싶다.

내가 이런 이야기들을 하고 있는 이유는 데이비드 스턴이 제안한 새로운 드레스 코드에 대한 기사를 읽었기 때문이다. 이때 두려운 생각이 마음속에 떠올랐다: 그가 저널리스트들에겐 이걸 적용하지 않기만을.

그가 그렇게 하리라는 걸 상상할 순 없지만, 심판들과 코치들이 NBA 경기장에 들어설 때 입어야하는 방식에 코멘트를 다는 걸 읽었을 때는 슬몃 생각이 들기도 했다.

스턴의 새로운 제안에 대해 내가 느끼는 바를 나도 잘 모르겠다. 한 편으로는, 부상당한 선수들이 구시대의 져지 등을 입고있는 것보다는 정장차림을 하고 있는게 좋을 같기도 해 동의한다. -- 그리고 아이들에겐 좋은 본보기가 된다. 하지만 막상 내 입장에서 보면 난 그날 경기에 나갈 때는 구식 져지를 입고 싶거든이라고 말할 것같기도 해 위선적으로 되긴 싫기도 하다.

경기에 나와야 하는 건강한 선수들이 정장을 입고 있는 시간이 짧다고 하여 정장을 입고 나와야 한다고 생각하지 않는다. 이렇게 되면 경기에 차를 몰고 갈 때도 집으로 차를 몰고 갈 때도 정장을 입고 있어야 한다. 그들이 원정 팀이라면, 호텔에서 경기장으로가는 버스에서도 정장을 입어야 하고 한밤중에 도시를 떠나는 비행기에서도 그래야 한다. 그들을 비행기, 또는 차에서만큼은 편하게 있도록 해야하지 않겠는가?

리그의 가장 깔끔한 드레서들 중 하나인 앨런 휴스턴과 이에 대해 이야기를 나눠본 적이 있다. 경기 후에 타이를 매는 것에 그는 웃음을 터뜨렸는데, 누가 그때 정장입고 있는 그의 모습을 보겠냐는 것이다.(경기 후 인터뷰에 관련한 토막 뉴스가 티비에 나올 때를 제외하면)

경기 후에 선수들이 먹으러 가거나 돌아다닐려 그러면 많은 경우 정장과 타이로 지나치게 옷차림새를 맞춰야 할 것이다.

스턴이 앨런 아이버슨의 도전을 받아야 할 것으로 보인다. 아이버슨이 데릭 콜맨의 "Whoop-de-damn-do"책 페이지를 들춰보일 것이 눈에 선하다. 내 생각으로는 아이버슨이 자신이 하고싶은 옷차림새를 하면서 그냥 벌금이나 낼 것으로 보인다.

결국 두 진영 간의 줄다리기는 빅 스토리가 될 것이며, 나는 어떤 식으로든 스턴이 대중의 의견에 대해 승리할 것으로 보지 않는다. 물론, 아이버슨이 정장을 갖춰야 할 것이라고 믿는 성인들도 많다. 하지만 그는 힙합 세대에겐 너무나 큰 영웅으로서 존재하기 때문에 여론은 그의 기호에 크게 기울 것이라 생각한다. 자신의 기분에 따른 옷차림의 자유에 대해 크나큰 논쟁이 일어날 수도 있다.

루키 오브 더 이어 시상식 때 AI가 머리통만한 모자를 쓰고 나왔을 때 리그가 충격에 싸였던 걸 기억해 보라. 지금은 그 세대 친구들 대부분이 저렇게 차림새를 한다. 스턴이 저러한 대세에서 멀어지고 싶어할 거라 생각하진 않는다.

이 이야기는 정말 재미있어질 것 같다.

규정은 아마도 이렇게 돼야 할 것이다: 경기동안 사이드라인에 앉아야 하는 부상 선수는 정장, 또는 적어도 스포츠 코트를 입어야 한다. 다른 요구사항에 대해선, 스턴이 냉정해질 필요가 있다. 결국, 이 친구들은 농구 선수들이지, 법조인이나 경제학자들이 아니다.

그리고 나는 농구 경기들을 담당할 뿐이지, 법정을 다루지 않는다. 그렇기에 내가 무엇을 입든 신경쓰지 말라.

Spurs newbies battle for position

1. Point of contention: NBA 파이널 한 경기의 4쿼터에서 닉 밴 엑셀이 파커를 앉혀두고 플레이하고 있는 모습을 상상하는 건 어렵지 않다. 특히 당신이 2003년 타이틀 시리즈의 중요한 순간들에서 스피디 클랙스턴이 파커 대신에 플레이하고 있던 모습을 기억한다면. 이제 시즌이 얼마 남지 않은 시점에서 이러한 위협이 파커에게 얼마나 임팩트가 있을 것인지는 예상하기 어려운 부분이다.

스퍼스는 미래의 볼배급자로 여전히 베노 유드리히를 선호하지만, 지난 파이널에서 디트로이트가 풀-코트 프레셔로 유드리히를 연거푸 자빠뜨린 뒤론 자신들의 백코트 로테이션의 로버트 오리가 되라는 의미로 밴 엑셀에 타겟을 맞췄다. 파커가 "Pop이 압박 속에서도 플레이할 수 있으며 10분에서 15분 정도의 시간을 탄탄하게 지켜줄 수 있는 선수를 얻길 원하는 걸 안다"라고 말했지만서도, 그렉 포포비치 감독이 실제로 원하는 건 그 이상이다. 밴 엑셀은 마누 지노빌리처럼, 위협스런 왼손잡이 기술을 갖고 있으며 빅 샷을 두려워하지 않고 요구된 공격을 효과적으로 수행할 수 있다.

물론, 스퍼스가 선호하는 시나리오는 벤 엑셀의 존재가 파커로 하여금 안정성 레벨을 올리는 것이다.

파이널에서 두번 그리고  미워하던 레이커스를 상대로해 2-0까지 갔다가 물러난 그 유명한 2라운드에서 한번, 파커는 심히 부진했었다. 그러나 아직 그는 겨우 23세이며 확실히 성장의 공간이 남아 있다.

다음 봄에 있을 빅 게임의 크런치 타임에서 파커가 건강한 밴 엑셀을 제치고 플레이하고 있다면, 이것은 이 프랑스 친구가 진정 한단계 올라섰다는 걸 반증하는 것이 될테다.

2. The other battle: 2003-04 시즌 후반에 마이클 핀리와 브루스 보웬은 쌈박질하기 일보 직전에 있었다. 그 싸움은 결국 팔꿈치를 밀치는 것까지밖에 안갔지만, 이후에 핀리는 그 스퍼스의 스타퍼를 일컬어 겁쟁이(coward)라 불렀고, 시애틀의 레이 앨런과 함께 안티-보웬 리그에 가입했다.

현재 핀리와 보웬은 같은 팀에서 시간을 두고 경쟁하고 있지만, 양 측은 자신들이 그 증오심을 금새 묻어버렸다고 주장하고 있다. 실제로, 이 장기 매버릭(핀리)이 피닉스와 마이애미를 놔두고 샌안토니오를 택한 후 그를 점심 식사에 초대한 첫 스퍼가 보웬이었으며, 핀리는 그들이 "성심성의껏 대접을 했다(put it all on the table)"고 말했다.

그러하나 매니지먼트는 사실주의에 따른다. 만약 엥겔런드가 형편없는 슛팅 메카닉으로 큰 무대에서 부진에 일조했던 파커에게 크나큰 영향을 미친다면 스퍼스는 환호할 것이다. 하지만 그들은 팀 던컨이 자신의 자유투 문제를 혼자 풀어나가길 좋아한다는 걸 알기때문에, 그에게 지도를 강요하진 않을 것이다.

4. 캠프의 분위기는 어떠한가? Loose.

심각하긴 하지만, 답답할 정도는 아니다.

포포비치는 확실히 그냥 하던데로 하는게 6월말까지 가는 길이다라고 믿는 사람처럼 코치하고 있다. 즉 그들이 버진 아일랜드에서 보낸 날 중 제대로 된 세션을 연 것은 거의 하루 한번으로 제한했으며, 이때 정규 NBA 프랙티스를 하루 2회 실시했다.

2,500석이 가능한 장소에 5만명 정도의 지역 팬들의 흥미를 끌은 금요일 밤의 오픈 연습경기 다음날인 토요일 Pop은 또한 하루 휴가 계획을 잡았다. 이로써 자신의 선수들에게 팀의 저녁 만찬 전까지 색다른 곳의 정취를 만끽하도록 했다.

밴 엑셀이 자신의 첫번째 스퍼스 캠프에 대해 말하길, "정말 좋던데요. 정말 널럴했는데 이게 좋았어요."

매버릭스 감독 에이버리 존슨은 넬슨에게 맵스의 캠프에 나오지 말라고 요청했다. 대신 넬슨에게 샌안토니오와 덴버의 캠프를 볼 수 있도록 마크 큐반의 허락을 받으라고 말을 건냈다. 여러분들은 밴 엑셀과 핀리가 스퍼스의 비행기에서 넬슨을 봤을 때 double-takes를 취하는 걸 상상할 수 있을 것이다.(double-take: 코미디의 기법으로 처음엔 웃음으로 받아넘겼다가 화들짝 놀라는 시늉을 하는 것)

"버진 아일랜드로 올 때, 내가 부드러워지듯이 넬리도 부드럽게 할려고 했어요."라고 포포비치는 농담을 건냈다.

5. 그렇다면 그 곳은 어떤 장소인가? 일주일 내내 지속적인 비가 내려 스퍼스나 다른 NBA 쪽의 방문자들로 하여금 최고의 선수들 중 하나를 배출한 섬을 깊게 탐색할 기회를 그렇게 주진 않았다.

이 구릉성 지대의 지형에, 황폐한 1차로의 도로에, 폭풍우 날씨에, 그리고 스퍼스가 모여있는 유니버시티 오브 버진 아일랜드 캠퍼스에 있는 것 말고는 (매우) 빈약한 스포츠 시설 등등을 당신이 충분히 본다면 --  던컨의 St. Croix에서 3회 NBA 파이널 MVP까지의 여정이 당신이 생각했던 그 이상으로 놀랍다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.

이것이 야오밍이 떠났던 공산주의 중국에서 NBA 드래프트 오버롤 1순위 픽까지의 경로보다는 길지 않아보일 수도 있다 -- 하지만 우리를 믿으라. 이것보다 한수 위다.

Cavs wonder, who's the point?

CLEVELAND -- Five observations from Cavaliers camp:

1. D up: 새 감독 마이크 브라운은 캠프에서 대부분의 시간을 수비에 집중하는데 썼다. 놀라울 건 없다. 결국, 그가 이전에 머물렀던 곳이 샌안토니오와 인디애나였으며 이곳은 리그에서 탑 디펜시브 팀들 중 두 팀이란 말이다.

그런데 한편으로는, 클리블랜드는 지난 시즌 수비에 있어서는 웃음거리였다. 픽-앤-롤을 상대하는데 어리버리했고 상대방들은 캐벌리어스를 상대로 45 퍼센트의 아투 적중율을 즐겼다.

이런 일은 이번 시즌에 끝날 것이다. 실제로, 이미 이루어졌다. 목요일 유니버시티 오브 애크런에서 펼쳐진 Wine and Gold 연습경기에서, 수비 집중도는 바로 알아챌 수 있었다. 르브론 제임스와 래리 휴즈가 엎치락 뒤치락 하면서, 거의 모든 샷이 저항을 당했고 캡스는 복수의 칼을 갈고 픽-앤-롤을 상대해냈다.

휴즈와 제임스는 또다른 무형의 것을 가져다 줄 것이다 -- 패싱 레인에서의 선견지명. 지난 시즌 스틸 부문에서 그들은 각자 리그 1위와 3위였다. 브라운은 자신들이 지난 시즌에 그랬던 것처럼 갖가지 시스템들에 도박을 걸지 않을 것이지만, 스틸을 만들어내 속공을 얻어낼 기회들은 여전히 많다고 말했다.

"난 그 누구도 구속하지 않습니다. 한 선수가 패싱 레인을 읽고 스틸을 얻어낼 수 있다면, 그걸 하는 겁니다. 하지만 튀어나는 행동을 해서 첫 실수를 하고, 그 다음에서 그래서 두번째 실수를 하고, 그다음에도 그래 세번째 실수를 한다면, 팀을 위해서 자중해야 할 겁니다."라고 브라운은 말했다.

2. Share the rock: 포인트 가드처럼 볼을 다룰줄 아는 제임스와 휴즈라는 두 명의 윙을 갖고 브라운은 1, 2, 3번들에게 공격 시에 서로 교차할 계획을 갖고 있다.

예를 들어, 휴즈가 리바운드를 잡았으면, 스노우에게 아울렛 패스를 하기 위해 내다보지 않아도 된다. 대신에, 그는 속공을 위해 볼을 갖고 내달리도록 허락 받을 것이다. 제임스에게도 마찬가지다. 또한, 구든이나 그 누구도 저 세명의 선수들 중 아무에게나 공을 아울렛해줄 수 있다.

이는 클리블랜드가 속공 농구를 하는데 있어 커다란 보탬이 될 것이다. 뉴져지 넷츠가 그렇게 많이 달릴 수 있는 이유 중 하나가 제이슨 키드가 자신이 볼을 잡아 그대로 달릴 수 있는 너무나 뛰어난 리바운더이기 때문이다. 자, 제임스(7.4)와 휴즈(6.3)이라는 최고의 외곽 리바운더들 중의 둘이 있단 말이다.

하프코트에서는, 휴즈와 제임스 둘 다 드리블치다가 플레이를 만들어 낼 수 있는 훌륭한 패서들이다. 그들이 윙에서부터 돌파를 하다가 팀 메이트들에게 오픈 찬스를 내주는 장면을 많이 보게될 것을 기대해 보라.

3. Point man: 만약 에릭 스노우와 데이먼 존스가 한 선수로 합쳐진다면, 그는 클리블랜드에게 있어 완벽한 포인트가 될 것이다. 그렇지 않기 때문에, 질문은 "누가 스타터냐?"가 되고 만다.

스노우는 수비에 능하며 공격을 완벽하게 운영하는 리더이다. 슛은 잘 못하지만 플로어에 휴즈, 제임스, 구든과 일가우스카스가 있다면 그렇게 득점원이 될 필요는 없다.

존스는 덜덜덜한 3점 슛터이며 제임스와 휴즈에게 더블팀이 붙거나 포스트에서 일가우스카스에 달라붙는 수비에 값을 치루게 만들 것이다. 그는 트루 포인트 가드는 아니지만, 제임스와 휴즈가 뛰어난 볼 핸들러들이기 때문에, 스팟-업 슛터는 매우 적합하다.

스노우는 스타터로서 캠프에 들어갔으며 그가 벤치에서 나올 경우 존스만큼이나 스파크를 튀겨주지 못할 것이라는 단순한 이유로 주전 자리를 받을 것이다. 어떠한 경우든, 두명 다 빛날 기회는 매우 많을 것이다.

"첫 5분으로 승리하는 경기는 본적이 없잖아요. 그렇기에 누가 주전이냐는 진짜 문제가 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 내가 앞으로 경기가 어떻게 흘러가는지 볼 수 있을 것이고 그때그때 우리가 필요한 것에 따라 포인트 가드가 해줄 것을 이용하는 것입니다."

4. Shoot'em up: 만일 GM 대니 페리가 그외 다른 뛰어난 외곽 슛터를 영입하지 않았다면, 마이클 레드 대신에 래리 휴즈와 사인한 것은 달갑지 않은 것이 될 뻔 했다. 하지만 이미 루크 잭슨을 보유하고 있다는 것은 말할 것도 없고 존스와 다니엘 마샬을 영입함으로써 캡스의 3점 부문에서 충분한 화력을 제공할 것이다.

일가우스카스가 로우포스트에서 더블 팀을 끌어들이고, 또한 제임스와 휴즈가 돌파하여 킥 아웃을 해주면 캡스의 슛터들은 엄청난 오픈 기회를 얻게 될 것이다.

"내 생각엔 드라이브-앤-킥이 공격에서 할 수 있는 최고의 것들 중 하나라고 봅니다."라고 브라운은 말했다.

여기에 더하여, 마샬이 구든과는 완전히 다른 타입의 4번이라는 것이 장점이다. 구든이 인사이드와 보드 근처를 공략한다면, 마샬은 더느린 4번들을 끌어내 그들을 이용해 먹을 것이다. -- 마치 지난 시즌 그가 필라델피아와 웨버를 상대로 12개의 3점슛을 갖고 NBA 기록과 타이를 이뤘던 때처럼.

"Z와 그러한 선수들(제임스와 휴즈)과 플레이를 하게 되니, 연습 때 불붙게 됐습니다."라고 먀샬은 말했다.

5. Board work: 클리블랜드는 지난 시즌 훌륭한 리바운딩 팀이었으며, 이번 시즌에도 그들은 굉장할 것이다. 일가우스카스(8.6 rpg)는 지난 시즌 공격 리바운드에서 리그 1위였으며, 구든(9.2)은 이번 시즌에 평균 두자리 기록을 할 것이다. 제임스(7.4)와 휴즈(6.3)를 지나치는 것도 말이 안된다.

그리고 마샬(커리어 7.7 rpg)이 퍼리머터 플레이어치곤 돋보이는 리바운더라는 점을 잊지 말라.

브라운의 수비에 대한 포커스가 값을 발휘하여 캡스가 상대방의 필드골 퍼센테이지를 낮춘다면, 이것은 클리블랜드가 많은 세컨드 샷을 허용하지 않을 것이기 때문에 두가지의 효과가 나타나게 된다. 또한, 캡스는 달리고 싶어할 것이고 리바운딩은 러닝 게임에 필수적이다.

이상으로, 캡스는 매우 높은 희망을 갖고 있으며 여기엔 적절한 이유가 있다. 그들은 새로운 구단주 댄 길버트로부터 나온 지령이 플레이오프에 진출하는 것이라는 걸 안다. 하지만 그들은 그 보다 높은 곳에 눈을 두고 있다.

Stern vs. Iverson: Dressing up, dressing down
I've been covering NBA games as a reporter for more than 10 years, and during that time I've shown up many times in Air Jordans, baggy jeans and rugby shirts. I've really looked disheveled at practices, arriving in banged-up sweats, knee-length shorts and T-shirts.

I don't always roll like that. For most of my six years at the New York Times, I wore suits and ties to games. There was no pressure from the newspaper; that was my own choice. But gradually, I got tired of packing four suits and two pairs of dress shoes on long road trips, so I began dressing down a bit.

Now, at ESPN, you could catch me in anything. One game I might wear a suit and tie, the next I might be in jeans and sneakers, the next I might sport slacks and a collared shirt. Most of the time, I'm dressed up (jacket and tie), but I like to have the option of going any way I please.

I'm saying this because in reading about Commissioner David Stern's proposed new dress code, a scary thought came to mind: I hope he doesn't try to institute one for journalists.

I can't imagine that he would, but reading his comments about how referees and coaches dress a certain way when they enter NBA arenas made me wonder.

I don't know how I feel about Stern's new proposal. On the one hand, I do agree that it would be nice -- and a good example for kids -- to see injured players sitting on the sidelines in suits instead of throwback jerseys. But I don't want to be hypocritical because hey, I might be covering the game that night in a throwback jersey.

I don't think healthy players who are playing in games should have to dress up because the time they spend in their suits is miniscule. They would essentially be putting on a suit to drive to the game and then to drive home. If they are the road team, they would suit up for the bus ride from the hotel and for the midnight flight out of town. Why not let them be comfortable on the plane, or in the car?

I once talked with Allan Houston, one of the sharpest dressers in the league, about this. He laughed when putting on a tie after a game because it dawned on him that hardly anyone would see him in his suit (except maybe for the brief news bite of his postgame interview that might be shown on TV).

If the players go out to eat or hang out after a game, in many cases, they will be overdressed in a suit and tie.

It looks like Stern's going to get a fight from Allen Iverson. I can envision Iverson taking a page out of Derrick Coleman's "whoop-de-damn-do'' book. My guess is that Iverson will continue to dress the way he wants and simply pay the fines.

Eventually, the standoff between the two will become a big story, and I don't see any way Stern wins in the court of public opinion. Sure, there are many adults who will believe Iverson should dress up, but he is such a cult hero to the hip-hop generation that I think public sentiment will be strongly in his favor. It could start a huge debate about the freedom to dress as you please.

Remember, when AI wore a skull cap to his Rookie of the Year award presentation, the league freaked. Now an entire generation dresses like that. I don't think Stern wants to alienate that demographic.

This could really get interesting.

The rule should probably be this: Any injured player who sits on the sidelines during a game must wear a suit, or at least a sports coat. As far as the other requirements, Stern probably needs to chill. After all, these cats are basketball players, not lawyers and economists.

And I'm just covering ball games, not judicial hearings. So don't worry about what I wear either.

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands -- Five early observations from Spurs camp:

1. Point of contention: It's not difficult to imagine Nick Van Exel playing ahead of Tony Parker in the fourth quarter of an NBA Finals game, especially if you remember Speedy Claxton playing ahead of Parker in the big moments of 2003's title series. The hard part, not yet a week into the season, is getting a read on how that threat will impact Parker.

The Spurs still like Beno Udrih as a future contributor, but they targeted Van Exel to be the Robert Horry of their backcourt rotation after Detroit repeatedly rattled Udrih in the Finals with its full-court pressure. Even Parker says he "knew Pop wanted to get somebody who can play under pressure and give us a solid 10 to 15 minutes," but coach Gregg Popovich actually wanted more than that. In Van Exel, he has another dangerous lefty, who, like Manu Ginobili, fears no big shot and can run an offense efficiently when asked.

The Spurs' preferred scenario, of course, is that Van Exel's presence drives Parker to a new level of consistency.

Twice in the Finals and once in a famed second-round fade from 2-0 up against the hated Lakers, Parker has struggled mightily. Yet he's only 23 and certainly still has room for growth.

If he's playing ahead of a healthy Van Exel in crunch time of the big games next spring, that would represent a real step for the Frenchman.

"When you want to win a championship, you can't say no when Nick Van Exel wants to come play for your team," Parker said. "I think we're going to play the same way as always. I just think Michael [Finley] and Nick are going to bring us big baskets when we play tough games."

Said Ginobili: "I think Tony will not be threatened. He knows he's the owner of that position. They just brought Nick to help him out -- and me, too. I don't think its going to be a problem."

2. The other battle: Michael Finley and Bruce Bowen nearly brawled late in the 2003-04 season. The fight ultimately didn't go farther than forearm shoves, but Finley later called the Spurs' stopper a coward, putting himself up there with Seattle's Ray Allen in the Anti-Bowen League.

Now Finley and Bowen are competing for minutes on the same team, but both sides insist that they've quickly buried the animosity. Bowen, in fact, was the first Spur to invite Finley to lunch after the longtime Maverick chose San Antonio over Phoenix and Miami, and Finley said they "put it all on the table."

"It's something that unfortunately happened, but it was on the court," Bowen said. "It wasn't off the court. It had nothing to do with off the court or what I felt about his game.

"When he got here, I said, 'Hey, man, we're going to receive a lot of flak from what has transpired in the past,'" Bowen continued. "I think, in life, you've got to be able to make situations right or address it to where no one is feeling funny. We've done that."

Finley echoed the sentiment, describing the welcome he has received from his new teammates as warmer than he could have ever imagined.

"I really respect him for that," Finley said of Bowen's lunch invite. "All these guys have been so great to me, it just makes me even happier with my decision."

3. A new coach, too: You've heard it from Popovich many times. He has never liked the idea of hiring a free-throw guru to address the Spurs' notorious weak spot. Until now.

Maybe Popovich was merely waiting for the right guru. Chip Engelland, a shooting coach so highly regarded that Steve Kerr used to seek his counsel, has been hired away from the Denver Nuggets to help the Spurs at the line and on the perimeter.

Management is realistic, though. The Spurs will be thrilled if Engelland has a profound impact on Parker, whose poor shooting mechanics have contributed to those struggles on the big stage. Yet they know that Tim Duncan prefers to deal with his free-throw woes alone and thus won't force instruction on him.

4. What kind of camp is it? Loose.

Serious, but not stifling.

Popovich is certainly coaching like a man who expects the usual long grind all the way to late June, limiting the Spurs to one crisp session on all but one day of their Virgin Islands stay, at a time when two-a-days are standard NBA practice.

Following Friday night's open scrimmage -- which drew interest from some 50,000 local fans for fewer than 2,500 available seats -- Pop also scheduled an off-day for Saturday, thus providing a chance for his players to enjoy their exotic locale before a team dinner in the evening.

"It feels great," Van Exel said of his first Spurs camp. "It feels really light, and that's a good thing."

Van Exel has also referred to it as the smoothest camp he has ever seen, although not without a surprise. Ex-Mavericks coach Don Nelson, still a handsomely paid member of the Dallas front office at $5 million this season, was invited by Popovich to fly with the Spurs to St. Thomas as an observer.

Mavericks coach Avery Johnson asked Nelson not to attend the Mavs' camp, prompting Nelson to ask owner Mark Cuban for permission to see some of San Antonio's and Denver's. You can imagine the double-takes from Van Exel and Finley when they saw Nelson on the Spurs' plane.

"Coming to the Virgin Islands, letting Nellie come in here like that ... I'm getting soft," Popovich joked.

5. What kind of place is it? Persistent rain throughout the week denied the Spurs or anyone else visiting from the NBA much chance for in-depth exploring of the islands that produced one of the game's greatest players.

But you saw enough in the hilly terrain -- with its rundown one-lane roads, stormy weather and (very) meager sports facilities beyond those on the University of Virgin Islands campus where the Spurs convened -- to know that Duncan's journey from St. Croix to three-time NBA Finals MVP is more amazing than you ever thought.

It might not be as long and winding as the path Yao Ming traveled from communist China to No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft -- but trust us. it's up there.

CLEVELAND -- Five observations from Cavaliers camp:

1. D up: New coach Mike Brown has spent almost all of camp focusing on defense. No surprise there. After all, his last two stops as an assistant were with San Antonio and Indiana, two of the top defensive teams in the league.

Cleveland, on the other hand, was a defensive joke last season. They were clueless against the pick-and-roll and opponents enjoyed sinking 45 percent of their shots against the Cavs.

That will end this season. In fact, it already did. In their Wine and Gold scrimmage Thursday at the University of Akron, the defensive intensity was palpable. LeBron James got after Larry Hughes and vise versa, just about every shot was contested and the Cavs attacked the pick-and-roll with a vengeance.

"Defense is his main focus," point guard Eric Snow said. "He's been on winning teams. He knows that those teams' main focus was about getting stops."

Brown, who had sole control of Indiana's defense as Rick Carlisle's assistant last season, promotes the same philosophy as many of the league's other defensive gurus -- protect the paint first and then rush out to contest every outside shot.

With the Cavs focused on keeping clubs out of the lane, they will give up outside shots, but the players are expected to close out quickly on jump shooters and contest all 3s. On the pick-and-roll, they will attack the ball handler rather than being indecisive and sitting back.

The Cavs' defensive potential is high because they are one of the longest teams in the league. With Hughes (6-foot-5) at the two, James (6-8) at the three, Drew Gooden (6-10) at the four and 7-3 Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who has blocked more than two shots a game the last two seasons, at the five, opponents will have problems finding open spaces. Plus, Hughes, James and Gooden are extremely athletic for their positions.

"Defensively, I believe you can take your philosophies and transfer them from team to team," Brown said. "Defense is about effort. If you have some other intangibles to go along with that effort like length, athleticism, toughness, quickness and the whole 9 yards, and if you teach those guys the same concepts as another team that may be slower, you're going to have a better defensive team because of the intangibles."

Hughes and James bring another intangible -- anticipation in the passing lanes. They were first and third, respectively, in the league in steals last season. Brown said they will not gamble as much as they did in different systems last year, but they will still have plenty of opportunities to make steals and get out in transition.

"I don't ever put handcuffs on anybody," Brown said. "If a guy can get in the passing lanes and get a steal, he can do it. But if you jump out and miss the first time, then you jump out and miss a second time, then you do it a third time and miss, you have to consider pulling back a bit for the sake of the team."

2. Share the rock: With two wings, James and Hughes, who can handle the ball like point guards, Brown will make his one, two and three men interchangeable on the offensive end.

For instance, if Hughes grabs a rebound, he will not have to look to make an outlet pass to Snow. Instead, he will be allowed to push the ball up-court for a fast break. Same with James. Also, Gooden or whomever can outlet the ball to any of those three players.

That should greatly increase Cleveland's chances of running for transition baskets. One reason the New Jersey Nets are able to run so much is because Jason Kidd is such a great rebounder that he can just get the ball and go himself. Well, James (7.4) and Hughes (6.3) are two of the best perimeter rebounders in the game.

In the half court, both Hughes and James are great passers who can make plays off the dribble. Expect to see them penetrating a lot from the wing and creating open looks for their teammates.

3. Point man: If Eric Snow and Damon Jones were one player, he would be the perfect point guard for Cleveland. Since they're not, the question becomes, "Who starts?"

Snow is a leader who defends and runs the offense to perfection. He can't shoot but he doesn't need to be much of a scorer with Hughes, James, Gooden and Ilgauskas on the floor.

Jones is a tremendous 3-point shooter who will make defenses pay for double-teaming James and Hughes or for collapsing on Ilgauskas in the post. He's not a true point guard, but because James and Hughes are such great ball handlers, a spot-up shooter is a great fit.

Snow entered camp as the starter and might get the nod simply because he would not provide the type of spark off the bench that Jones would. Either way, both will get plenty of chances to shine.

"I've never seen a game won in the first five minutes, so it doesn't really matter who starts," Brown said. "The great thing is that I'll be able to see how the game is going and then utilize whichever point guard gives us what we need at that time."

4. Shoot 'em up: Signing Larry Hughes instead of Michael Redd might have been detrimental if GM Danny Ferry had not acquired great outside shooting elsewhere. But bringing in Jones and Donyell Marshall, not to mention already having Luke Jackson, gives the Cavs more than enough firepower from behind the arc.

With Ilgauskas able to draw double teams down low, and James and Hughes able to penetrate and kick the ball out, the Cavs' shooters will get plenty of open looks.

"The drive-and-kick, in my opinion, is one of the best things you can do offensively," Brown said.

Also, it's nice that Marshall is a completely different type of four from Gooden. While Gooden will do his damage inside and off the glass, Marshall will take slower fours outside and exploit them -- like when he tied the NBA record with 12 treys against Philadelphia and Chris Webber last season.

"Playing off of Z and those guys [James and Hughes], I've been lighting it up in practice," Marshall said.

5. Board work: Cleveland was a great rebounding team last season, and this year, they should be ferocious. Ilgauskas (8.6 rpg) led the league in offensive rebounds last season, and Gooden (9.2) should average double figures this year. Throw in James (7.4) and Hughes (6.3), and it gets ridiculous.

And don't forget that Marshall (7.7 rpg for his career) is an exceptional rebounder for a perimeter player.

If Brown's focus on defense pays off and the Cavs lower their opponents' field goal percentage, then it will be doubly effective because Cleveland should not give up many second shots. Also, the Cavs want to run and rebounding is critical to the running game.

Overall, the Cavs have very high hopes, and with good reason. They know the mandate from new owner Dan Gilbert is to make the playoffs, but they are setting their sights higher.

"A lot of people are talking about Miami and Detroit and Indiana, but I think we can go deep in the playoffs," Marshall said.
